  1. Buisnesses first? on Novell, RedHat and Sun Commit to a Linux Desktop · · Score: 1, Interesting

My Network Admin got a LONG call from a Novell rep... We are a K-12 school district, about 13 Novell servers and mostly Win2K on desktops...

The rep called to BS about how Novell wondered if we had thought about Linux on our desktops... (we use 2 as small web servers, mandrake, but nothing that fancy...)

The boss seemed to indicate that they wanted to push linux and open office... Not really a problem for me and the boss, but when I think of the everyday problems my users (Teachers/students) have with the microsoft products, I cringe when I think of turning them loose on Linux and Open Office...

It may be "OK" for me to play with, and for server use, but it doesn't seem to be right for the "average" (read as DUMB) users... And you can make things look SIMILAR to windows, but it's not windows... Our only final argument was that they had to convince Buisnesses to go to Linux and Open Office first... We are an educational environment, so we have to prepare them for what they use when they grow up... The kids that are into the networking and the future admins, find Linux in the networking class... the future secretaries find MSWord & Excell with Win2k...

Sad fact, but true... WE cannot expect to force our users to use something that they MAY not get to see in the real world, regardless of cost or how we may feel about a company.

Now, if you own or have power in a company, then THAT is where you start. Put linux in the front office on the computer of the 55 year old grandma secretary, and make it easy as pie to learn & use. Then you have a chance of changing the OS that is prefered when that same grandma goes home at night and wants get email pics of the grandkids...

    Simple enough, right? :)

  3. Why not 802.11a? Not 2.4Ghz! on When 54 Mbps isn't 54 Mbps: 802.11g's Real Speed · · Score: 0

b, g, ??? Why? I've been using 802.11a in my school wireless laptops.... Granted I don't need distance associated with b or g, because the laptops are in the same room as the AP. Speedwise, it is much better, and I don't have to worry about blenders, microwaves, cordless phones, and other stuff in the 2.4ghz range.

Distance is the only thing that b has to offer, but if your within your building / room you need it, then it is fine... Unless you want to have to PAY to access the wireless at some street corner, be even a Verizon link that I've seen pictures of was in a big Verizon "booth" type device that you would know when your around it... I'd pay for bandwidth, not coverage... that is the providors problem.

    but, just my $.02 worth....

  5. Cost of energy to recharge vs. buy cheap alks? on Rechargeable Batteries - Yes or No? · · Score: 0

Ok, I haven't seen it mentioned, but what about the cost of the energy used to charge the rechargables vs. the cheap alkalines at the dollar store? (TOTAL COST, ie LIVES!)

Energy made with Nuclear power, Coal, Water, etc... Not made out of nothing... While some is waste free, most (the first big 2) are NOT.

So that energy is made, then you consume it and contribute to the CO emmissions or the pile up of reactor waste...

All to charge your battery, but hey no prob! Just don't forget to take it out of the charger when your done! OOOps... you forgot? Yeah, me too... they sit for a week before I remember they are charged... No problem... just a little bit of juice, right? Trickle charge, but over time it still ads up!!!

And the same for the Eco-Freaks and electric cars... How is it better to burn NuKe fuel than Fossil Fuel?

So just keep buying the alkalines and throwing them out... Oh, wait... Mercury... Yep, forgot about that....

Hmmm... Well, only one solution to this crisis!

    (B-A-N-G)

A True environmentalist would just commit suicide to better the environment. Go ahead, it's ok to do it now.....
