How did they get them into the pdf's to download/view? Huh?!!!! Yes!!! Answer me that!
They can be scanned... You just have to know how...
I'd say the easiest way is to use an OLD COPY of photoshop *(I think I had 5 sitting around someplace at one time...)
Blahh... Anything that relies on current software to foil the attempts can be gotten around... Heck, if you actually coded your own photoshop like software but just left out the circle pattern thing, it would work... or how about using Gimp? Does it support the pattern recognition that would stop scanning the new bills? If not, does that mean that if you have Linux in your home that your a potential crook? Are only WINDOWS users that have photoshop innocent? Not hard folks... almost as easy as a black marker around the edge of a cd.....
Of course I don't recommend any of this, just pointing out what I think is an obvious Gaf.
Hey, now we know how to REALLY make the open software nich earn money... Just print it...
"Nobody's Safe" by Richard Steinberg - Bantam softback = $6.50
Basically a guy that is REALLY good at picking locks, and is a "off the radar" burglar acidently robs the wrong safe.... witnesses a murder and finds out the goverment DOES have secrets in Area 51 and he plans on picking his way in to figure out why the government is hiding the aliens...
Ok, I really thought it was a good book till the alien part got mixed in... But hey, it's fiction... Lots of interesting locks but I'm sure most of it is just bs.... but besides normal analog locks, he also has to face wired doors, a sismic sensor laden deser floor, IR detectors, etc...
Of course I'm sure that it's a coincidence that the evil senator that is running for Pres and has known about the aliens all of career, is named "Kerry" but it was published 1999, so go figure...:)
"Dammit, I paid for the software, and if you change it I'm gonna quit using it!"
Hmmm... Sounds like you just cut off your nose...
I bucked up and bought winamp "Pro" version... I too have MM Jukebox lifetime... I like the Winamp much better and haven't felt bad about the extra $$$ for a decent mp3 player... But as a previous poster stated, the MMJB Smart tagging is awsome....It's about the only thing I use my MMJB for...
Old version 6 of MMJB too, as somewhere along the line, it got SLOW AND CLUDGY when it starts up... sometimes bogging down the system a good bit... MMJB tech said they won't say what the changes were because it proprietary software... No problem, just didn't do any upgrades since.
ooops, look at that, the horse just died... Guess we can stop beating it now...
From about 1995 - 2000 my keychain consisted of an 8mb sim (dual sided) from our old ibm RT 1200.... It was cool because the actual memory chips were on both sides of the pcb for the sim... over the course of that 5 years all but 3 of the ram modules popped off.
I actually still have a pile of them stashed away somehere... I had even bought the key ring things from the craft store and thought of making them and selling them at lan parties and such... Eventually I realized they didn't look as cool as I once thought they did... (Old Age?)
bleh...
Blah... Read Greg Bear, "Blood Music" I can't find my copy now... The basis was something on the lines of a genetic scientist is working on an organic supercell (ie, organic nanotech) and to take it out of the lab after being fired (presumebly to the next lab he'd be hired at...) He injects himself with it and when he gets home he plans on removing the sample from his normal blood and store it in the fridge/freezer... Chaos ensues when the supercell basically makes itself a complete copy of his inteligence, and works to "improve" his body...
At first, no glasses anymore... then stronger... better sex, last longer, etc... not needing to eat much because of increased efficiency in food processing & energy use...
Eventually the little nanite cells realize the the ultimate modification of their host to optimize his life is to completely break him down to the individual supercell level (numerous copies of one's intelegence to each have their own expericences. All the same, but all different, on the multimillion of cells level... )
eventually his cells break down in a bathtub where he gets dumped into the water supply... Oh, his lover also "derodes?" into cells because she was "injected" with the cells during sex...
eventually, all of humanity breaks down into supercells trying to better the environment... Except for a select few that cannot be dismantled. (I guess like a immune thing...)
Eventually there is a point where there are millions times more concious individual super cells than there ever were of humans... and eventually they all get together and "THINK" themselves to a new plane of existance... the singularity if you will... Leaving only a select few humans on an abandoned earth to cary on.
Great book... I highly recommend it if you want a good read... Lots of creepy things before we ever thought about nanotech swarms ((c) by someone...) or even singularity... I think it was late 80's book. I had the paperback here someplace...
I think Greg Bear was well in advance of the idea of the Singularity... AND, if genetic engineering scares you, don't read this book while eating GM foods.:)
unfortunatly, this post will probibly never be read because the thread is too old now in slashdot years. (8 hours = 3 years = old news?) Hmmm... Ok, I claim that idea first, and it would be interesting to study that effect... except for the occasional recycled slashdot articles when the formula would be (8 hours = 3 years = old news - good news = new news.)
Why didn't they just remove the games when it first seemed like an issue... All my builds on Student stations HAVE THE DEFAULT GAMES REMOVED. Then if we have reports of individuals "wasting" time with some games in the office computers, I usually remove ALL the games in the office(s) affected at the end of the day... Next day, a few complaints, but games are gone...
Now, they can still download games (Not the public student systems) but then they are PROVING they want to waste time, and someone can take appropriate measure... Never had that, as usually just the fact that it disapears lets them know not to do it, so they surf instead. (another waste, but... )
As to how one should go about informing the higher ups about the bosses bad job is to write a letter on dead tree pulp (Forget email, most EPHB's don't read it unless it is a 3+jpg_female with little to no clothing...) After you document it in wrighting to the higher ups and get PERMISSION to spy on the person, then THAT is doing your job... To just decide to spy and then hand that data over is dirty politics and could (in this case did) backfire.
The KEY is to document what you are requesting on the dead tree pulp... See it has a funny way of being filed, and if you send it to 2/3 people in the chain asking for permission or "suggesting" the course of action that should be taken if they would like to approve it, etc.. Then more than one person knows, so if the next one up pitches it, and figures he'd screw you, you can say... "No, I also sent a copy to YOUR boss's boss, his secretary, and requested a copy filed in my employee record with human resources." Then you just hope one of them gives you the permission you need and your golden... but ATST, I've never had to spy on someone higher up... YET.
So, really he should of covered his ass better before he started down the spyware road...
Now lets be a little objective here. Newcomers don't know but those that have lurked around for quite a while (myself) and have appreciated the site for a number of years know. The REAL reason for this lawsuit was that divx bootlegs of nearly (all?) every episode, up until a couple years ago, were available here for download. THAT'S why he got raided. So don't let the one sided story that's on here fool you. If it were truly for linking to legitimate dvd sales, I would be standing in line to donate to the legal fund. As it stands, it's a legitimate lawsuit.
Oh... and of course... don't believe ME... Check it out for yourself. The internet wayback machine has the pages archived.
Just click on the links for the seasons and you can see that they were available for download via ASF and DIVX.
Now, the FBI probably was involved because of the overseas links to the DIVX contents when he was originally sent a "Cease & Desist." But, INAL...
Point is, there was copyright infringment, I'm sure the DCMA would have been the better act to follow, I don't know why they pulled the patriot act, other than it's another "TOOL" at their disposal....
BTW, the fact that this was from 2002, and it is just now being brought up, makes you wonder if it wasn't a planted story because of a certain election that is going to be playing out soon...
You know, FUD by the DNC? - Interesting thought, thats all I submit, no flames please, not trying to make any political points...
1) Too difficult to stay abreast of BOTH OS's in a district wide environment (9 ele's, 2 jr's, 1 high & 1 tech building + admin, bussing, and maintanience buildings... You try and keep different os's and programs on them all... Oh, and spread out about 35 miles from one end to the other...) And patching and updates...etc..
2) Price discounts in Bulk update purchases of computers & Parts from vendors. (ie, If I buy 500 computers to replace the old, they are discounted better then 250 macs & 250 PC's vs. 500 PC's)
3) Network inferstructure... We run Novell Netware 6, and to get a desent MAC Client, you have to purchase that SEPERATELY, as apposed to Windows that has the client from Novell
4) Training... Less training if EVERYONE uses the same software, no switching of different apps to confuse our lUSERS. Seriously, I had secretaries that got pissed off and demanded I convert their computers BACK to Windows 98 and Office 97 because they had never used Office XP and was NOT going to learn a new product! *(HELLO!!!-- The sad part is I actually lost this argument with the boss and had to conver the system back till she dies or retires,tick,tick,tick...)*
5) Sanity... If I have ONE SCRIPT that works based on ONCE client at login, I don't have to beat my head against the wall trying to figure out why a drive only maps on the windows side, and not MAC because I didn't have Namespace set to MAC also!, etc.. etc.. etc...
6) Software Availablity... Believe it or not, (and I don't like it either, so I fight back in the back end with the servers, etc..) MOST SPECIALIZED SOFTWARE IS WINDOWS ONLY... Case in point, our Tech department has a machine shop classroom and a computer lab with it... Lots of cool toys like robotics, CNC lathes, 3d Prototype modler, etc... ALL tied in nicely with the curriculum that the teacher was already teaching... Guess what, Yep... WINDOWS ONLY!
So you can see, it really is a big conspiracy to keep you tied to windows, but I did like the idea of the Knoppix CD... Cool idea, just don't bug me (or the counterpart IT dude at the school) to help you figure out how to log it into the novell network to get your network space, or how to print to a network printer with it, or drivers, etc.. We got enough junk to keep running, that we won't offer any help outright... But of course, we me point you to a machine that is running Windows, IE, and has the homepage set to Google and tell you that your answer is there in front of you...:)
Ahh... But, the problem I had at the time wouldn't even let me get to the update link... I pretty much redirected all web traffic to makesure that I wasnt trying to get rid of it... I forget what trojan it was, but after I went to another machine and downloaded the updated REF zip file, then I put it on the mapped network drive. Sorry if you misunderstood and thought I had a hard time finding it, Not the case at all... After pulling the new ref file from the network drive, AA6 Cleaned it up with no problems.
I've actually had some malware that gets into the system like a tick...
Not only is it set in the Hkey\..\run, but I had one that stuck it's html based install into the windows active desktop folder, so once the computer was "clean" it reinstalled itself on reboot...
I've even seen a few where if you try and use AdAware and the first thing you need to do after downloading it onto a new system is to update the REF. file... but adaware said no updates... Finally, I had to use another system to get the updates, put them on a ftp site, and pull the updated REF file from the ftp (or shared drive would work) because the malware blocked the adaware updates!
What I think is funny/sick is that if the author(s) of this crappy malware type software actually spent as much time/effert into a GOOD PRODUCT as they put into making it's removal difficult (my.search, etc...) then they would probably have a great product and people would enjoy using it, and maybe even give them legit business... Not trick people into installing it because it sucks so badly!
Of course the simple answere would be: boot Dos-format-reinstall (or reimage...)
Funny, thats how we got our living room table coffee table...
About 1 week before end of the school year , It was beat to hell and back, lots of different paints on it, from green to yellow... Big Ol' "FREE TO GOOD HOME" sign was taped on it, and it was sitting next to the dumpster outside of the apartment complex... Ugliest table I'd ever seen.
Me and My (now) wife took it home during the summer and made it a fun project to strip it, stain it, and varnish it...
Now, it has a beutiful oak glow, under about 10 layers of varnish, and is almost impervious to anything we've dropped on it... AND is looks GREAT! Total cost, about $10 for stain, $10 for varnish... +/- labor and some sandpaper and scrapers... And it is enjoying its new home in the middle of the living room in our NEW house... Never thought I'd have that table still around when I first saw it...
It's amazing what you can do with some of the junk you do find...
Now, Hardware wise.. I've got some old mac 5400's, a Mac monitor, old 15" monitor, and Lots of old Tandy COCO stuff... Maybe I'll pitch it all execept the COCO stuff... too many good memories.
I think the real problem is that we all worry about some threat (aids, greenhouse, astriods, etc..) killing off all life on earth... (dot, dot, dot.) AS WE KNOW IT. Who cares... If environmentalists really cared, they'd commit suicide the minute they realize that they impact the planets ecosystem negativly, just by existing... In reality, no matter what we do, we may kill a LOT of life, and even exterimate ourselves, but in the end, the earth (GIA therory?) will survive, with or without us... So why waste your time worring about things?
Come on, you know I'm right...
Just head down to the local pawn shop and get a little pistol
Yep, just put it to your head and end all your worries about your impact on the environment...
No more Gas to get back and forth to work
No more wasted water by drinking or bathing...
Thats it, just pull that trigger a bit more...
No more emmitions of Carbon Dioxide by breathing...
No more Methane emmitions from too many beans...
Stretch that tendon just a biiiit more.....
No more usage of questionable energy supplies...
. . . . . .
Ok, now that thats done, only the sane people should be left.. Now lets build that spacecraft to cover up our arms race... And maybe actually kick some AStroid while we're at it...:p
Exactly what I went through... Before our son was born, we went to BB and bought a Sony MiniDV camcorder and a Sony 5MP Digital camera... Ended up being a fair amount with the extra battery, memory stick, case, etc... The whole thing gets rang up and the last thing they ask is about the extended warrenty... I declined, but then I was told by the clerk he made a mistake and accidently already rang it up and I would have to wait for a manager, etc.... We were Pissed, went through the same conversation about the equipment must be junk if they don't think it will last, etc... etc....
Finally the manager gave up and voided and had the clerk rering the whole sale... Funny thing was that we got the BB Bonus club card thinggy at the initial ring up, for the extra cashback from the camera and camcorder being on it... But during the void, he didn't know how to void that because it was already activated at the initial checkout... So in the end he actually ended up ringing up the sale with the bonus card the second time...
I looked at my wife, who was just as pissed as I was... (and don't mess with pregent women...) and she just gave me a wink and nod that she had caught the mistake also and wasn't gonna tell them... After all, they wasted a lot of my time, and time is $$$$
All in all, we got like $100 in bounus certificates back from that one sale... And since all the camera's had rebates at the time, that helped even more... It was a very good deal that I couldn't pass up with all that... even after their BS about the warrenty.
I did like the look on the other costomers faces when we were saying:
"Well, not if it breaks after blah blah blah" "well, are you saying that these cameras are pieces of crap and break a lot?"
A few of the people even laughed and gave us a "you tell them" type of encoragement while we were waiting for the manager...
No, No autopr0n jokes... Seriously, I was pitching a monitor away a few weeks ago... It had developed a nasty habbit of randomly getting the shakes and going blury... No big deal, lots of 17" monitors around, just pitch it and get a new one...
I took it out to the dumpster, lifted it up about shoulder level, and heaved it as hard as I could...
Unfortunatly, half way through the release I realized the vga cable was somehow wrapped around my arm and was quickly tightning up...
All this took about.5 sec to realize I was in deep sh1t before I almost went into the dumpster.
The cable sinched around my wrist, and snapped it so hard that I was unable to even fill in the accident report, had to have a co-worker do the writing for me because it was my right hand.
Of course, he just laughed...
It still hurts now and again, I just make sure not to give it too much stress, and now have a brace for when it starts to flair up.
What, you expected a story about dropping a computer and/or monitor? That is usually on purpose to some extent with user frustration... This was truly, an accident.
Thats it... I'm not renewing my subscription to Wired anymore... I pay for pulp, but less than a week later, the stories are online... whats the point? Tired of it.... About the only thing I get for the pulp is more Ads that I cant avoid unlike web surfing with popup blocks enabled... I remember when Wired first came out, that was the Mag to read... ahhh.. the 90s... I miss them.
Uhmm... No, I didn't know it started as a movie... I just remember watching the series when I was a little kid... I used to have some type of plastic toy from the series also, but that is long gone... Thanks for the correction, all this time I've been always wondering WHAT happened that they fled and were at war, etc... Now I know... BTW, I was born in 1972, don't know what year the series was out, I just barely remember laying on the livingroom floor as I watched the show with my toy. (Of course, it may have been my older brothers toy.. and I just got to play with it... ) My childhood memory is very fuzzy at times.
I thought it was a cool way to show WHY the the battlestar and the convoy got created.. They always said they had to "flee" for Earth, the 13th colony, but this gave life to just that brief intro that started off every one of the original episodes.
We now know that humans created the Cylons, defeated them, and then we reached a truce and left them rebuild for 40 years. They get strong and come back for revenge... That is almost a classic plot right there.
Of course, there was a LOT of religious thrown in, from the Cylons to the Priest... I guess thats part of the plot... Machines find religious virus?
The Characters were interesting... even the change from Male/Female for Starbuck.. I always thought Starbuck and Apollo were a little too chummy, now we know why... Boxy was in the original, so they had to explain how... We know he was an orphan, right? now we know HOW he became an orphan. And the President... I do seem to remember that there was a female LEADER of the colony ships that had to be consulted a few times for transports and such... but the original had a councel of 12 from the colonies, didn't see that here...
I did remember we had the cool Bro, "Boomer" in the original series, but other then a minority person of color being replaced with a minority person of asain linage, there were no cool guys like the original Boomer... I really liked that character, I was disapointed by that change.
Hmmm.. Actually, I don't think I saw any black actors except a few in the background putting out fires and such... ?????
Anyways, a nice way to "re-introduce" the original series... Would I like to see it continue, sure, but how many episodes before we start seeing recycled plot lines from Battlestar, StarTrek, etc...? It pretty much stands by itself now...
BTW... I'm not trolling, nor am I trying to throw out a racist card about the lack of black characters... I just thought it was odd, thats all... nothing else. Not looking for flames...
I agree somewhat... But I've seen some buisiness where Win98 is still the standard. A local Dentist office I was in was running some bill paying software from Win95... So it IS possible that the kids leave highschool within 3 years and still see Win2k...
Heck, my wife is an M.E. and they use Windows NT 4.0 STILL!!! (A Major company with LOTS of plants across the US and CA...) Her biggest bitch is lack of USB support on her IBM thinkpad running NT4....:p
As for school, the AVERAGE user desktop is MS... but for the kids that DO excel in computer sciences, engineering, etc.. They have the option of taking the Computer Networking courses. These seem to focus on the various NOS along with hardware (Cisco academy, etc...)
So they do have access to it, but only if that is the path they seem to be heading towards... (High school wise... elementary is educational games, so its tied to the software package for that grade level. Usually Win/Mac)
I also don't have any athority as to what programs use what... I am just a network tech at the end of the day. The Network Administrator I work under doesn't even have that power... That all falls under the curriculum office. I find that they usually don't have a clue.
We did phase out Macs, but there are still some places where they are in use, and usually with a good reason... Graphic Design classes are all in a Mac G4 Lab... I can't complain there, they do a great job at that....
How did they get them into the pdf's to download/view? Huh?!!!! Yes!!! Answer me that!
They can be scanned... You just have to know how...

4) Training
But of course, we me point you to a machine that is running Windows, IE, and has the homepage set to Google and tell you that your answer is there in front of you...
Cheers!
Of course the simple answere would be:
boot Dos-format-reinstall (or reimage...)
I think the real problem is that we all worry about some threat (aids, greenhouse, astriods, etc..) killing off all life on earth ...

:p
Come on, you know I'm right...
Just head down to the local pawn shop and get a little pistol
Yep, just put it to your head and end all your worries about your impact on the environment...
No more Gas to get back and forth to work
No more wasted water by drinking or bathing...
Thats it, just pull that trigger a bit more...
No more emmitions of Carbon Dioxide by breathing...
No more Methane emmitions from too many beans...
Stretch that tendon just a biiiit more.....
No more usage of questionable energy supplies...
Ok, now that thats done, only the sane people should be left.. Now lets build that spacecraft to cover up our arms race... And maybe actually kick some AStroid while we're at it...
"Well, not if it breaks after blah blah blah"
"well, are you saying that these cameras are pieces of crap and break a lot?"
A few of the people even laughed and gave us a "you tell them" type of encoragement while we were waiting for the manager...
In the end, you gotta stand up to them...
No, No autopr0n jokes... Seriously, I was pitching a monitor away a few weeks ago... It had developed a nasty habbit of randomly getting the shakes and going blury... No big deal, lots of 17" monitors around, just pitch it and get a new one...
.5 sec to realize I was in deep sh1t before I almost went into the dumpster.
I took it out to the dumpster, lifted it up about shoulder level, and heaved it as hard as I could...
Unfortunatly, half way through the release I realized the vga cable was somehow wrapped around my arm and was quickly tightning up...
All this took about
The cable sinched around my wrist, and snapped it so hard that I was unable to even fill in the accident report, had to have a co-worker do the writing for me because it was my right hand.
Of course, he just laughed...
It still hurts now and again, I just make sure not to give it too much stress, and now have a brace for when it starts to flair up.
What, you expected a story about dropping a computer and/or monitor? That is usually on purpose to some extent with user frustration... This was truly, an accident.
Once again, no reason to renew my subscription to the pulp version of wired when I can get it free online, just a few weeks later...

There are many regular lemmings lurking about.
Really? I kind of thought they all committed suicide =).
Not true... Disney needed a good story in the 1958 White wilderness film... Lemmings don't commit suicide.. they'd rather eat each other.
Here's the link from SNOPES:
www.snopes.com/disney/films/lemmings.htm
Just trying to set the record straight for those poor little lemmings...
Microsoft sued because if you enter:
"mikerowesoft.com/index.htm"
into Google to try find the CACHED version after the slashdot affect hit it, you get back:
Did you mean: "microsoft.com/index.htm"
from the fine Google servers...
Hence, the problem with a phonetic fix...
Thanks for filling me in...
"SO SAY WE ALL."
I agree somewhat... But I've seen some buisiness where Win98 is still the standard. A local Dentist office I was in was running some bill paying software from Win95... So it IS possible that the kids leave highschool within 3 years and still see Win2k...
:p
Heck, my wife is an M.E. and they use Windows NT 4.0 STILL!!! (A Major company with LOTS of plants across the US and CA...) Her biggest bitch is lack of USB support on her IBM thinkpad running NT4....
