Im tired of Katrina already. The entire event is one huge extortion opportunity, that's all it is.

Oh, I see. People who have lost _everything_ asking for help is extortion. What fucking species are you? Regardless, there is no gun pointed at your head. Dont help, no ones making you.

It's news networks trying to increase viewership with sensationalism.

Dude, they dont have to try. A major US city being pratically submerged into the fucking ocean is pretty sensational all by itself.

It's politicians trying to entrench their position by being the first to offer the biggest aid not out of passion but out of lust for power.

You are TRULY beyound clueless... This whole thing has been a royal cluster fuck from day one, and pretty much every politician involved, from the mayor to the governor all the way to the president has screwed up some aspect of their job to one degree or another. A power grab? Right... politicians are just standing in line to claim that they were involved in what is probably the worst excuse for a disaster plan ever concieve by man. Idiot.

It's minorities pushing their equal rights backwards 5 steps by being the hoodlums they say they aren't and looting like it's Christmas.

I didnt know that criminals represented a minority seeking equal rights... Or are you actually implying that honest people faced with desperation are inclined to steal TVs? No one is trying to help them, that is what the army was sent in for. But if you actually consider taking food and water in such a situation looting I hope one day you find yourself without either in the middle of nowhere... Just you and a black or latino guy who has lots of both. May he treat you as kindly as you would treat him.

It's aging celebrities lunging at a second chance in the limelight by crying on cue on Larry King.

Ok, that one Ill give you.

If you choose to live below sea level, along the coast and don't have insurance - deal with it. If the entire country is warning you that in 2-3 days all your shit will be submerged, and you opt to stay in your home and drown or put rescuer lives at risk to move you like you should have moved yourself three days prior - deal with it.

Ok, now Im gonna rant. Those that did not have flood insurance (the VAST majority) ARE dealing with it. They lost all their stuff and they're dealing with it. Many lost their jobs too. Some even lost family. They ARE dealing with it. Most are not even asking for help. The people of southern Louisiana (of which I am one) are very proud. For every 1 person you might see on TV crying for help there are at least 50,000 who are quietly trying to put their lives back together. But whether they are quiet about it or not, most could really use a bit of help. You dont want to help, fine, I couldn't care less. But to actually be so fucking self-absorbed that you are compeled to publically complain that the mere act of help being asked for and offered in your general vacinity sickens you is fucking repugnent.

You are the moral equivalent of the looters you complain about. So selfish that your own personal status blinds you to what is going on around you.

On a different note, like humans chimpazees are social creatures. They naturally gather in troops in order to defend and care for each other. Do you know what chimps do to members of the troop that dont behave socially? They usually beat them to death with large stones. Be glad you are not a chimp.

already have a good graphics card,

That one Ill give you. Nearly any decent AGP graphics card is better than onboard graphics. On the other hand if you are talking about a PCI graphics card or some odd graphics chip (S3,etc.) you would probably be better off with the onboard stuff on at least some boards.

    NIC,

Unless you are talking about an Intel or 3Com based gigabit card, you are likely MUCH better off with the onboard NIC, as most modern motherboards include a fairly high performance gigabit controllers.

    USB audio device,

No offense but except for a few rare exceptions almost all USB audio devices suck. Even the ones that dont suck generally have very high CPU requirements and put unneeded load on the USB bus. You are WAY better off with onboard sound.

I just need a no-frills motherboard like I used to be able to buy. It seems like a waste to buy a board with all the built-in stuff (and probably pay extra for it) when I'm never going to use it.

Like I said, I would highly recommend carefully considering using the onboard stuff before making up your mind. There are alot of advantages to onboard chips and very few disadvantages. And for all but the most highend stuff they are generally just as good if not better performance wise (especially NICs). And to be honest all that extra stuff is for the most part FREE. A bare bones no frills motherboard now-a-days is either ultra cheap crap or is a specialty item that costs just as much as a good integrated board.

Do a lot of people actually use the on-board stuff?

    Yes. Most do.

Is it still possible to purchase a motherboard that's *just* a motherboard?"

Yes its possible. But I cant think of a good reason why anyone would want to... Except for the exception of Video, most of the built in stuff on a good integrated board are more than good enough for most people.

Charlie Kaufman created the two finest science fiction films of all time so far: "Being John Malkovich" and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind."

WTF? Yes, I realize technically these are both sci-fi movies, but they are not at all what the vast majority of people identify with when they think of sci-fi.

Saying they are the best sci-fi movies of all time reminds me of the year that Jethro Tull won a grammy for best heavy metal album. Those of you who consider Jethro Tull heavy metal may as well stop reading now...

Through-line series like Joss Whedon's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and Alfred Gough's and Miles Millar's "Smallville" have raised our expectations of what episodic sci-fi and fantasy ought to be. Whedon's "Firefly" showed us that even 1930s sci-fi can be well acted and tell a compelling long-term story.

I like all of those shows, but not everyone always wants to watch compelling long-term stories. I actually liked the fact that I could watch whatever TNG episode that was on at the time and (usually) not be worried about what happened last week... There is something quite different about shows that tell a completely different story each episode, and it isnt necessarily bad. It requires much less investment on the viewers part, which if you lead a busy life is a good thing.

Anyway, I for one am somewhat sad to see Enterprise go. It did mostly suck for the first 3 seasons but there have honestly been quite a few really engaging episodes this season, good enough to make me ignore the fact that the cast mostly sucks. Wish they would have gotten to this point sooner, I think the show might have caught on if they had

The point is to make the person who is submitting their credit card number resonably secure in the knowledge that they are sending it to who they think they are. This cannot happen without identity verification.

The existing fiber loop in Lafayette was built to connect the city utility and wastewater treatment plants. They didn't need a lot of bandwith, but while they were digging the trench it didn't cost a whole lot more to throw a whole shitload of fiber in the hole. Nothing is "rotting", they have always utilized some of the fiber for their own use, and the rest was dark because there was no point in buying the equipment to light it up until someone needed it.

That wasnt _why_ it was laid, that was only one of the reasons... I worked for a company that took part in the original proposals for the laying of the ring, and there was alot more being discussed than just connecting the treatment plants.

And by "rot" I dont mean physically wasting away, I mean wasted potential. There are literally Gigabits of bandwidth available on the ring and the majority of it is sitting there unused and has been for ages.

The fiber loop is _already_ a debt, and a long standing one. It was initially laid over 5 year ago, and has sat unlit since then because the city has been patiently waiting for BellSouth, Cox, or anyone else for that matter to step up and utilize it.

LUS never intended to actually run the thing themselves, the plan was always to have the telcos lease bandwidth from the city. That would still be the plan except the telcos decided that it was more cost effective for them to simply keep using their existing ancient infrastructure and give the city the proverbial finger.

Maybe it isnt optimal for the city to operate as a telco, but it is better than letting the whole thing just sit there and rot and that is pretty much the only alternative now.

Sure, 3.1, 95, etc. where basically just DOS shells, but NT, 2000, and XP certainly are NOT and have just as much a right to be called an OS as any Unix does. While you can make the case that the GUI can be seperated from the underlying OS, that does not mean the underlying OS is MS-DOS. The kernel of NT/2K/XP is VASTLY superior to DOS. I would even venture to say it somewhat superior to Linux (at least as far as raw performance/scalability goes). I like Linux, but facts are facts. Efficient threading, an excellent VM, overlapped I/O, memory-mapped files, excellent serialization primitives, etc... The "core" of XP is fairly advanced. Linux has most of the same features, but the spit and polish isnt there yet. Putting the Windows GUI on top of Linux might make a nice Linux Desktop, but it would definitely be a step backwards for Windows. Go ahead, flame away :)
