  1. I use my Palm all the time on Do People Really Use Their PDAs? · · Score: 1

    What for?
    Contacts.
    Calendar.
BART schedule (You wouldn't believe how useful this is).
    Password storage (encrypted, of course).
Calculator (Don't laugh, I'm bad at math).
Of course, it helps that it's neither big nor heavy, runs forever on a pair of AAAs, and syncs well with iCal and Address Book.

  2. Re:Really want to learn UNIX Admin fast? on Teach Yourself UNIX System Administration In 24 Hours · · Score: 1

Do not go the easy out pre-compiled route (compiler for first compiler excluded.)

Does anybody else find this as funny as I do?

  3. Re:Battery life is pathetic anyway on The Ethics of Desktop Chips Stuffed Into Laptop PCs · · Score: 1

Dude, there's something wrong with your laptop. My Thinkpad routinely gets 2 1/2 hours on battery under Linux. My PowerBook gets 3+ hours under OSX. Maybe it's time for a new battery? They do wear out over time.

  4. Not his best stuff on Two Books from Haruki Murakami · · Score: 2, Interesting

I haven't read Dance, Dance, Dance, but I did read A Wild Sheep Chase. AWSC was good, but not nearly as good as The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, which was longer, deeper, and generally more involving. If you're going to read Murakami, that's the place to start.

  5. Re:Gentoo Baby on Gentoo Linux 1.2 · · Score: 1

Gentoo is the penultimate Linux distro in my opinion.

Whereas Debian is the ultimate Linux distro? Seriously, I think penultimate doesn't mean what you think it does.

  6. Assuming this is for real... on ClearChannel Plays It Safe · · Score: 1

Can anyone explain how "Ob La Di, Ob La Da" can possibly have made it onto this list? That's like the least offensive song ever! It's so twee it's unbearable!

  7. Echo Service != ICMP on Hack Attacks Revealed · · Score: 1

Yes, I am being pedantic. Echo the _service_ runs on TCP and UDP port 7. ICMP_ECHO_REQUEST and ICMP_ECHO_REPLY are ICMP messages. When people talk about "ping floods" they mean ICMP.

  8. Re:The goodness of W2K on How Do Linux and Windows 2000 Compare? · · Score: 3

Okay...fair enough. It doesn't seem at all unreasonable that an 8-way Intel box can beat a Sun or HP box for speed on a CPU-intensive task. I just don't see what the OS has to do with it, really. Beyond handling SMP, the OS's job, in this case, is really just to get the hell out of the way. More relevant considerations might be: is it stable? Does it play well with others? Can I administer it remotely? Sure, W2K comes with a telnet server built in. But Windows isn't and has never been command-line oriented. When I can add a new vhost to IIS via the command line, I'll be impressed.

  9. While everybody's beating up on VA on Looking For Better Linux Customer Support? · · Score: 1

I've been pretty impressed with their quality of tech support. We have two of their boxes, one of which runs the stock Redhat-ish thing they ship and one of which runs Debian. When the Debian box had a bad SCSI cable, they overnighted us a replacement with no questions asked. Other than that we've had no problems at all with their hardware (as for Redhat's general suckiness, it's not really their fault...I just wish they'd start shipping with Debian.
