WE FARM ALLIGATORS FOR BOOTS. The meat currently goes to feed the other gators, and is sold to restaurants. There's PLENTY of stuff available for research.
Are you really that stupid, or do you work at it? "Reflection of society" indeed. I just don't think you intended to be the one in the mirror.
True. But to provide a completely anecdotal data point, we now have 3 Linux laptops running in my company of 35 people, as compared to one a year ago (and that was on the lead developer's box. Java app). We're a software company, but it's more than there have been in the past. Linux is rapidly approaching desktop usability for most people, and is past it for someone with Linux knowledge.
Wait... you couldn't figure out how to install Flash on Ubuntu 7.10 after TWO HOURS?
The 5th result when you search google for "flash ubuntu 7.10" is this. You read through it, enable the Restricted Repositories in Synaptic, and then just install flash.
I think you may find that this is enlightening. It boils down to this: Linux is NOT Windows. Trying to treat it like Windows sets you up for failure. You don't try to drive your car like you ride your bike, do you?
Sure, you can build a trivial app without much issue. How about porting an existing C++ behemoth like Photoshop? That's nowhere near trivial, even for an experienced Obj-C developer. Because you can't just use what you already have... you have to rewrite EVERYTHING. And in a codebase like Photoshop, that's not quite like porting Notepad.
16 bit/channel is 64bit color (16 bits per RGB, and a 16bit alpha channel. Or 16 bits per CMYK if that's the way you swing). Just, you know, so you don't look silly next time you post.
Yes, but the logical reasons that go against what they think (that engineers are scary lone gunmen) are discarded like so many arguments against their religion. Facts fall in the face of ardent beliefs for a disturbingly large number of people.
Do you even know WHY you dislike the x86 architecture? Seriously... so many people bitch about it, and I get the feeling that they don't understand what they aren't missing.
Don't get me wrong... I've used Power-based machines, etc. I've programmed on them. With the way that x86 is designed, it's pretty much a RISC core with an x86 wrapper, which gives the programmers and compilers a much easier time optimizing, as well as still running fast.
Seriously... what is this x86 hatred that's flying around so much? Is it like the AMD fans that refuse to think that Intel might produce something worthwhile?
We've gotta get the bandwidth before 1080p is even remotely possible for video mail. The thing is, for the VAST majority of people, there is no killer app that will require an upgrade right now. A low-end machine will push 1080p in H.264 no problem. A 50MP picture of junior would again require more bandwidth, and a bigger monitor. Not a faster machine.
Because people who can think rationally scare everyone else. We always have "good luck" (planning ahead), or can solve problems in seconds that they've been fighting with for hours. Not to mention a lot of us aren't religious, which makes us different, and therefore evil. Just like those "terrists" who believe in that other god and just want to kill all those red-blooded Americans.
Yeah? And my car that gets half a mile per gallon and drips oil all over works perfectly well for me. Why should I change? Fuck you if you get pissy that your road and air are all messy.
There is a reason to dislike Microsoft... they piss all over established standards and interoperability. I don't want to limit people's choice, but when their choices have such a far-reaching ill effect as Windows does, I WILL tell you that your choices are bad.
In response to your sig... "I don't do genocide, but I don't bash it"
Sometimes, there's a reason to come out against something. I purposely chose a highly hyperbolic example, but it's only to make a point. Sometimes you do need to speak out about something being bad... ignoring it will not make anything better, it will just reduce conflict, which means that nothing will improve.
xrandr. Use version 1.2 or later, and you can have multiple monitors switching pretty easily. I have a T61 with an X3100 in it... it's not fast, but it's certainly no slouch. I have Fn+F7 set up to cycle between Laptop Only, Presentation (1024x768 on both outputs) and multi-monitor, which is the automatic resolution of all connected displays (1440x900 on the laptop, and 1024x768 on my currently connected CRT). The only change I had to make was to put "Virtual 2720 1024" into my xorg.conf file so that the virtual size of the displays was large enough to accommodate all the various options.
Check here for some basic info. There was another place on the 'net that had a more detailed script you could set for the ACPI event, which I used as a base for mine (I did little things like making an xdialog pop up saying what mode the laptop switched into and so on).
Go for it, configure it. Why bitch about the default when most people don't care? You're complaining about the default being gaudy, which is you trying to piss all over everyone else's senses. If you don't want it, take it out. Most people DO want it, hence, why it's the default.
The point is, I can paint my house Cat Yellow or John Deere Green without worrying about being sued by either company. Hell, I could paint my car that color. As long as I didn't try to pass it off as related to those companies.
And that's the problem... T-Mobile is suing Engadget Mobile for painting their house T-Mobile Magenta.
Cartoons are for kids, too. Real men watch sports, and that's it. Or a skin flick if it's Friday night.
Get over yourself. It's a clean, functional, nice-looking interface. You can tweak it how you like (KDE has some very minimalist themes if you'd like), or just don't use it. The appeal is that you have to use the thing 8 hours a day at least, so you may as well have it not be harsh on the eyes. As long as it doesn't get in my way (I don't feel that it does), then I'd rather have something nicer to stare at than plain gray, square window borders.
Or do you think a stock racing car has all the interior niceties that are necessary for any driver? I mean, it's enough to control your car, right?
If that other company had called loudly and publicly for the limitations of our rights to use "intellectual property", I'd laugh at them, too. You don't laugh when a dog bites a kid, but you do laugh when the dog bites the guy who trained it as an attack dog. Irony and hypocrisy all wrapped up into one big ol' chuckle.
What's that "oldid" part of that URL? I don't see that in most wikipedia links I follow... you wouldn't be trying to pull a fast one by simply noting that Wikipedia in the past has been defaced (and quickly fixed, a whole 15 minutes it was up), yet trot it out as an operational fact, would you? Because that would be dishonest, and I wouldn't think an AC would be dishonest.

I've been watching Rick Astley on 64bit Kubuntu 8.04. Flash works fine on Linux.

Which is why you submit the code back to the original project. Then an upgrade just works. It's not a terribly hard concept to get.
You need to re-read the books... it's Bistromathics, not Bistro Mathematics ;)

I don't know why this isn't modded up higher. It made me laugh :)

And MOST of us aren't. You'd rather piss all over everyone else's enjoyment simply because yours don't match?

So let's make the database useless. If everyone's connecting, no one can be found. Set up daemons to connect to random hosts.

Just get a USB->Serial adapter. They work pretty well, believe it or not. You can just treat them just like a "normal" serial port most of the time...
So much for being able to upload family photos to a website...
