Which will bite them when the ecosystem doesn't evolve around the cheap POS that they chose to buy. Hell, look how fractured the cell phone market is, how few GOOD applications are available for any phone.
Do your taxes on an iPhone this year, and get back to me. PC's will always have a place, though their appearance may change, they may get smaller, not need upgraded as often, whatever, the concept of the PC isn't going anywhere. It'll either be a desktop or a notebook, though.
You aren't really the target consumer... the consumer who WILL make that mistake knows that they want a video game thingie that's white, and that certainly fits the bill. That it's cheaper makes it even better! Simply by posting on/. you show you have at least half an inkling about technology, and care about it. There are a LOT of people who don't, and could be taken by this.
You know, I really think that the next version of the HTML standard needs to add in tags, just so articles like that will be unambiguous to the slow people of the world. I'm also a fan of implementing the Evil bit.
Semi-OT: The only problem I've run into with Kopete was that it'd segfault when connecting to MSN, but they have that fixed with the latest patches. Might try that out if you're still having problems.
Is Vista better? Of course not! Who needs "names" to tell things apart? Tell ya what, I'll give you a great deal on Ubuntu 7.10, with a numbered version just like God intended!
I wish people would stop saying that Windows has great hardware compatibility. It doesn't! It works most of the time, but as far as hardware goes, there is NOTHING that is anywhere close to what Linux supports, triply so if you include non-x86 architectures.
And we could call that central bit of software... let's call it a "Registry" where applications register themselves. That's a great idea, I wonder why no one has thought of it before? Let's trust the app developers to do the right thing with this system-critical Registry!
Huh. And you have the same problem that you do in Windows, in that every application needs it's own updater to keep itself updated, it's own servers, etc. You wonder why ancient bugs get exploited in Windows? It's because people don't update all their software.
Nope, but they did use Cheeze Whiz as a code name for AppleScript, which is infinitely better than a Hardy Heron, right? All software development houses use code names. They use them for a reason, so ambiguities in discussion are removed. Not all of them can be called "SuperDangerMegaCat", or something "manly" and intimidating. Deal with it.
Meh. I have Compiz enabled on both my desktop and my laptop, because I like the feedback and more "natural" feel to using the GUI. I also have a Windows laptop that's been virus-free for a long time, with no performance issues (more than 2 years), and significantly more functionality than my co-workers. The IT guy here just leaves me alone to manage my own system, pretty much, and it makes it easier on the both of us. I don't think it's quite fair to denigrate all flashy GUI users as incompetents;)
But the University does research. It's business model isn't to take patents and fuck over everyone who actually wants to use them. The problem is that there's virtually no risk with insane rewards for the current model, which doesn't really put them in competition or anything with anyone. Not quite capitalism. And when you're the one non-capitalist with legal blessings in a land of capitalists, you're just a predator looking for the next victim with the government cheering you on.
Laws weren't passed against Jews at the beginning. It was simply political and social ostracizing and blaming them for all the ills of society (sound familiar?). But hey, let's just wait until it's completely obvious before we do anything, right? Then there won't be anyone left to speak out against it.
I carry all my baggage for the simple reason that I don't want to dick with incompetents, and I just want to get into and out of the airport ASAP. But I travel a lot. It's not hard to get through security, just be prepared, and think ahead. Have your liquids already in a bag, get your procedure in order, and it all works pretty well. I never hold up a security line with my things, and I always have my luggage and laptop bag, both carry-on.
Yeah, but guns on a plane can quickly escalate damages and cause a lot of incidental destruction. The only real solution is to keep cockpit doors locked and barricaded through the entire flight, period. Hell, make it automatic, so that when the plane's in the air, the cockpit door is deadbolted. Problem solved.
I think you forgot something... fortunately, I've got an extra tag you can borrow. Can't be too careful nowdays, what with the darkie terrorists trying to blow us up and all
And all those applications are installed with Windows, like they were with Mandriva? Not to mention that educational programs are much more available and less expensive for Linux than for Windows. You're deluding yourself.
Hell, try opening a large email over a non-local connection in Outlook. Even Microsoft withers in the multitasking arena. The POS locks up like a deer in headlights until it downloads the entire email.
Well, it looks like Ubuntu has a package for dansguardian, and it seems as if it probably contains a default config file, using reasonable values. Really, that's what the distros are for... setting the defaults and such. If you installed from source or another location, are you really surprised that you have to do a little bit more work to set things up? Besides, how many GUI administered packages give you the same power that dansguardian does?

You just follow orders in the Army, you don't worry about whether or not it makes sense. That's not your job. Silly civilians...

Well, to be fair, they didn't just make up the word, or if they did, it's a happy coincidence that it is a word in a couple other languages.

You know you don't even need Squid to do that? OpenSSH will do a SOCKS5 tunnel quite happily.
That's what PSK's are for. Look into using PuttyGen (or whatever it is) and make a key that your remote systems recognize.
They make network shares for a reason. Seriously... 30MB emails are stupid. Use appropriate tools for different jobs.

Get a faster machine. My laptop will transcode from a DVD to H264 at right near real-time (sans ratio changes), and it's nothing terribly special.
