    But you're screwed if you want any premium channels. It won't decode those, which is what CableCard is theoretically for. But it just doesn't work reliably.

    BTW, go watch HD next to SD. There really is a difference. I think the DRM is bullshit, but that's a completely different issue. HD is definitely worth it.

    A goes fast, B goes fast. A is an asshole, therefore, B is an asshole. Do you see the flaw in your logic? Just because you were nearly written off by someone speeding doesn't mean he came anywhere close to doing so to anyone. I know I drive as fast as I can when I get the chance, but when there's traffic around, I'm a hell of a lot safer to be around than 90% of the fucktards out there. I give you warning as to what I'm doing, slow down early, avoid accidents, etc. Fast != unsafe, it's just... fast. That said, there are a lot of douchebags who don't mind being douchebags. But going fast by itself isn't being a douchebag... going fast and cutting people off, slamming on the brakes, not signaling turns, riding on the shoulder, etc. IS being a douche.

    Ok. So, you only react when you're driving? Seems rather stupid to me. I tend to plan when I'm driving, look as far ahead of me as I can, and plan for what's happening. Buncha brake lights a mile ahead? Guess I better slow down, start getting to an exit so I can get around the traffic. The problem is that you're only stating the biological limits we have similar to dumb animals, and not giving much credence to the biological advantages we have over dumb animals.

    Try some literacy, bud. Seriously... misusing "their", "your", unable to distinguish between "loose" and "lose", non-words like "allot" and "arn't". What are you, 12?

    Some kid could dart in front of you, but that's why you pay the hell attention to what's going on MORE than just directly in front of your bumper. I drive fast, but I'm rarely in a position to get in a wreck because I slow down before coming on a traffic jam, and take into account the people behind me, giving them warning and expecting them to have slower reactions, so I haven't gotten in an accident caused by myself, much less caused an accident (yes, I do watch). It's completely possible to drive quickly and still NOT be reckless.

    So? They were also utilized to keep an eye out for deer, and presumably "innocent passers by". I'm pretty sure he's fairly invested in not getting in a wreck, no matter how fast he's going.

    You mean you're not allowed to drive a semi until you're 21. I've seen many a trucker who can't drive for shit. As an average though, they are better than most of the retards on the road, and I always give 'em room and let them in when they're signaling. I just wish I could punch the semi who's going 65 in the left lane of the road where the speed limit's 75, barely passing the people in the lane next to him, coming up on a hill that'll make him slow down. Just look in front of you! Your truck won't keep it's speed up that hill, get the fuck over and out of the way of people whose vehicles WILL handle it!

    Completely OT, and in reference to your sig:

    It was decided that way because we discovered font kerning and non-monospace fonts. You don't need two spaces when the font display properly separates the words for reading. The two spaces was a holdover from monospaced typewriters.

    If you go out of your way to buy a machine that "just works", why couldn't you go out of your way to buy a machine that's Linux certified? I understand you like OS X, but there's no reason the same thing wouldn't work with Linux. There's plenty of compatible hardware out there, and well-polished distros that just work.

    But how much better is it than Doom3, qualitatively? It'll bring your rig to it's knees, but so will running SETI at high priority. The problem is that the actual graphics have more or less plateaued. I don't see a huge difference between Doom3 style graphics and the newest cream of the crop. I mean, they have to post screenshots and point out the differences between DX10 and DX9 versions of the same game... and the framerates with the "upgraded" effects are often just crap relatively. I think we're reaching a point of diminishing returns on massive hardware investments.

    That's 20GB for pretty much uncompressed video. Full HD 1080i compressed with H.264 is like, 7Mbps. For a 120 minute move, that works out to what, 50400Mbits, or 6.3GB? That triples the number of movies in your estimate to 600 some movies. I know that's way more than I have on DVD, or would even think about keeping around on HD, and I think it's the same for everyone except serious digital packrats.

    So... in [3], what Ou is saying is that even if Vista doesn't use more "power", it's still using 3x the CPU resources to do something that actively detracts from a consumer's options in using media? And this is somehow... good for the consumer, wasting resources without giving the owner of the machine a choice in the matter? Just because it doesn't use more power from 5-15% doesn't mean that the difference between 50% and 60% utilization won't change the wattage draw. I think y'all got something a little backwards, especially when you cherry-pick your tests.

    Fixed your sig for ya... no thanks needed :) Though you are right about Personalize not needing the Cancel or Allow dialog, I am still trying to figure out where to change the icon size and text size on the desktop. Poked around for 10 minutes, and nothing I could find would do it. If that's not a poor UI, I don't know what is.

The US "intelligence" agencies have "honeynets" which are capable of (even if not yet used for) moving undesirable topics out of view by timing out the site, proxy-sending copyright infringement notices to take down articles, spamming and altering sites. Though I cannot say this has happened to me, I am sure that HOT ENOUGH sites would be and are affected. Proof? That's a pretty bold claim... I don't pretend that the intelligence community wouldn't like more control, and doesn't do surreptitious things, but random sites being taken down? Especially "HOT" sites, where the failure would be more visible? Have you tuned your tinfoil hat lately?

    Technically, you can sue anyone for just about anything. Whether it has merit or not is a different question. I'd like to think that buyers of the end product would pretty much be held not responsible for patent infringement in general, unless they contributed and knew about the infringement in the making of the product.

    But ideally, I'd like to see 90% of patents go away.

    I don't think you'd want to use a hard drive in a military vehicle. You'd barely want to use flash memory. Those things will be abused like nobody's business, and need to be indestructible. Vibrations and shocks are very bad for drives with moving parts.

    Or a notebook. Not everyone does all their computing on a desktop machine. In fact, more people use laptops than desktops any more (more laptops than desktops are being sold since 2005 or so). I'd love for my Linux laptop to be able to shut down to a completely off state and power back up more quickly.

    Yeah... try running any programs on Windows without swap, though. I know Photoshop used to get really pissed, even if you had plenty of RAM. I've never had good experiences with Windows and turning off the swap file, and very rarely hear of anyone who does it successfully.
