I think that's actually one of their strengths. Companies that run MMORPG's and such would really like to take care of their own servers. I don't trust MS for their OS... why would I trust them with a mission-critical server?
As for being free, not entirely. It's just that you can use your existing broadband is a big win for the PS2, at least in my eyes. Other people will happily hand MS money for no apparent reason.
Install Linux on it? Hasn't there been a Linux kit for the PS2 for like, ages? That Sony DOESN'T try to shut down, or call it DMCA violations if you alter the hardware you bought to get Linux to work?
Check my post above. That's the main reason I DO want backwards compatibility. Because I don't want to have all the damn consoles around. I don't know about you, but I'd prefer to have only one or two consoles to hook up, rather than 15, swapping them as I want to play different/older games.
Application crashes usually don't take a system offline for nearly as long though. An OS repair is like brain surgery, compared to getting an ingrown toenail taken care of in an application. Usually.
But it's not text based, and it's prone to corruption. If the registry is hosed, your system is hosed. Period. I can just add a new user, and the programs recreate what they need when they run under Linux. It's a much better operation model, much more stable and fault-tolerant.
I haven't seen Final Fantasy 7 released as a PS2 game. Not on any other systems than the PC. Still one of my favorites to play. They aren't going to re-release Halo. They'll come out with the Halo 2 or something else. If you like the original game and there's no backwards compatibility, you have to keep the original system around, period. Especially when the media is compatible (DVD/CD) people would really like to have the compatibility. It's NICE when you don't need a different system for all your games, even the older ones.
You obviously haven't used OSX much for development then. It's a pain. Sure, it has auto-complete, but it won't do it if you don't match case. So much for the vaunted case-insensitivity of OS X. And since when is KDE a "fucking ugly GUI"? Even the default configuration looks pretty cool to me.
Yeah, I have a G5 sitting on the desk here, and I'm using it, extensively. I still like Linux better. OS X was made for people that wear mittens for daily tasks.
What's even better is trying to get them to understand the concept of directories. We updated our program specifically for one user, and he was an egotistical, cocky bastard who couldn't figure out how to decompress the file (click on it) then copy it to where the old one was (not a very difficult task to find). We went through multiple emails, and finally ended with me on the phone with him.
A lot of people buy OSX because it "just works". Unfortunately, it's a user defect that causes most of the problems.
That's the one thing that Sony really has going for it... it's the one reason that I think a lot of people want it. There are a lot of very good games out for the PSX or PS2 that many people don't want to stop playing... I still play PSX games on my PS2, because they're fun, not because they're pretty or anything. If the XBox2 doesn't have this, they're going to lose a lot of customers. People want to upgrade, not have tons of different systems from the same company in their house.
First off, fsck you for your blanket comment about Americans. It's not that we're all dumb, it's just that we can't keep the most ignorant amongst us off of the television and public message boards.
Secondly, I concur. Even as a native english speaker, I have to think a bit more when comparing Aug to Apr. They also don't lend themselves to being sorted by a computer very well, either.
But only in the "western" world are we able to say these things without fear of quick and violent reprisal.
FYI, I count western europe as part of the western world.
The problem with your hypothesis fails with my viewing habits though.
I'm 23. I watch:
Older shows (Nick at Nite, stuff like that)
Comedy Central
Cartoon Network (much more cerebral than anything on prime time network programming)
Discovery/Learning/History channels
Sometimes the news (as long as it's not Fox)
And that's about it. Everything else currently on is a puerile intellectual wasteland, mainly concerning who is sleeping with who and backstabbing their 'friend' in the process. There's healthy human relationships for you. At least on the old shows, people got into fights and then made up in the end. Wonder why the Simpson's is so popular? Because they have real values, things people don't realize that they miss.
Make sure she doesn't have any viruses or anything on it. There was a worm I removed from a friend's computer that caused more or less random RPC faults. I never actually tracked it back to trying to access an internet host, but that could quite possibly have been what did it.
Mods: Yes, I know this is offtopic. So sue me.
Try a grocery store. I normally don't like the coercion that unions engage in, but I worked for Safeway for 2.5 years when I was in high school. They paid me pretty well for what I was doing (definitely not rocket surgery), and the union made sure that I got enough hours and pretty good benefits.
Just my experience though.
Finally it's interesting to note that EV1 advertises Red Hat Enterprise and Windows as their selling point. Infact I don't see any server with SCO Linux on offer at all.
No one runs SCO Linux. But that's beside the point. SCO's claim is that the kernel (you know, that bit that's common to all systems calling themselves a flavor of Linux?) has SCO IP in it, therefore _ALL_ versions of Linux after the 2.2 kernel are supposedly "tainted" and theoretically subject to litigation.
But then again, this is Slashdot... why would anyone start reading and understanding the articles on SCO (that have been going on for the last too many months)?
It seems that most of the tollways in my area (Denver, CO) such as E470 are government backed, but what they do is stay a tollway until the construction costs are paid off, then they become a publicly accessible highway (like C470). It seems to be a good compromise between taxes and business, and the people who use it more are the ones actually paying for it, rather than a broad, all encompassing tax on everyone.
You think the Republicans will be in power forever?
Because the Democrats are better, right? Face it, the whole political system in the US is a fiasco right now. The Dems and the Republicans are just different sides of the same kickback/political favor/corruption tarnished coin.
I've force installed a 1.5 theme on 1.6. It seems to work alright. It's just that the theme hasn't been updated, or the site hasn't been updated. More than likely the site, because the install of the theme didn't complain at all for me.
Or you might be the retard. Remember that little bit about the "natural antifreeze"? Yeah. That would keep something, say, not an ice cube? Hrm. Funny how that works. And FYI, seawater can get much colder than fresh water before it freezes.
No one said that they had to. AI is simply saying that human rights abuses are wrong, and the things that MS is doing in China help further human rights abuse. There is no legal reason they can't. It's a moral reason. I'm from the US, and it pisses me off how many assholes there are like you here, people who say 'If they law doesn't explicitly forbid it, it must be ok'.
I call shennanigans. And bullshit.
I say it's high time that people asked themselves "is this right?" more often than "is this legal?"
You could also just use Mozilla's mail client, which allows you to disable loading of remote images in Mail and Newsgroups. It's actually quite spiffy, and a hell of a lot easier than what you propose. Plus, the spam filtering puts it over the top.

The objective is sex, dude.

Hrm... this seems like something I might have to look into making sure is enabled. Any quick links for the lazy?
Never mind the legality of reselling the internet connectivity. He'd have to get a "real" connection if he wanted to start a business in the complex.

You know what's funny? Even people who eat organic food and all that have as high a pesticide levels in their blood as the rest of us "normals"
