  1. Re:You mislead on Can Open Source Save Hardware? · · Score: 1

I've not been able to get my networking working on my computer using knoppix. I'm using an nforce 2 board, and it's got 2 on board NICS... I'm using the 3com device (not the nvidia NIC) and knoppix doesn't seem to detect it.

Then there's the on board sound but it's been a few weeks since I booted Knoppix so I don't remember if that worked or not.

From the article (the first paragraph actually)

If I were to say that by shifting the emphasis from PC gaming to Xbox gaming, Microsoft pretty much took away the PC's sex appeal, and hence, reduced the need for the neverending desire for bigger, better, and faster, enthusiasts would argue that PC gaming is still a significantly better experience than on any other platform. Or, they might point to Doom III and Half-Life 2 as examples of stuff that can only be experienced optimally on a PC.

The truth is, this happened largely because of the increase(s) in speed we've seen int he past year. Once the 1Ghtz barrier was broken, most people don't need computers much faster than that. Thats why people can use an Athlon 1700 (the lowest end AMD CPU that's still fairly wildly available) and not need to upgrade their machine until it stops working; what software other than games really will require more oomph? Maybe video encoding.

Since Doom 3 and HL2 aren't out yet, it seems foolish to bring up vaporware as examples of games "that can only be experienced optimally on a PC" because you can't experience them now.

You must've missed the whining and complaining from the recording industry about how home taping was going to destroy the record business. Thats why dual tape decks were expensive and difficult to come by even in the mid 80s.

Just an FYI, this was essentially the same argument mouthed by the movie industry when they believed that VCRs were going to destroy them as well.

  5. Slight exaggeration on Who Opposes Open Source Software In Government? · · Score: 0

    >Britian, France, Japan, Peru, China and Germany are all moving to Linux and open source.

What we know is that these countries are in an identical stage as the US is regarding using open source software in government agencies. Peru considered legislation last year to do this, but I've seen NO indication that the bill was passed.

    >Hell, some are even writing up legislation that gives incentives to businesses that do so as well. Why aren't we (the United States)?

I would oppose offering incentives to businesses to use open source applications. I would oppose efforts by the government to mandate open source (as opposed to open documents) software. The government should use the best tool for the job, and not limit agencies to a specific tool based on lobbying efforts by companies or parties with a specific interest in the government's choice.

  6. Re:Remember when.... on FCC Approves Media Consolidation · · Score: 1

So let me get this straight.

A station you like is bought out by a Mexican company that undoubtably now plays Spanish music, and you're bitching about "diversity" on the radio, while in the "good old days" spanish speaking people had to listen to shitty AM stations to hear their music, or otherwise not hear it at all?

  7. Less musical diversity? I don't see it. on FCC Approves Media Consolidation · · Score: 1

I live in San Diego, a market with about 17 English language FM radio stations and Clear Channel owns or operates about 10 of them. And between the CC stations, each station has its own radio format- the only "duplicates" come from non-CC stations who have the same format (Classic Rock, Alternative, Country and top 40)

I find the diversity in music on radio to be appealing; enough so that I don't buy cds anymore because I have no need to. The radio stations play music that I like, there's enough variety in the different stations where if I'm in the mood for rap, I can listen to the rap station, or Tool & tune in the rock station, etc. Some _songs_ appeal to different genres (Tool, for example, is played on the "alternative" and the "heavy metal" stations; Jimi Hendrix on the Classick Rock & Heavy Metal stations) but for the most part, a song would have to be a current hit (and huge) to hear it frequently in listening to a specific station for 3 hours. The only formats that dosn't get any airplay are Classical music and "Big Band" but both can be found on AM stations, and classical music has a part time home on the NPR station.

I bemoan the quality of radio only because of the lack of good new music, but I place that blame at the feet of music producers and not of the radio stations. The music I hear on my radio suits me fine. Its not perfect, but it's not inferior to pre-Clear Channel days when there were 6 stations playing Adult Contemporary/Top 40 instead of the current 3 stations we have now.

Look at all of the artists who produced good music during the 80s and 90s and their attempts in the past 5 years to follow up on that success. It's not Clear Channel's fault that Michael Jackson's music sucks ass now, that Madonna doesn't know what the fuck she's doing

  9. Bittorrent clarification on BitTorrent Blamed for Matrix2 Downloads · · Score: 0

Someone help me understand Bittorrent and "leeching" because the FAQ is worthless.

It looks like to me that bit torrent is basically a client that lets you download files on the web, but seeks peers that are hosting files to make downloads faster. So if you're trying to download matrix.reloaded.mpg off bittorrent.org, the client seeks other sources of matrix.reloaded.mpg and uses them to make your download faster.

    Right?

As far as the leeching goes... well that part I don't get. How does BT know what file's I have to 'share' or will it just let anyone download any file I have once the app is installed? That's where I don't get it.

How can it prevent you from leeching if you don't have a web server or .torrent file on your computer?

Unless it's using the file you're downloading as data to send to others (like say you have 20% of it completed... other people request the file too, so your source file is used to fill their needs as well?)

I think its unfair to look at the general election, considering how close that was, and focus only on Florida and bemoan the problems Florida had. Florida's problems were obvious only because the election _in_florida_ was so close. I'm quite certain that everything said about florida could and would apply about most of the rest of the country, but who cares, since Gore won California by 1,000,000 votes, so who's going to recount California? Who's going to recount Idaho? Washington? Texas? None of those states were as close as Florida was, so there's no incentive to recount those states.

  11. Re:They should have been shut down on Circuit Court Okays Vote Swapping Site · · Score: 1

That's only because we don't have a full accounting of each and every vote in every single state. We only do that in states where the election was close, statewide.

I'd think a 500,000 vote difference... less than 1% would warrant a recount AROUND THE ENTIRE COUNTRY. Its a close election, and with irregularities around the country, and areas ripe for fraud like California, such an event would've made Florida 2000 look like a picnic.
