They send their top people to the States to work with the Cyrix design team (remember, the Taiwanese aren't a bunch of rice farmers). Meanwhile, another group is working in the manufacturing wing. In the not too distant future, manufacturing will be shifted out of the US and shortly afterwards, the design work also. Selected American employees will be kept on. Case in point, know the motherboard maker Tyan? They *were* the largest American motherboard manufacturer....they were bought by Mitac of Taiwan on 3 Feb 1999. Even before they were bought, Tyan boards were actually made here in Taiwan. FWIW, here is a quote from the Tyan-Mitac press release: "The MITAC-TYAN alliance, therefore, offers a unique combination that's bound to play a big role and leave its mark in the PC industry, a winning synergy that will add more muscle to MITAC's manufacturing and logistics capabilities. For starters, it will boost MITAC's motherboard capacity, already at 300,000 per month to 500,000 per month. It will also enhance the company's R&D capabilities, considering the fact that TYAN is undoubtedly an R&D powerhouse."

In too many cases, Taiwanese companies have bought US companies, stripped them of their technological assets and then moved production to Mainland China, the Philippines or Indonesia. According to the people I talked to at Rise (in Taiwan) their new CPU 400mhz) should be out in August. It will be SMP capable but NOT over-clockable. A note, their product specs state that their CPUs have all been tested and run Linux, Unix and BeOS. The Taiwanese are the world's leader in handwriting recognition systems. It's a lot easier and faster inputing Chinese (or Japanese) by handwriting than by keyboard. An input device and software (Window compatible, of course) sells for about $35US in Taiwan.

Believe it or not the majority of the world has VASTLY different ideas as to what constitutes "intellectual property". Also, you should remember, up until about 30 years ago, the US was THE biggest pirate of books, music and other assorted "intellectual property" in the world. It's only been since around 1982-83 that the US decided what could and couldn't be copied.

I think alot of them don't understand because Mom and Dad are still footing all their bills whether it be at home or in the dorm. One has to wonder how much work on Linux, Linus and Alan would be doing if Transmerta and Redhat weren't directly/indirectly subsidizing & encouraging them.
Did I read Hacker's post? Yes. How many of his articles have you read? I'd say he's been one of the more rational commentators around. He an advocate of FREEDOM, not OS Fascism. How was my post anti-linux? Because I don't think insulting people about an OPERATING SYSTEM is the best way to go about things? Christ, I've been using Linux on a day to day basis for quite a while. I'm in the process of getting a local ISP to switch over to Linux (I've even GIVEN them several books and copies of Linux).....what am I supposed to do? Cut my wrists on the High Altar of Linux?!?!? When I go talk to someone about Linux, I DO NOT treat them like they're ignorant. I try to point out the advantages of Linux and how it can best serve their needs. Gee, "World Domination" under Linux is begining to sound soooo enticing. I've been using Linux for sometime but I 've gotten tired of recommeding it to friends who then have to read through the insults and bullshit that the coomunity throws at anyone not toeing the party line or asking uncomfortable questions. Guess what people, there are people out there who are more mature than you, better educated, more intelligent, know more about computers than you and (gasp) DON'T use Linux. How do you think you appear to them? Unfortunately, too many people in the Linux community are turning into kind of a Serbian Special Police unit out to do a little OS cleansing. Everything sux except Linux, right? Personally, I (and many others) want to be able to use Linux, Be, Solaris,NeXT, BSD, Warp, QNX and NOT get into a silly fight with a bunch of fifteen year-olds everytime something is said they don't agree with. The Linux community should take a LONG and SERIOUS look at the effect Team OS/2 had on the public and media's perception of OS/2. Many users and former users now feel Team OS/2's fanatical efforts at advocacy did as much if not more damage to Warp as did Microsoft. Acting like a buch of assholes neither helps the community nor wins us respect. It sounds trite, but it works both ways, if we treat others with respect, they'll treat us respect and pay more attention to what we have to say.

In the paradise I live in, I pay about $125US per month and it takes me about 30-45 minutes to download 1Mb.
