your window is 54 5/16" only because you use imperials.
if USA wuold use metric your window would have been 1,20 meter, and you would easily add up an extra 20 centimeters space ending with 1,40 meter.
As you can see metric is way more easy, you meke sums with decimals, NOT with fractions!!!!!
