  1. Not really an answer just input on Ask Slashdot: VPN Service For a Deployed US Navy Ship? · · Score: 1

After being deployed for nine months aboard a US carrier a few years back I can completely understand where the want for an external network is coming from. I assume you are looking for a in-port solution, at sea this is completely against IT policy. I would get in-touch with the MWR rep they may be able to pull some strings back home.

  4. Use semi-current infection location to be worth it on Simple Virus For Teaching? · · Score: 1

So with this type of example in today's computing world, I would suggest a simple program that is autorun at start say in the registry under windows/current version/run or the like. it could write a copy of itself to the temp folder and check every 5 seconds to see if the key or file has been modified/removed. This can all be done easily with say a vbs/batch/pshel script.

    example location:
    HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\current version\run\

Just keep say the main copy in %TEMP% and try to keep persistence in the %windir%.....The possibilities are endless

and using $ for variables was awful i will $variable any day!

If I effed up the Windows registry locales, sorry. I don't use windows much anymore.

  5. LTSP on Virtualizing Workstations For Common Hardware? · · Score: 1

I don't exactly know what you are looking to accomplish, but aside from spending money to make the machine identical, you can look into LTSP or the OpenSuse version Life. These allow your normal workstations to boot over the network and then depending on what you are looking to accomplish you can have them call a Terminal services session or just use the Linux distribution that is loaded. 20 Workstations are a breeze for 1 4CPU/8GB ram server especially with the progress of local apps on the client side. Have a look :)

It all depends on what your job actually _is_. I was an electronics tech and most of us in my shop knew more about network/pc side of it than the IT guys did, it was scary. Not to mention the spooks who had no idea that it wasn't good to hang your jackets on a fiber line...

But I was treated fine promoted etc. no biggies. There was one guy who was a complete social outcast and didn't catch break very often, we("geeks") always tried to stay off his 'retribution' list.

  12. Holy Crap People~ on Solar Power Pre-Deployment To Afghanistan? · · Score: 1

This guy asks for some input and you guys go off on your tangents. Did nobody read the links embedded before they shot their mouths off? His bro is probably an E1 or E2 the pay scale doesn't change much until +4 yrs, he doesn't get hazardous duty pay until he is actually in theater. Sure $1400 doesn't seem too shabby, but if you live on base/post (as is assumed here) you don't get allowances for housing and food, you still pay federal and sometimes state taxes. Unless you want to eat Mess hall food everyday you still need to supply your own food, you also need to buy your own uniform items most of the time(granted with a little extra coin after a few years in, but not at first), pay for your own luxuries like cable/internet/phone/cell/personal grooming items etc. If you have a car then that comes out too, not to mention old loans\bills etc. So it is not a walk in the park. LAR units also move around a ton and with it being AFG the amount of power is actually and issue. And no matter how funny it may sound the power issue in Iraq is actually better then Afghanistan. I would also recommend getting him a vehicle charger versus the solar panels. Although the ones posted here may actually be fairly versatile(One setup at camp to charge may be a good idea too) Sorry I can't help with the camera though. But it looks like the helpful people here have given some good info. HTH

I think Mitch here forgot to add that Linux has its own Terminal Server Project (LTSP) and it is very well supported and as with _most_ versions of Linux it is free! As of version 5 of LTSP it is insanely easy to install and manage, if you want to check for yourself download the Alternate image of any Ubuntu flavor and hit F4 on the install screen select LTSP and go for gold! 14. NEETS = SLEEP on Best Electronics Kits For Adults? · · Score: 1

I agree that the NEETS modules are a great resource, but seriously anyone who has ever tried to read them can tell you that you will fall asleep after chapter 1. Trust me, don't do it unless you have to. My suggestion is to start in small doses, NOT using the NEETS, use a site like: http://www.allaboutcircuits.com/vol_1/index.html to get the basics down, I still use it as a refresher, and then if you feel you are ready for a more in-depth reading on the topic look in the associated NEETS module for the full-monty. Good luck!
