  1. Firefox Plugin Management on Firefox 1.5 Beta 2 Released · · Score: 2, Informative

Firefox plugins (not Addins..) are the hidden automatic way to handle extra file extensions, and are similar to ActiveX plugins for IE.
You can remove the flash plugin fully without resorting to letting the Flash load and then hiding it from the DOM model (as flashblock does - i hate the "flash" flicker it does and would rather a broken box appeared instead, i never ever want or need flash...)

Plugins are listed in firefox by browsing to about:plugins
    (a very nice report actually)

If you open about:config and change the setting "plugin.expose_full_path" to true, you can see where each plugin is located for removal.

To remove a plugin, you must delete it, or move it into a new folder.

    I just removed the files:
    NPSWF32.dll
    flashplayer.xpt

All flash now comes up with the green jigsaw "click here to download the plugin" and doesn't even attempt to load.

    Hope this helps :)

  3. GPL Removal issues on Nessus Closes Source · · Score: 1

What happens to the (albeit minor sounding) modifications which have been offered by the OSS community.
I realise the blurb says the competitors keep on taking, but if even 1 line of code has been added by someone else, then he needs their permission before he can close the source off surely?

The alternative is to remove the offending lines of code, but his actions seem akin to taking the Linux Kernel and making it closed source without a care for the copyright holders.
The modifications were given to a GPL project under the assumption it would stay as GPL.

Additionally, any GPL code which he has used to build up his application (thinking "its GPL, so I can borrow GPL bits") also needs to follow the same rules.

His comments make it sound minor, but it might be a major sticking point especially if the code isn't audited correctly.

"Virtually nobody has ever contributed anything to improve the scanning engine over the last six years," he wrote, noting that there had been minor exceptions.

He cannot just close it up without a major hunt through the code.

It appears as though all the children getting sued are of the age when internet access is used and their peers are all downloading.

Theres not been many younger kids sued, and we don't hear about the older ones because they are responsable for themselves.

I haven't actually heard about a real suit yet where they were truly wrong about the downloading habits.

The suits themselves are wrong, but their targetting seems spot on.

Probably because of a couple of things

    a) slashdot has already used up its GOOG quota for the day (not likely)

    b) Readers (like yourself) haven't submitted it yet and are instead talking in another story.

    c) They might actually be waiting for the actual news, not just the speculation about what the announcement will be (most likely)

Its not a big story until they actually announce something, and then I'm sure there will be a story (and yes, they will probably dupe it several times to make up for this "crime" of silence now)

No, they are suggesting that if you download "[eik]Web-Furniture-Designer-Pro[xp]" which is a GPL 3 compliant web service application (just like the eCommerce type web services you can find) and it includes a link to source, you cannot remove it.

The eW-F-D-P program might contain a function on the main front page saying something like "Released under GPL v3, source available [Here]"

If that is the case, then you are NOT allowed to remove that link and after modifying the software, the functionality must remain. In my eyes, this is similar to expecting a copyright notice to be on documents.

If the software that you downloaded is v3 compliant, but does NOT contain a "download source [here]" type link, then you are not going to be obliged to add this functionality.

The one question that springs up here is the following: Does the sourcecode download link have to be maintained in a working state, and does it have to point at the new valid modified source, my understanding of leaving a function working is exactly that, the function should return the same results each time it is run.
