Apple must pay a number of licensing fees covering the formats it uses... including one to MPEG LA, the licensing group representing patent holders of the MPEG-4 media format. The same is also true of QuickTime 6, which is one of the reasons why Apple charges for the Pro version of the software (and why QT6 was released late, they had all kinds of issues making that licensing deal). Don't forget, every bit of software Apple releases costs them a great deal, even if they're giving it to you for free. When the company starts charging for previously "free" wares (or charging for wares you think should be free) it's not because they've pulled a bait and switch, it's because the app is to expensive to produce to support itself.
As mentioned in my earlier post, I'm looking to write something about this for the magazine I work for... I've done a little research, and oracle denies that it was them. So either this message was a troll; it's another company entirely; or Oracle is confused/lying/clueless (your pick).
If anyone knows for certain WHICH company gave out bobble heads, email me at dewalt@cmp.com. Needless to say, i'd love to see a picture of the thing, too.
I write for a major technology magazine... any oracle employees who would like to vent in print about their cheezy bonus (anonymously, if you'd like) are encouraged to email me at dewalt@cmp.com
hell, if you work in IT at all and want to vent about your bonus, send me an email.
