working on various machines and servers, especially within
the home domain. They believe in the pluck and chuck philosophy.
One time a pc had a failing video card and was generateing a very specific
video card error. they sent us ram, mobo etc etc, and instead of sending
the vid card like the admin told them.... they ask us to ship the whole pc!?
I disagree with the pulling of linux support, its HARDWARE. If you cant run
windows diagnostics, why not include a bootdisk with the diagnostics you need?
Salvation hdd diagnostics, memtest, etc etc all bootable from the bios / prompt.
I fail to see how that has any bearing since not ONCE have they asked me to refer
to the dell diagnostics. I tell them whats fried they send me a new one. It should not
matter if its linux or windows. Fried hardware is fried hardware.

Someone starts lipping off incoherently, they get kicked and if they keep

This 'crime' surely does not justify 3 years in prison. I've seen people beaten half to death and get less

I'd sure be upset if someone was trying to frame me for something like downloading mp3s but seriously someone who mooches net of someone dumb enough not to secure their network does not deserve 3 years in prison. Then again it is Singapore and they do have rather strict laws there.
Perhaps routers should be sold with literature that says be careful whre you connect it is a CRIME to use another mans wireless without permission. Also software that only allows them to use it once there is a password and or wep installed. If you get 3 years prison for using someone else's wifi, auto roaming should be possible in Singapore, laptops sold there should come with it crippled / disabled.

I work at a somewhat large company totaling about 100 er so computers. For the most part I'm the only one who gets to deal with it.
On the client end Sp-2 seems to slaughter performance on such programs as sunsystems accounting and daybreak pay roll. anything that uses a database seems horribly slow. I've had to uninstall sp-2 like 7 times in this past week alone because users who had admin access to their box (users don't change pcs at this place) decided that they were a tech and suited to upgrade their computers to sp2. I've also noticed a very noticeable delay after right clicking any icon like say my computer it takes like a minutes (60 whole seconds) for the context menu to appear.
I think we'll be sticking with sp1 and focusing on hardware protection as M$ seems to be unable to protect itself adequately.
I live now in a very small town, transfered from our sister company but the thing is, theres no other techs in this WHOLE TOWN. So im the only on call tech for the whole town and 4 majour client corporations. all carrying about 200+ employees with computers and issues. Granted at first this was a dream job . I mean the ammount of things I've seen and learnt are astounding, but working 8 - 15 hours + then comming home to 'sleep' for UP to 6 hours kinda sucks.Some days you wonder how do I put up with the stress. When you have a store manager who for some reason either hates you or you just naturally piss her off (totally not intentional but hell if i tried i could make her have an anurism or something...... I will end up quitting this job if i dont find a stress break. How DO you deal with huge ammounts of stress. I get 2 weeks of vacation a year but i mean if I take it now i have 6 months of no vacation ill go inSANE. The boss is afraid of spiders but terrifying her with spiders may be a great way to get rid of some stress it may in turn CAUSE stress.
This book is a very level look on linux / unix security in general for the new admin or even for the god-like admin theres something even for you. the cd contains various utilities which the book explains the usage of. So you know how to setup a linux box and webserver eh? secure it! great read... so far
