its very true, usualy in the group of gamers i know i and another will download/pirate many gmaes and then buy some of the way to few good ones, and they show out friends the ones we like and alot of the time they go out an buy them. But really right now i'm playing old dos classics in my free gaming time so what do i know:)
and its the shitty games that really rely on copyprotection i think.
... in windows that is true, threads are better period. That is NOT because of process vs threads its bceause of how windows handles process and threads. threads are efficent and multiple processes aren't.
as said by someone who knows more then i do: "There are no threads in Linux. All tasks are processes. Processes can share any or none of a vast set of resources.
When processes share a certain set of resources, they have the same characteristics as threads under other OSes (except the huge performance improvements, Linux processes are already as fast as threads on other OSes). " read http://www.uwsg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0103.0/0935.html
the one that is faster and better for a task depends on: programmer skill, style and design. Do you want shared memory, harder debugging, for a bit of a speed increase, or a clean modular design, simple processes working togeather. smaller project sizes, at possibly a bit of speed cost. Its all about trade offs and in linux you can pick either so its all comes down to the programmer usualy, in windows threads are the only way to go,
Now to you last paragraph, windows is was NOT designed to be SMP, and if it was it sucked ass at it. linux has had SMP support for a long long time. And the fact windows is 4CPUs at most, and linux is running on 64+ CPU machines all the time, and on huge clusters of 1000s of boxes shows me that linux was designed pretty well.
And as always linux is ahead of the curve overall then windows (in the kernal) at all times. and runs on more system.
thats not the point, the point is that some bright kid sees it in a diffrent way when being asked to sovle it and then figures out how to do it simpley.
i thinkt he parent was suggesting that because he managed to rewire it all himself he cna't be stupid enough to not do it right with permits and the like.
umm, i'm at university. Learning more building on what i already know. Problem is its takeing till 3 year for me to learn anything new at all.
i program for a living, windows applications and device drivers, and i see code from big name hardware companies all the time, and its SHITTY. can't say names, but when you get a drier and told "it works perfectly" then it doesn't work for you, and it never could have because some idiot used & instead of && in a hug if else, and then the fact it was a huge if else that could have been done properly as a table lookup and.. well i could go on and on.
I've seen shitty class after shitty class taught by shitty professors sometiems to at a GOOD BIG university, www.sfu.ca.
A) stop being insulted by jokes, its why some women piss me off so much, they can't take things at face value they HAVE to see some deep down inner shit or something and get all defensive and stupid about stuff. And his joke was pretty funny! and very hard to take as women "bashing?"
B) its DANGLEY bits, women have the jiggly bits, men don't. ours DANGLE.
C) MCP exams don't have much to do with programming, and i dare to say most thigns to do with MS now a days isn't programming. unless its win32 or drivers that is;)
D) If you were trying to be funny you failed. maybe women just arn't funny? ^_^
O)And from personal experiance i've yet to meet any good women programmers, but then i've met very few good male programmers, most way old, so it might be that there are very few good programmers period. So the simple fact its 80-100% male in CS and ENSC classes at university means i'll probably never get to meet a good female programmer. But then with 60% females at my university you wonder why so few ladies in the sciences.
Z) so GET A LIFE!! I know i should, but i dont' have enough money to:(
i'm done ranting, time to go deal with my 2$ pints hangover.
amen, i was lucky, my dad was a programmer and he introduced me to C when i was 5 or 6 arounds.. and then bu the time i was ten i KNEW C, was building my own boxes, fried a 486 MB around that time to:), knew pointers arrays and memory management. Now here i am in university in a 300 level course 2 sem ago, CMPT 300 operating systems 1, and 1/2 the class doesn't know or get pointers/memory management.... the teach was teaching C/C++ to the class as he went. SAD!
with the next crop of programmers its gonna be hard to find truly GOOD programmers with the current system. least that means there will be well paying jobs for low level guys like me lol.
"she started displaying a remarkable memory, perhaps photographic, at a young age." almost all tests are easy when you have a good memory.
"The institute instructors assumed it would take Arfa about a year to go through the process of certification for developing Windows applications. But after four months of study and work, over summer vacation, she passed the required exams."
Seems to me to be just microsoft propaganda. creating apps in windows is drop dead easy now with C# and the other crap they have. and i mean EASY. took a VB course in university making stpid little applications for an easy 3 credit A and its easier then the code i was writing in C at 7 and 8.
NOW when a 9 year old can write/debug drivers or win32 API apps in C let me know. Because THAT is actualy hard! Now back to USB driver code i go..
so your now comparing hacking to rape, theft, break and enter, and assult?
I don't think so, theres a pretty big diffrence between those. And yes it might be the hackers fault, but a hacker can hack into a system WITHOUT causing ANY damage, and that should be noted. You can't rape steal or pillage without causing harm but certianly can hack without causing it.
(Also with rape theres the problem of IF the girl says yes then regrets it and THEN says no... or is drunk, or any host of otehr things, nothing is black and white, but then thats not rape thats something else)
Not to mention todays grads don't have the skill of the former.
used to be you loved CS to go into it, now many do just for a quick buck or a job.
i'm in 3rd year at SFU, and most poeple i know can't program worth a damn. pointers, multi threaded stuff, assembler confuses many of them. Some never used anything but java untill this year! and then here i am sitting in CMPT 300 as the teacher tried to teach C++ to most of the class and THEN theach OS OS and threads. sad.
Skill level has come way down. there are some good ones i've met, but when i look at some teaches code and find errors, and see the general lack of skill... Most of the skilled people i know are still only skilled in application level and usualy with java. So very few who know asm/C and hwo to do low level on the metal stuff.
best teacher i had was one who did work in alot of companies, he knew his shit. then i got a new young guy next sem, just got out of school and did research, he code sucked. He just didn't know things.
The guys writeing the core code of a operating system should be old vertrens, because they know what works, and they've been around forever and seen it all. I dont' care what school anyones come from, or how smart you think you are.
I work on windows device drivers, I know how hard it is to even do low level work, let alone do it right. My dads been doing drivers for 20+ years now, i'll see something and think, oh, in school, or this way is better, and most of the time, hes like no, the school way is wrong because XXXX and such. Stuff you wouldn't know unless you'd seen it done, and fail.
Experiance is worth way more then any school. Sad that the people who hire don't relize that.
so by your logic if someone was broadcasting child porn stills over the air into peoples TVs, watching them would be against the law?
Viewing isn't that big of deal, its the people actaly TAKEING the photos, selling them and doing whatever else to the child. I'd would much MUCH rather have the money wasted on this spent on trying to catch the poeple taking photos and molesting children. if 10 people get away with simpley looking at photos and 1 person who is actualy molesting/abuseing childrem is arrested instead i think thats a damnned good tradeoff.
And you know something, these poeple who like to look should go into law encforcement. then they can look all they want in the name of all that is bad an unholy! bet some already are....
there is a diffrence with computers, where most poeple dont' understand how they work at all and can only do basic things. Most people understnad cars need to be kept up, and take them to mechanics to keep them safe. But computers are not like that. they could be spyware ridden and still work. And as long as the computer works no ones life is in dager and they are not going to pay.
this is important, because you dont' always know wtf a link points to before you click on it. And if you computer chaches a copy of something you where mislead to into viewing, should you be at fault? no.
and then theres that multiple people use any given computer. and that theres no way to prove who looked at or saved what.
There are many reasons why computer should be diffrent. existing laws do not take into account computers at all and many need to be changed.
it is not the end users fault for haveing spyware, i think most people blame MS, and the spyware companies (another palce where new laws need to be taken written)
So PLEASE, take note that computers DO require diffrent laws bceause they are TOTALY diffrent from anything else.
its very true, usualy in the group of gamers i know i and another will download/pirate many gmaes and then buy some of the way to few good ones, and they show out friends the ones we like and alot of the time they go out an buy them. nah i bet its just a ploy to get win2k users to upgrade..
i dunno, 3 years ago or so i installed debian onto a 385 with a 250mb HD and some small amount of ram.
ditched all GUI stugg and it worked fatasticly.
right now i'm on a friends home network and sitting behind a firewall running a newer linux and its only a Pentium of some sorts, no HD.
linux still runs small and fast when its just the kernal and shell no WM.
anything you can do with threads you can do with process.
Its just a matter of how you wan tto program.
Oh wait, your probably talking about windows so your right YOU need to use threads or it'll be slow as hell because windows sucks! yay!
... in windows that is true, threads are better period. That is NOT because of process vs threads its bceause of how windows handles process and threads. threads are efficent and multiple processes aren't.

and the other reply so far is from a total idiot.
pretty sad that an artist can't give away what they created anymore even when they want to...

"Microsoft published manual for the VB.NET certifications.. the guy slams hungarian notation as useless and confusing"
whaaa?? isn't hungarian notation used in all win32 API and DDK code?? i could look but to lazy to find the files in the DDK
But if i remmeber right some guy at MS invented the stuff, and its used in alot of their code. Defintly the win32 API

Isn't it in the US you spend all your time and money on getting the idiots to passs and ignore the gifted because they are well off already?
seems to be backwards there somewhat...
yea your right, from TFA

or acording to the page with all the exams visual basic.......
i mean really, when i was 10 i was writeing apps in C learning a bit of C++. Its not that hard:)
it was in the vancouver sun, the injunction forbids the buyers from READING the book. i'm almost 100% sure it said that.
Thats why i haven't baught it yet, am gonna go pirate it eventually thou because looks like they are never gonna change....

i'm not sure but AOl baught nullsoft in 99 so i'm guessing winamp had already been around for a while as of then.

dude i'm in canada, vancouver, and its ~10-15C. no clue what that is in F.
wow, i'm glad i live in vancouver BC, its 10C, not much warmer then winter lol.
can you even do that in windows?
