If you don't explicitly disallow it and the devices you may use don't include limitations - well, that boils down to allowing it, doesn't it? I've got the same with my phone company. If the phone company changes the terms, I'll stop paying the monthly fee. Then I would have a very cheap phone and I can go to any service I like. Works for me...

It's not binding anymore in Europe, you just send them a letter that you want out because they changed the terms, and you're out.

Then it becomes the question what the service is worth to you. Most people will stay anyway - switching between credit card companies every now and then is not funny.

  5. Re:Why the Tech industry sucks. on iPad Bait and Switch — No More Unlimited Data Plan · · Score: 1

Certainly in Europe (and probably in the USA) they can't just change terms for existing customers, at least not without the option to back out. In NL they are trying hard (finally) to make sure you can opt out for any service in a months time. Software with those kind of statements can be sold, but they are legally void over here.

Of course, that won't stop them from writing things down anyway. As long as it takes too much effort to fight them, they'll continue doing it too. And they can still sell services together with a phone, I do think up to two years. As long as they don't change the terms you cannot opt out.

Here's hoping that they change that 2 year period to 1 year in the near future.

How the fuck am I supposed to buy anything if consumers need to take a look at a product *that* closely? That whole idea of consumers having to make decisions like that is bogus. Vote with your wallet, right. I'm trying to make a worthwhile living here.

Most of these early adapters are probably still congratulating themselves for not just looking at the tech specs and buying a product that they can actually USE. Do you think they care at all about tethering?

Yes, that was back in the day you actually had to change SD cards to get some throughput and storage space. Nowadays you can get devices with fast USB connections (Palm absolutely sucked at USB throughput) and 8 GB micro-SD cards for almost the same price as regular SD cards. There is simply no need to swap these things anymore, so size does not matter.

That said, I still prefer normal sized SDHC cards over those tiny ones. It does not make much difference for the device (I think) and I can swap them between my computer, my laptop, my eBook and my compact and digital SLR camera. I probably forgot a few devices :). Of course, you could buy micro-SD cards with a converter as well, but I admit that that is a bit too much work (I would forget to take the adapter with me for sure, or loose it etc.).

You are probably in the market for a high end iRex reader (IREX Digital Reader 1000S). It's not quite A4, but the resolution is high enough to view PDF files:

    Specs of the display:

10.2 Inch (diagonal) electronic paper display
1024 x 1280 pixel resolution at 160 pixels per inch (eInk)
    16-level grey scale

With PDF search & pen input available, although I haven't tried that (and I don't know how the input is stored).

I don't think anything comes close for business use. But it still might fall a bit short (e.g. for input reasons, eInk is hard to use for regular computer input methods) and it's priced for business use as well. I'm not affiliated with them.

Which is why I have replaced my optical drive with a nice one from newmodeUS (the only one I could find after a nice tip on Slashdot, I'm not affiliated). Now I can keep Windows/backup on my HDD and still use the SSD in the optical bay. Most high end laptops have specific replaceable drive bays. If you are (like me) stuck with a generic one, try one of these.

7 seconds for Ubuntu to boot on a cheap SL300 and a 160 GB HDD as media/backup/windows drive. Sweet.
