  1. How did they miss... on Writers Who Will Stand the Test of Time? · · Score: 1

Frank Herbert!! I mean really, DUNE for christs' sake! Despite how his son is fucking things up now, Dune, Messiah, and Children are my top books.

  2. The one loophole? on Congress Plans DMCA Sequel: The SSSCA · · Score: 1

If this God-Awful bill ever gets signed into law, the one loophole I saw was that you can only be found guilty if you are "willfully and for purposes of commercial advantage or private financial gain" ie if you break the encryption and give it to a friend, is that a commercial advantage or private financial gain? Not really, although with today's lawyers who can argue that "black is a delicate shade of white", it might be.

What if you were to post a movie online anonymously and for free? That seems to not be for commercial advantage (as you arent a commercial entity, nor are you selling anything), and you arent making money from its redistribution. You wouldnt be in violation of this act (but you would be in violation of NET).

Didn't Australia have a government gruop look into the MPAA's region coding system to see if it was in violation of anti-trust laws or something? I wonder how much they got paid to shut up.

  6. Re:Nuclear is not bad on Nuclear Booster Rockets · · Score: 2

Well I am against it because they want to store those spent nuclear rods in my backyard. 90 miles from about 1.5 million people (las vegas) is Yucca mountain which is the prime site of a nuclear waste repository. =^/ I on the other hand, want to use the serveral mile long tunnel dug into the mountian to launch items into space (electromagnetic cannon).

  7. Dangling a carrot... on TiVo Upgrade Isn't · · Score: 1

Although some might contest this is a bait and switch (albeit delayed a bit), its probably legal, although unethical. The idea that they got you to buy a tivo when a subscription wasnt required, and then took the features away after you had paid for it just another example of the American Way(TM) of doing things. Get people addicted to it, then rape thier wallets, because its not the consumers that matter, its the shareholders.

  9. AMD's superior product on Pentium IV As A Budget Processor · · Score: 3

With the release of the 1.4GHz Athlon around the bend, and the fact that a 1.5Ghz palomino + MP will be out this summer makes me think that AMDs market surge will continue. The biggest thing that hurt the P4 is that it is not SMP capable. By doing that, they just prevented it from entering the market share where people need the fastest processors (2p workstations for CAD, graphics, etc). The AMD Palomino can hit intel hard, especially with the news that the P4 cuts its clock speed by 50% when power consumption is above 55W. See

    http://www.inqst.com/articles/p4bandwidth/p4band wi dthmain.htm

for info now how the P4 reduces its duty cycle during the time when peak performance is needed the most.

As far as I am aware, there is only one way that giving stuff away could pose problems, and that is if a market player dumps stuff at below cost in order to squeeze out their competitors.

Um, isn't that what MS did with Internet Explorer? Give it away for free while NS was still charging for business/commercial uses.

  11. Taxes on my income? on European Record Industry Goes After Personal Computers · · Score: 1

"It is pretty clear when people buy blank CD-ROM's that they want to do some copying..."

I believe that is the most ignorant statement I have ever heard. Lots of people use blank CDs for things that have nothing to do with copying music CDs. Most of mine are used in conversion of old home videos on VHS tapes to VCDs, which in no way affects the music industry. So I have to pay the music industry to make a living? Since when do they have the right to tax me, which negatively effects my income, but not some carpenter who uses 'old fashioned' tools doesn't have to pay this tax?

  12. Violent videogames dont kill kids... on Crackdown on M-Rated Videogames? · · Score: 4

Kids without proper parental support and guidance kill kids, and since its not politically correct to teach morals to kids in school nowadays, the only people to teach kids right from wrong is their parents. Parents who drop the ball, or just "dont have time" to talk to their kids about this stuff are fucking it up for the rest of us... or maybe the parents dont know because they were not taught this stuff when they were kids (not too long ago).

  13. Sony is turning its back on Is Sony Turning Its Back On CD-Rs? · · Score: 1

Sony is definately turning its back on the CDR crowd. My friend got a new sony DVD player for christmas and it wouldnt play VCDs burnt to CDR media. The old Sony DVD player that his new one replaced DID play CDR media. So now all the home videos I had converted to VCD and burnt to CDR for him are now obsolete (at this time, the model numbers escape me). At the $35 per disk I charged him, he is really pissed, and I feel bad about all this too. And no, he cant switch back to his old one because it wont work with his new Home Theater system.

  14. Re:Use against civilians on EMP Artillery Shells · · Score: 1

The LAPD and various organizations already employ the use of EMPs, in devices called 'Road Patriots', which they use in high speed chases to disable the electronics of the car they are persuing (thus the end of the chase). The small rc-car looking device is launched from the underside of the police car and goes under the other car, and since most people dont use cars from the 1960s and 1970s, the car is disabled.

  15. They still fucked up... on Dune Miniseries Airs Tonight · · Score: 1

THE EYES!!! I mean really, its blue-on-blue, not a glowing blue center. Grrr, if anything i thought they would have fixed the eyes, i guess not.... other than that it was ok, i remember some of the dialogue (from the first few scenes) from the book [something about a tripod]. Other than that, I think that for someone who doesnt have time to read the book it is a passable substitute (at least perferable over the movie).

  17. e-books and such on EFF Makes Call For DMCA Help · · Score: 1

  18. demos on New Optical Disk That Holds 140GB · · Score: 1

It isnt vaporware anymore, comdex is next week, and they also have a demo scheduled this month in conjunction with Miramax Films for the premiere of the movie Bounce delivered via satellite. From what I have heard with interviews with the company, the ROM drives should be out by the summer next year and the WORM(write-once-read-many, basically like a CDR) should be out 6 months later. If this technology is viable then it would be a great way to make backups of data (an entire system backup on 1 FMD disk, or maybe every simpsons episode ever made).

  19. Re:I am all for free speech but... on Sega Pushes ISONews, and They Push Back · · Score: 1

let's use an analogy to real life: what if you had a site like drugnews.com, that tells you everything about the newest drugs released, their latest effects, and maybe has a forum with various people who know how to get those drugs and whom you can email etc.

iSONEWS.com or its forums don't tell you where to get this stuff, its only saying that the stuff exists. Thats like saying, hey, there is a new drug out there, and here are its charecteristcs. Who can you email at isonews to get info? They monitor the message boards for that kind of info, and what two people do with email is none of isonews's business, its out of their scope of control.

Everyone keeps trying to make analogies between the internet and the real world, but it doesnt work, the internet is fundamentally different, people need to wake up and realize this is a new level of human interaction. What may apply in the real world might not have any effect whatsoever on the internet and vice-versa. Viva la revolution!

  20. Timna and the MTH on Intel Cancels its Timna chip · · Score: 1

Rack up another intel foulup due to the MTH debacle. First the entire Camminogate scandal, with the RIMM slot removal, and then the recall due to the MTH. Now because they still cant get it right, they have to cancel the Timna. Once AMD gets their chipset situation together (they need a cheap/integrated chipset a la i810) to go with their Duron, they will be set to do well on the low end.
