  1. mesh of bearings on The Dismounted Soldier Problem · · Score: 3
I think the approach about a mesh of bearings that can rotate in all directions is a very good one. As for tracking the movement, it could be done with optical sensors. It would probably get slightly pricy having one optical sensor for each bearing, but it would probably be effective.

Hypothetically, it would work like the logitech "marble" trackballs. The balls would be speckled, with large contrast between the ball color and the speckle color. Optical sensors would then track the movement of the balls, and I would assume, average out the direction and the speed of the movement among all the balls.

One problem would be after-spin. When you spin a trackball, it will continue to spin for a second or two after you let go, depending on how fast you would spin them. Maybe there would be more friction imposed on the bearing mesh. It's an interesting problem.

Well what we need to do is get that murder rate back above the suicide rate. We can't have the number one mortal crime in this country being self-inflicted, that's giving the people too much power!

I think we need to start a grass-roots effort to make more murders than suicides in this country. Take a lesson from the Columbine high school shootings. If you're gonna commit suicide, take a bunch of other people, preferably annoyingly self-centered and fashion-conscious teenagers, with you.

But according to that fun children's book called the Bible, killing yourself is a mortal sin. Die with a mortal sin and you go straight to HellLand(TM). I'd dare say Hell is no adequate escape from ANY type of Earthly pain.

On the other hand, if all these hopeless people commit suicide and end up down below (not to be confused with down under, Australia) that would mean so many less depressing people up in Heaven. They're thinning out the herd!

Sorry, it just seemed funny. (Yes I'm joking about suicide. If you can't laugh about something, well... maybe you don't have a larynx or whatever gutteral body part is necessary for the act of laughter.)

And just for the record, I don't believe the Christian beliefs about Heaven and Hell. I do, however, believe the more Eastern concept of a soul who commits suicide having to linger in limbo, experiencing what they missed in life vicariously through the people they haunt as a ghost.... or something like that.

But I have the feeling most people who commit suicide aren't too concerned about the religious repricussions of their actions.

I hate to be off-topic, but your sig caught me offguard. The RBL (Realtime Blackhole List) is a travesty. The idea is to set up a list of domains that have been known to send spam that people can use as a sendmail filter to block the reciept of mail from those domains. There are two main flaws with this system.
    1. There is absolutely no verification process that goes on when a site is added to the list. Average Joe User says "This domain spammed me" and it gets added to the list, no questions asked.
    2. It blocks an entire domain, not specific users. The result of this is an incredibly high signal to noise ratio in the effectiveness of the list. If one person from an ISP with a 10,000 member subscriber base spams someone who complains to the RBL, any of the sites which filter through RBL will no longer accept mail from those 9,999 other innocent users.
I myself have had mail blocked from being sent because of the RBL. I have done nothing wrong and have spammed no one. The RBL simply serves to provide a simple solution to simple-minded people while punishing 99% of the people for the actions of 1%. It accomplishes nothing productive and I encourage anyone who calls themselves a "supporter" of the RPL to strongly reconsider.

Well scientists basically assume that the fundamental laws of physics exist unchanged throughout the universe. A planet here exudes the same gravitational pull as an identical planet on the other side of the universe.

It's also fairly obvious that humans are very different from every other life form on this planet in that we have consciousness, free will, language, and other such blessings/curses. The qualities which separate us from the animals on our planet are probably strikingly similar to the qualities that other intelligent life on other planets from their relative subversive species.

If laws of physics remain true throughout the universe, one would assume laws of genetics would remain similarly constant, and then could infer that there is a set "recipe" for intelligent life.

It's not too far-fetched to believe (assuming, hypothetically, the existence of extra-terrestrial life is already established) that intelligent alien species could be genetically similar and biologically compatible with homo sapiens. If donkeys and horses, two visually similar creatures, can mate and breed a mule, I see no reason why humans and grays could not successfully mate and form a (possibly sterile) hybrid creature.

For instance, I worked on a site recently where the content text was double-spaced and ahd loosely typed. But netscape's style sheets implementation doesn't support character-spacing attributes. The DHTML support is also horrendous. Z-indexes are virtually ignored.

That's an umbrella statement, in addition to being an incorrect one. Just like animals in the wild, not all of them are predatory. Sure, there are some pedophiles who seek out young innocent children who have no predisposition to sexual contact. But just like there are scavenger animals who wait for a weak or dead animal to pounce upon, there are also scavenger pedophiles who look for individuals who are OPEN to sexual contact (for instance someone who's already in a channel called "Father&DaughterSex").

There is quite a difference between the two types of pedophiles, and I assure you they do exist. I see it as an unforgivable crime to molest or seduce a child who is not showing any signs of sexual activity. But let me tell you I was one fucking horny bastard when I was 13, and I know plenty of girls who were just as horny as me, and would have jumped at the opportunity of having sex with an older man. Hell, I know a few who did.

In my eyes there's nothing wrong--awkward, yes, but not wrong--with having consentual sex (yes it is possible) with a minor, no matter what the age. As long as it's fully consentual, age doesn't matter.

However, this type of modem setup requires software (in the form of a driver) to handle all the tasks the computer's supposed to perform for the modem, and most modem companies who make HSP modems are too lazy to write drivers for anything but windows. If a parent wants to let their 7 year old kid watch porno, they're perfectly entitled to do that. Some people may think it's wrong, or immoral, but really it's up to the parent to decide.

When I was seven years old my parents would screen every movie we rented, and then when we watched it, they'd make me leave the room in advance whenever nudity ocured. If they rented a movie for themselves that they didn't feel I was old enough to see, they'd hide the video.
