    No, it would read US Army signs $0 Deal for Linux software if we wanted our soldiers to "RTFM, j00 n00b l4m3r" instead of, say, killing people and breaking things.

    Haven't you seen the commercial? All army people do is sit around and beat 14 year olds at video games.

    (This comment would have been much better had I remembered the name of the game in the commercial.)

    Before you all start griping, just remember... This is almost 1/2 a trillion dollars that won't be spent on "smart" bombs. Although I am not for the us military in general, I am all about it wasting it's money. Each $ wasted could be a life saved.

    Was this a positive post for our government wasting money?

    Why on earth can you concieve of this being a good thing? Because there will be fewer smart bombs purchased?

    This just in, If we want bombs, we buy bombs.

    When it's free (and illegal) there is a sense of community, giving something back to that community is a big reason why people rip and share these things.

    When it is legal and no longer free (as in beer) the attitudes will change and kazaa will die.

    If Kazaa plans on making money from using other people's bandwidth, isn't that going to be in violation of some ISP's service agreements?

    Most people who are using Kazaa are pirating software and movies. If that isn't a concern, what makes violating a service agreement important?

And, well, sadly the photon torpedo driver is closed source and no one's reverse-engineered one for Linux yet, so we have to sit there and take a pounding while the damn ship boots Windows 2349 Starship Edition.

    If you even consider reverse engineering anything, Windows 2349 will not only catch you, but deliver punishment as well.

    They're not talking about defeating file sharing--just illegal file sharing.

    See the difference? No, probably not. Copyright violation only happens when you violate copyright law. There is nothing in the letter or stated intent of this bill that would make P2P illegal per se.

    Implied intent may well be another thing (especially with the backing of Berman, the RIAA, and the MPAA) but your statement is just flat out wrong. (and hence, unironic)

    The bill, authored by Lamar Smith (R-TX) and co-sponsored by Howard Berman (D-CA), directs the FBI to develop methods of deterring copyright violation through use of peer-to-peer networks, including efforts to facilitate sharing information about suspected violators amongst law enforcement agencies.

    Defeat file sharing through file sharing. Ah the irony.

    Supporting P2P is supporting terrorist. Just like doing drugs, sleeping with people of the same sex, vandalism, murder, bouncing checks, jay walking, posting on slashdot, etc....

    This isn't an end all solution to spam though. So most of it gets filtered into another folder besides your inbox. Then you still have to look at every email in that folder and verify it's spam before deleting it.

    Granted, it does help but I would prefer an even better solution.


    It is an awesome solution. With all of it almost filtered perfectly, I can scan my eyes down it in no time.

    Porn/porn/porn/ad/ad/ad/porn/porn/ad/ad/ad/ad/so me one i don't know/virus/porn

    It's really fast because the expectation is there that it's something I don't want.

    I personally am quite satisfied with it, but I understand your point. I honestly wouldn't consider spam a problem on the internet at all.

    I'm happy with my solution.

    Might be, but you are right. Any problem is easily fixable.

    I don't understand what everyone's problem is regarding spam. It is a nonissue for me.

    Maybe SpamAssassin is just so good that I don't notice how annoyed I might be otherwise.

    This spam solution will never work because of it. If I don't respond to an email within 10 minutes, I get a call asking if I recieved it.

    Has anyone suggested tracking down and hunting spammers for sport?

    Instead of filtering out email completely, we just add [spam] to the begining on anything that is potentially spam, have it forwarded to a folder, and go through it once a week. In 3 years of using it, I've only had 1 message that was accidently called spam. And I didn't care if i recieved it or not anyway.
