    i think that computer related fields bring a disproportionate number of ppl in general, and out of those the best/brightest get to the top....

    since there are more ppl to begin with, it makes sense that there would be more better/brighter people

    i personaly can't deal w/ all those ppl, so i'm going into math, and i'll just use puters like the tool they are

    the problem is that without a co-operative congress the pres can't do much other than talk

    now if we could do something to get the congress /.ed, that would be effective, as w/ a large enough majority, the congress can do what it wants, in its areas of power (lawmaking)

    Well the thing that local companies still have over internet delivery is service. If you buy a computer from joe blow's super puters down the street and it has a winmodem, you can go back and demand a hardware modem and get it replaced that day(might charge you, but thats fair, hardware modems do caust more than software modems). If you buy a computer from jane doe's internet superstore of computers and it has a winmodem, you can probably get it replaced with a hardware modem, but not as quickly, and they probably won't think about it before shafting their next customer with a winmodem.

    Disclaimer: i had a winmodem, that must have had really poor drivers (loading netscape while connect at faster than 2400 baud would disconnect me, on a PII 266...), and now i'm bitter (but the computer was built by a local company so we just had them replace the modem with the one that was suppsoed to be in it and it worked much better)

    Is set up their servers to server pngs to the ppl who can handle it and gifs to the ppl who don't.

    Can't be too hard to have apache do most of it for you. Heck you could probably have your fancy .asp do it, just have whatever it is check the browser vendor and version against a table of support for the features in the particular graphic, and serve up the one that matches best.

    Could be expanded easily when browsers start handling translucency and animation correctly.

    that is a good question, and as far as i know, an unanswerable one. As far as i know, gif making programs do not leave a message for Unisys that they are liscensed, and if they did it could be faked.

    the issue is not that you give them information about yourself or whatever, its that they make you do something to get information.....

    its like if /. didn't let you read the stories unless you were logged in

    not having ever used the NYT's site, i imagine they hit you with ad banners anyhow, so theres no reason to inconvience readers with a login screen

    (i'm sure they also have a cookie option, but i for one do not always use the same computer)

    from personal experience, i think floppy disks are the embodiement of murphy's law.

    if you need something that is on a floppy, the only way to retrieve it is to sacrifice your first born i believe.

    as of the previous release version (4.0) and one of the prereleases i checked for it does nfs but not ftp installs
    and theres nowhere to do an nfs install from unless i d/load it myself

    Word of mouth is perhaps the best advertising money can buy, because normal marketting usually does not say much, and people who are excited about a product usually do.

    Considering that the released athlons are arguably a better proccessor than any of intels released stuff, and definately a better price/performace ratio, intel won't win this one by FUDing. Its not like an OS, your (x86) software will run with either chip, it just might run better with one or the other.

    [insert good sounding number here] words a year get added to the language, and its not because they get added to the dictionary, its because ppl use them and the dictionary writers catch on that they're being used.

    So AMD had to stick with the Socket370(?) form (which was the non-proprietary Pentium Pro socket.)


    up until athlon all of amds chips past their 486 chips went into (super) socket 7 with the exception of mobile proccessors which i have no idea about.

    pentium pro used socket 8

    Isn't that similar to having slaves and having the plantation owner have the only 'say'?

    Or what about in a marrige giving the man the only 'say'? (assuming traditional marrige)

    Are children not people?
    It seems that for all intents and purposes they are not considered to be, just as slaves and women previously weren't considered to be.

    how about educate the children so they can save themselves?

    If anybody in washington really cared about kids they would work on reducing the age of majority, so that younger people could have a say in a lot of important areas.

    Example: taxation: one of the founding reasons of the US was to get away from taxation without adequate representation, but its generally easy to get a job at 16 (flipping burgers if nothing else) and you get taxed on any earnings you make, but you have no say in how the taxes get spent. If you could vote, you would at least in theory have some say in where the taxes go.

    My gf has some training in martial arts, i think thats a good thing, cause then she can beat up ppl who are picking on me :)

    Well actually, she goes to school across the country so that makes it hard for her to come rushing to my aid, but whatever :)

    But seriously, knowing she has had martial arts training makes me sure that anything she lets me do w/ her is ok w/ her otherwise i'd be bruised and beaten on the floor (some guys would think thats fun, but not me)

    Not that i'm not a perfect gentleman anyhow but, it doesn't hurt to have confirmation that its ok.

    if somebody in the open source would have done this, it would have been much better

    actually, up until recently, according to this article, microsoft hadn't screwed it up too horribly

    i think there should be a rematch with another gaming service (maybe one that mostly specializes in chess)

    Its called moderation, its done by the masses, basically logged in users have a chance to get 5 moderation points to use within 3 days of getting them, and they can't moderate in the same thread as they post.
    you can read the moderators handbook for more info
    if you make an account you can set it never to listen to moderators and show everything

    actually, you can modify MACs, some network card drivers for windows have the functionality built right in, and at least for my cheapo $10 ne2k i was able to make some quickie changes to ne.c and have a different MAC (cable modem service was tuned to the nic in my windows pc, and i wanted to have a linux firewall and the nic wouldnt' work in the fw box (was a pci nic, and the fw is pre pci)

    i imagine if i was any good at kernel hacking i could make an extra parameter to ne.c that let me specify what MAC i want the card to have, rather than hardcoding it in the source.
