MAC addresses are easy to spoof (example, my cable modem service is tied to the MAC address for the pci nic in my win98 box, because thats what the set it up on, but my linux fw box doesn't have a pci slot, so i just made it think that its outside nic had the same MAC address as the pci nic, it works great.
They don't care because they don't know, this is probably the most likely one.
you could set up a machine to be your gateway.... ftp/http proxies are not tooo hard to setup, i'm sure theres several you could find for any platform that supports your cable modem and an additional ethernet card
you might consider setting up a mini-distro 386 or something to do ip-masq and rrlogin anyhow (if you can get to the internet 24/7, the internet can get to you 24/7 and a little firewalling never hurt)
rr in my area doesn't make us use rrlogin, although it does give 5 minute dhcp leases that don't change *shrug*
try the twiddler (http://www.handykey.com) yeah its $200, but if you want a nice alternative keyboard w/out remaping keys by hand, you'll have to shell out around that much anyhow
it fits in the palm of one hand, and leaves the other hand free, and guess what its a mouse too
i just got one for my wearable puter that i'm working on (slowly). played with it a little bit, it is hard at first, but no harder than dvorak was at first, and as a major plus if you don't like the key layout you can easily change it, although the letters printed on there would be wrong then, the way i intend to hold it, i won't see those anyhow
i guess i'll end up being trilingual keyboard wise (qwerty, dvorak, twiddler)
well hey, it would be _her(gender neutral)_ life, and i'd try to influence her to think in generally the same way as i do about those kinds of things, and i doubt she'd have the kind of money for drugs, but if she can get over all that adversity in such a way as to do crack, but hide it from me, then she's showing a lot of skills needed for the real world (she had to get the money somewhere, she found a suplier, and she avoided the feds(err her parents), and probably can fend for herself anyhow, so why not?
that being said, if i found out, i'm sure i'd try to get her to stop, but, if i can't then should i sue the crack grower?
(and no, i'm not expecting to be a parent for a long time yet)
"(which no geek argues with in theory, we just never be able to find girl geeks of our own;)"
hahah i found one:) and she's root on one of the shell boxes i use (no i'm not root, so much for being nice to her bf i guess)
its my humble and probably ill informed opinion that if ppl would get over the fact that other than a few specialized tasks (involving reproduction) males and females can do the same work at the same quality, then threads like these could be obliterated and we'd have *gasp* equality between the genders.....
but the ppl who say 'look at me i'm a (fe)male and i did (insert task here), aren't i groovy' ruin it for the ppl who are doing it regardless of their gender anyhow
Wee little problem w/ your Galileo thing, not only was he against the social norms, but he couldn't prove it either.
His basic idea was that since the earth is moving, if we take measurements of the angle at earth of the earth-sun and earth-otherstar triangle at 2 different times, they should be different. Although he is correct, his own measurements did not show this was true (the difference is _very_ small due to _very_ large distance to the otherstar)
And i bet you never learned of that in school, just that the church is bad and evil and didn't like what Galileo was saying and ruined his life because of that.
(Not that I'm justifying the actions of the church)
My SUV is immune to this (pretty much) only thing electronic is the cheap radio shack am/fm/cassete, the cobra cb (antenna is dead though oops), and the cruise which doesn't work anyhow.
Plus it can park in a compact space, and the top is removable (or was b4 it rusted solid haven't tried it)
Note that this time when M$ screwed up, it was with one of their services, which quite a few ppl rely on, not in their software.
Thus your discussion of OS is completely irrevelevent, hotmail is as usable as it is, without regard to OS or system architecture, although from what i hear it seems to favor only recent browsers.
It would be nice if they'd make a version that was specifically designed to be used as a source of 12V or 16V or some other voltage, and marketed as such, not as an add-on to such and such a laptop.
As a side effect they could just make that one, and let other ppl make it work w/ whatever laptop they want. (and i'd have another choice when i get everything else in my wearable ready to be powered)
(otherwise there would have been a lawsuit between them that was dropped later)
This was the first battlebots (of many?) i was there it was cool except their scheduling for the session i was was pretty inaccurate it started at 3 and went for '4-5 hours'.
however when me and my gf left at 9:30 (to get her home by ten) it wasn't done yet
actually IIRC from when my calculus based physics teacher was rambling on and on and i was generally not paying very much attention.....
Time compression only happens when there is relative acceleration between the two frames of refrence (the 'terd' and the earth), so for the duration of the trip (at a sustained velocity one would assume), the advancement in time is the same for both frames......
Yeah, the toc servers dumped the buddy lists like it said they would in one of the readmes somewhere on aol's site. (back when they let ppl get toc related stuff off of it)
(granted i've forgotten where exactly it said it, but if i cared, i might be able to find it again)
the main communication to the server is UDP (udp=? undenyably drops packets)
client to client communication goes directly to the clients first in all official clients (as far as i can tell), theres no way to specify a specific user is behind a firewall, and can't handle connecting to her(gender neutral) directly. I believe the clients may try to connect directly every time a message is sent, rather than once per session as would be somewhat intellegent(ironically i don't think i spelt that word correctly).
There is no authentication of the other user in direct user to user communication, with aim you can assume if the user logged in as herself, its in fact her, but if you get a message on ICQ, it could just be somebody f***ing w/ your head.
This is not to say AIM is uber protocol, its got yucky things as well, nor is it to say ICQ is bad, i usually have both running, just because of the different userbases.
Modems don't have MAC(/ARP?) addresses anyhow
MAC addresses are easy to spoof (example, my cable modem service is tied to the MAC address for the pci nic in my win98 box, because thats what the set it up on, but my linux fw box doesn't have a pci slot, so i just made it think that its outside nic had the same MAC address as the pci nic, it works great.

i've seen a 186, it was on some kind of communications device, i think the 186's are used in embedded applications
while extremely entertaining, this would make a crappy movie....

i think i read somewhere that the guy who wrote the code for that lost it in a hard drive crash
but probably nobody will read this, and i might be wrong anyhow

since you're not reading this anyhow :P
they implies pluralism
and it implies lack of gender, not gender neutrality, so it short we're SOL

if the kids have the money, they can do what they want w/ it, if the kids don't have the money, the parents shouldn't spend theirs instead.
sad thing is, they'll probably get a chunk of money out of this, enough to get all the pokemon cards they want
sounds like a sextoy for cats?
it was given a 1 because all posts from non-ac's without excessive karma (either way) is scored a 1 unless moderated otherwise

I speak of my 1978 IH Scout II
I thought they were immune to really _stupid_ lawsuits, i guess its contagious
btw, stop claiming first post when you're not even close (i've seen some ppl thinking post 9 was first)
IIRC debian has seperated it from the BSD games, but they do mention thats from whence it came

should be
otherwise there wouldn't
sorry
During the session i went to, it was about 60/40 incapacitations/otherwise decided.
Some of the bots were just not really capable of being incapacitated.... especially the all steel exterior ones w/ wheels theat went on both sides.
however when they did get incapacitated, it was usually pretty impressive.
if there are any videos of 'Ziggo' in action, check those out, that was a pretty sweet bot.
(otherwise there would have been a lawsuit between them that was dropped later)
This was the first battlebots (of many?)

ahhh yeah, that sounds like it
:)
:)
wooohoo i'm not completely insane
glad to know my incoherent ramblings about incoherent ramblings are familiar enough to get a coherent statement out of them
