There are a lot of people who have more money then they could possibly need for basic living - why should some of them not want to take a ride into space? There is (was?) company in California that would allow you to join the mile high club for 5 or 10k dollars. More money then sense - more money then time... might as well do something interesting
You probably got lucky. My point was more that the basic components are not as good - Apple is buying the same stuff as the cheap PC makers and it shows. (I am not saying that all PC makers are cheap - just that some get the least expensive components available - regardless of quality.)
For what is worth, here is my 'hit list.' Powerbook G3 replaced with Powerbook G4 by Apple. The G3 never ran right and was back to them 3 or 4 times in a few months. 2 iMac G5s - one had the video card go out (which means replacing the motherboard) the other had the screen and the DVD die. (Both fixed by Apple) The 533 G4 I am sitting at had the HD die which killed the motherboard. (My expense) My G3 desktop at work had a dead CD drive (I put in a DVD drive - also my expense). So out of my 5 recent purchases from Apple, 5 have had 'issues.' On the other hand the Performa 180 and 7100 are still running like champs. I have learned to get the extended warranties from Apple.
It used to be that any thing you bought from Apple was almost bullet proof. (ca 1995) I still have computers from that time that are running just fine. Since then they have gone to less expensive and hence cheaper parts, and this is no longer true. My five newer computers from Apple have ALL had problems. Apple fixed those problems but i'd rather have the old bullet proof ones. Still 0.1% is not a lot of defects but it will be expensive to Apple to repair.
The quality of the teaching seemed to be the bigger complaint. As an engineering professor, I think that he is correct. The basic problem is that university administrations push research and research $ as their way of ranking high in US News. (I know because this is true where I am at.) On the other hand teaching is pooh -poohed as unimportant.
We might have better schools if there were a better way to rank the real quality (teaching) at a given unversity. I have for a number of years tried to figure out a good way to measure this but have thus far failed.
I think that you are missing the true nature of what they are planning. Think about the new Moto phone - with a built in video camera AND "videoPod" or whatever you call it. This would be a killer app - TWO WAY VIDEO CONFERENCING ON A CELLPHONE
Only minor improvements are needed to go beyond break-even
That is funny! When I worked at PPPL (Princeton Plamsa Physics Lab) the guys from San Diego came and put a high speed camera on TFTR. They caught a disruption that hit a divertor plate. (Actually it took out a Langmuir probe.) There was a piece of molten crap about the size of a small melon or a softball that FLEW ACROSS the chamber - hit the inner wall and exploded - sending crap (smaller pieces) back across the chamber. The minute I saw that movie I knew it would never work.
"We're almost there. We only need minor improvements."
This is so true. Only it goes more like in the 50's - we are 20 years away - Today we are 30 to 40 years away. Hmmm seems to be goning the wrong way! (This is the truth!)
From the article: 'The laser would be used to compress and heat a small capsule of deuterium and tritium until the nuclei are hot enough to undergo nuclear fusion and produce helium and neutrons. In a reactor the energy of the neutrons would be used to generate electricity without the emission of greenhouse gases or the generation of long-lived nuclear waste.'"
Ok this is one of the stupidest stories I have ever seen. Don't you people know that this is to do 'tests' related to H-bombs? Power? HA. (Yes, I am a Plasma Physicist and I have been to the US version of this a couple of times. It is at LLNL.)
No you can't *prove* ID, but given enough time, you could potentially demonstrate that any other explanation is impossible.
This would require that you prove all other possible theories are false. How long do you suppose that would take? Scientists like to use Occum's razor. ( http://pespmc1.vub.ac.be/OCCAMRAZ.html ) In essence use the simplest model that it testable and fits the evidence. Evolution is testable, it fits and is almost the simplest. (ID is simpler but can not be tested.)
Why do most humans have 2 arms?..... OK, why don't we have 3 arms. That would be must more helpful.
OK lets think about this... early animals walked on four feet - or more - because it provided better balance while locamoting. 4 feet would be the most economical and that is what you see for most large animals. (I am including insects.) Now what are arms? Oh yes LEGS that have been tranformed to a useful new tool. Ever notice how other primates walk on their arms - in otherwords they are part time arms part time legs. We have just developed them as better arms and not so good legs.
Can people read the article before they post it? The article clearly only applies to medical or biological studies. (It has to do with the randomness on biological systems.) Chemistry, physics and related engineering studies are much better controlled. As best I can tell there are at least as many of the later..... so >50% are wrong? How?
Most of the people of South Vietnam did not want to be taken over by the North... or at the most live in a communist country. (It was a civil war.)
Which people in Iraq? I am certain that the Kurds and the Shhitis (SP?) like the fact that SH is gone.... It is just the Sunnis (~20% of the population) that are pissed. After all, they lost power. (I am not happy that the US went in but lets not lie about who wants what!)
The vast majority of the people from Afghanistan seem to be happy that the Taliban are gone and seem to to be happy that their country is finally healing. (Yes, the US can over stay its welcome but that has not happened yet. And Yes the US had a good reason to go in. Do you remember the twin towers?)
Haiti!?!? Gezz that place is run - if run is the right word - by a bunch of crooks and thugs. Each trying to be nastier than the next. If you need to understand Haiti look at Somolia... or Lebonon (SP?). Don't blame the US for trying to help.
Do I see a pattern? Yes, it is half thought out comments suggesting that everything the US does is evil. This is simply not true. Note that I am not claiming that the US is perfect but most (not all!) of what the US does is aimed at trying solve problems. Yes we screw up but then so does everyone else.
I think you're overestimating the procreation rates of Slashdot posters.
No you got the wrong proceation rate. It is the procreation rate of Apple users that you need to worry about.
For those who read/. the rate is basically zero. But this is balanced by the creative types (you know movie stars, rock stars) and that rate is some place close to 50/year. (Don't the Stones count for half of that?...)

Any ideas on now to solve this problem?

Thanks, your friends at the IRS
(Just don't give this number to a member of Congress or all of the money will be spent!)
Less than half of that. 10.2, 10.3 and 10.4 - each about $100
A new vista out your window?
Yes, I'd like that. Could mine over look the ocean? Some pine trees near by would be nice as well.

Is this in case you miss the first 5 times?
so true - and the only reason to fund these projects

That is not funny
What do you mean it is not funny? Why not? You know like the onion article?
Microsoft has promised that, the stuff about Google is just made up
Oh? Really? Microsoft promised? How? When will they do it?
Well never but that is not the point

OPPS Sorry I misread your post and thought that you were misrepresenting reality. (OK so you were but to make a point.)

The momerator of my other post was a moron. (This post is flamebait but I don't care - the moderation was stupid.)

Why is trying to stay alive sick? If someone is shooting at me I want a gun to fight back with. Better yet I want a better weapon then they have.
This is not sick, it is only simple human nature - the desire to stay alive.

Wow! Overrated...... Hey Moderator dude RTFA. Ray and Anvar are the guys running this show.

I was going to reply but it was not worth it.
