My inside connections at Verizon tell me the company is preparing to offer DirecTV in 2005 to get themselves known in the TV business. Then, by 2010 when they roll out FTTP (Fiber To The Premises), they'll be able to offer television over that. Is this what consumers want from a communications company?
A few issues:
1. What's to stop some porn-hungry guy from jerking off? This is a COMPUTER in a PUBLIC bathroom, which leads to:
2. Will there be time limits? I don't think anyone will want to leave with free Internet access, unless:
3. Will there be a horrible stench such as there is in normal porta-johns, or has MS developed the iDontStink?
...I almost know the answer: "Because this is Slashdot."
But consider the following:
1. Very few slashdotters own a working train
2. Very few slashdotters that own a working train want to control it with their palms
3. very very few slashdotters own a working train AND want to control it with their palms.
4. If this is a slashdot story, then why are non-tech-related things cut?
What are the advantages of FreeBSD over Windows 2003 Server. Both are stable OSs, capable of running a high traffic server. But, with Windows, you get the award-winning support of a Fortune 500 company. With BSD, you get nothing.
Why would anyone venture into space privately? We all know that space travel is obviously one of the most dangerous undertakings humanly possible. Why, then, would anyone in their right mind venture into space, let alone with a company which employs Neal Stephenson.
... but, this would in essence be pointless. There are guns over 100 years old that still work today, and there are millions of guns without this implemented floating around. What kind of stupid-ass criminal would buy one of these when he could steal a gun without this?
just think howit would have been if the state had given out top-of-the-line PC Laptops. Sure, the grades would be through the roof, but every once in a while, you'd get a failure.
excellent obervation. Phones will ALL be VoIP eventually, so QoS will only be becoming more and more necessary.
MS poured resources into it as the "next big thing" in desktop OSs, but it failed miserably.

...anyway? Windows 2003 firewall includes all the security you'll ever need, unless a morgan webb lover hits your site up.
I'd just like to ask:

Where's the comparison? Windows wins hands down.

we may get to a point where we no longer have a need for traditional telephones.
But you can't walk around and multitask when you're on a videophone...
What if, say, this were left on too long and it started smoking? No one would be there to turn it off. Safety hazard if you ask me.
hardly beige
HTML is better on the web, and C++ is much better for programming, let alone Java or another language. Where does XML come in?
Answer: It doesn't
Didn't Electronic Arts try this a couple years back, only to have it flop? I can't remember the name of the game...
... is this different from data mining cookies such as doubleclick and the like? Sounds like privacy invasion to me...

Just wait until a current Pentium 4 is 20 years old. The dust will be an inch thick on the inside of the case...
I hate it when I get mold growing inside my monitor!
That's when you know it's time to buy an lcd.
So, are we going to have interesting biographies on such compelling figures as Bilbo Baggins or Harry Potter??
[/blatant sarcasm]
by the end of this, I'm gonna have 1,000,000 files in system32.
