Actually, I think it's good that people are using it in the 'real' world (to a point). Most of the more severe problems may never be found in a controlled environment. Obviously, you'd want to be careful testing a piece of software, but still, it's easier to find all the little quirks, and the bigger issues before you release a final version to the masses; at that point, you get lots of complaints that the program is a piece of trash or too bug-ridden to use, etc. Then, you have to start playing catch-up. Not that I'll be beta-ing it. I'm not that brave.
I'm unfortunate enough to have one of these things in my car. As long as I keep sending money, I get to keep driving. I wasn't always good about paying my bills on time, so I have to pay the price. But, the big point here is that I am leasing that car. The company was very explicit on that point. I'm sure that most of those 'buy here, pay here' places are doing the same exact thing. That way, they can get away with it. Not that I agree with the concept, but that's the way it works. One of the benefits, is that this gadget has GPS built in. If by some chance, someone wants to steal it, the get a lawn ornament that can be tracked down and returned. Maybe not in the best condition, but isn't that why I have insurance?

That's all well and good, but if you check the cardholder agreement (and note on the back of the card), it very specifically says 'Not Valid Unless Signed.' I know of several places that won't accept a credit card that isn't signed, or that only has 'see ID' on it. It irritates me to no end. I work in retail. I have to run countless credit cards a day. The only real protection you have is that your signature matches the one on the card.
In the article, Saul Levine states: "The commission is saying it's fine to have obscenity any time of the day or night on satellite radio even though satellite radio is being made available to people without subscriptions." It would appear to me that his complaint about the free service in rental cars is a bit like "FREE HBO IN EVERY ROOM" at the Day's/Holiday/Ramada Inn, etc.
If you don't want to listen to something, change the channel. There's so many choices on Satellite Radio that are clean, family oriented entertainment. Sure, there's some questionable content every now and again on SOME stations, but for the most part, the on air talent is pretty clean.

Just because you have one,
doesn't mean you have to be one.
