i don't know what i can say besides i don't make any money based on hits or ad traffic. if you want i can send you the article in pdf format or text without ads.
there isn't an original article...besides the one i wrote, as we cooked up our mac and pc how-to and showed the hexedit way of getting back itunes, a french site also posted about it. i included that in the story as well, along with anything else which was useful. it's odd how "ad-supported" is somehow not okay, as i stare ads on/. and ads on every site including the one you mention. if you have ideas for more articles, let me know...usually the articles i write aren't found anywhere and why/. posts them.
thanks...i am not sure what more we can do besides always post as ourselves (we do, i always do), tell you that there isn't any paid placement of bullsh1t like that, always state who we are (engadget.com) and who i write for. the article right before ours was from roland about batteries and cigarettes and link to his site, but no one said anything about that....
keep in mind, 99.999% of the time when i submit a story on/. someone edits it before it goes live. this post about getting content off your ipod isn't exactly what i submitted either. usually it's edited, links added or removed and then posted. you can of course think whatever you want and suspect anything, i'm honestly not trolling for hits, i'm trying to write cool stuff i think people will like and find useful. that said, i realize some people are up to no good, so it causes any reasonable person to be skeptical about any post.
just to be clear, this was not a paid-placement. engadget has never paid for any placement on/. ever. i am not sure how much more clear it could have been that the article is from us. if you look at most of the stories, almost all are by the authors of the articles. and if they're not, it's someone not saying who they really are, any time i submit something i do it as me and make it clear who i am and who i write with.
did you not see the "we" with the link to engadget? it's pretty clear that i am with engadget. you might think this info is found in ten seconds with google, but a lot people have no idea which tools are free, which ones work and how to use them. if you can find _one_ article that shows how to do all this for macs, pcs and the hexedit info (again, all in one article that's easy to follow) please let me know. it would have been easier than spending a few hours doing this.

that's kinda the point, put all "hacks" in one spot--i get about 200 emails a week asking where all these types of sites are. think of it as an archive.org for hardware hacks.

hey seth- WIN doesn't pay slashot anything at all, ever, i and others on engadget write and edit articles, and submit them, most of what i submit doesn't get approved here, some of the text even gets editted. all that said, i personally try and write articles i think folks would enjoy, if they get picked up and approved, all the better, if they're not that interesting, you won't see them here. if you want to email me feel free to and i'll gladly do my best to answer any questions.
do you know what cameras have this? most don't (and i have a few digital cameras). the only timer options on all my cameras are countdowns, which only take one picture after 10 or 30 seconds or so.
i wrote most of the article, but as always...there was and is a team of us, so it's more fair to say "they and we". i can't take credit for everything, it's a group effort.
i agree, it would be easier if all these players just played whatever your threw at it. but i think it comes down to cost of the decoder chips and costs to license decoders. for example, you can make a desktop mp3 player that plays on your computer for free and sell it, but if your player runs on a portable device you need to pay a fee to the mp3 folks. i'm pretty sure most players convert some of the files and can't play everyting (yet).
agreed, but here's something i found out---all the major tv tuner and recorder hardware and software vendors have annouced support for the portable media center, so in theory all the meta data is all there. i thought it was odd for microsoft to do that, but it's just adding meta data to windows media videos and encoding them at 320 x 240 / 500 or 800 kbps and whatever sound-- no it's not like they care, they may make more on pmc licenses than media center xp licenses. i haven't tried this myself yet so it could all suck or be cool, once i do i'll post about it.
you don't need a media center pc, all you need a tv tuner / recorder on a xp machine (for now) and windows media player 10. that said, as i said in my review, it's not that interesting unless you record craploads of tv (and a media center does make it easier). technically, you could record with mythtv or whatever and get it to the device, it shows up a har drive and you could just send the files over (if they're wmv).
i'm pretty sure "compatible" means it can convert the file the file to play, while supported is native on the device. based on my use of the device that seems to be accurate.
why would i want to do that? i had an ipod and pocket pc. i don't shoot guns, assuming that's what you want a gps laser targeting device for, but if it did, i would make that.

i still don't quite get why a lot of people demand others enjoy things in a certain way -their way- perhaps kayaking is better for some people that choose to do a project like chart out wifi and then write about, i don't think the author (me) would ever tell anyone "hey, you need to bring a pda with you when you go kayaking" so why would anyone want to tell me how to enjoy myself? last i checked i had a great time, and i'll go kayaking again, sometimes with some tech, sometimes without- whatever makes -me- enjoy the experience more. for me, i tend to pay attention to things more if i am taking pictures, writing about it or documenting it in some way, but that's just me.

hmm, i had a great kayak paddle around the lake (3 miles worth) and got to do a cool project. seems like it's possible to have a balance between the two to me. in fact, i think i enjoyed it twice as much, and got outdoors.
