  1. Re:The interesting part (to me anyway) on Plasma Rocket Successful Full Power Test · · Score: 1

The other advantage is maximum top speed. If your hydrazine rocket can expel mass at, say, 1000 mph (making numbers up here) then the top speed of your rocket is 1000mph for reasons I hope are obvious.

I'm not a rocket scientist but I do not believe that a rocket top speed is limited by nozzle velocity. Imagine going 1000mph and throwing an object in the direction you came from. Newtons law says you will get an equal and opposite reaction... you have just pushed the rocket and it will go faster due to conservation of energy. At least until you hit relativistic speeds...

The TI-89 is real handy for solving definite integrals where the limits are variables themselves. Takes a minute or two for it to trial and error a solution but it beats doing it yourself... Mechanical engineers are better off with a HP though, more software available.

Even better, get a child. You can do it the traditional way or you can borrow one from a working mom for say a morning or an afternoon in the week. A child will distract you from your daily drudge, open up all sorts of social possibilities and get you back in contact with the rest of the human race. You will also discover that a young child is the ultimate babe magnet...

My last two and my present Mac has dual monitors, I wouldn't want to work any other way! It's even nicer to have a second computer handy when doing DVD encoding and the like. I use an old SGI O2 to keep on working & playing when the mac's processors hit 99%

I'm willing to bet your experience would have been simular if your old firm had been taken over by GE.

Working for a large multi-national company is quite different from working in a firm with fewer than 1k employees. If you worked for Siemens in Europe you would get paid overtime, paid vacation (20+ days), paid schooling, parenting sabaticals to spend time with the kids and the freedom to disagree with your boss in public(in most of the EEC). Of course Siemens USA will offer Americans a package comparable with other US companies.....

On the plus side, Americans earn at least twice as much as us Europeans.

  11. Apple Store Fairy on Updated Power Macs at Apple.com · · Score: 2, Interesting

Imagine ordering a Powermac G4 867 MHz a week before the new models come out... It was after the Expo so I thought there wasn't anything new pending. Someone at the Apple store decided to give me a break, phoned and offered to deliver the new 1,25 GHz DP instead for the same price. What would have happend if I had ordered a week earlier?
