I'm sorry, but that is just sad. You don't attack the government after they explicitly tell you they are watching. Come to think of it, you don't attack the government at all, unless you happen to be a founding father revolutionary... Rebel without a cause? nah, Rebel without a clue...
I have two very large concerns with this. What sort of security measures will be built into this? XWZ Inc. might not appreciate an employee from ABC Inc. being able to type in "budget reports for XWZ Inc." and getting it. It also seems to me that this type of system would make internet censorship a hell of a lot easier to implement...
I hate to inform you of this, but most hardware is made following these wonderful little things called "standards". Don't be wowed by the great amount of hardware windows supports, because a great deal of the time they are following "standards". Not only that, you might remember that many hardware drivers are written by the hardware manufacturer (Uh Oh, non Microsoft Software has invaded your machine!). Just because it works in windows doesnt mean *Windows* supports it.
Yes, the kernel will have more functionality. Sure, this is good for the OS, but that only tackles half of the problem of entering the desktop market. Linux really needs a somewhat standardized set of distros to sit on top of it, and a lean, mean GUI before it can hit the desktop market with any real force. I hesitate to say that we have such a userfriendly and joe public ready distro in anything we see about today.
but... Is Free Software really that feasible? Personally, I like to eat, and as such I go to the grocery store to get food. Unfortunatly, when I've chosen whats for dinner, the grocery store insists I give them money. If I can't sell my software, I can't make money. If I can't make money, I can't pay the grocer and eat. Tell me, how can the myriads of developers out there eat if they can't profit from their work?
