that weakness has affected its bottom line: for its fiscal 2013 third quarter, the company reported an 11 percent decrease in revenue from the previous year; while it enjoyed an increase in revenue from its servers and services businesses, revenue from its Consumer division dipped 23 percent
When one talks about affecting the bottom line, it is usually proper to quote Net Income, as it is the bottom line of the Income Statement. Revenue is the at the top, and while it may affect profit, if you have gains in your cost efficiencies, you might still be neutral on your Net Profit.
One question that I've always had: Why do people still use Oracle or other big name, expensive RDBMS when there are open-source offerings as complete as PostgreSQL? Is it a matter of organizational momentum?
Was in a meeting down by the Ford buildings when the tremors hit. Thought that they were doing construction on the level below us - didn't even know it was an earthquake until 30 minutes later.
I agree with the parent. This phone is not meant to kill off the Blackberries or Windows Mobile phones that business users rely on. This phone is meant to target a whole different audience. It is essentially an iPod and a Cell Phone combined into one and it also just happens to have a web browser and some cool e-mail functionality built in. The people it's really targeting are those who have the "in" phone (such as the RAZR for right now) + an iPod. It's a totally new market, hence the "Revolutionary" part that Jobs is talking about. The only question is really how big the market is.
Yes, actually, it is quite a stretch for any of the users in my office to put "two and two together" to understand what the hell that script would do. Does that make them stupid or ignorant? Absolutely not...a computer is a tool to accomplish a task, not a device which they should have to do work to so that they can work on it.
Why do folks seem to want to link DRM with EFI??? I'm not the most qualified to speak about this, so if I'm wrong, someone chime in and correct me. Essentially, there is the ability for the drivers or hardware interface to be moved to the EFI system which can then check cryptographic signatures on the drivers and itself all the way up to the OS kernel and it's interfaces.
Essentially, this could lock out FOSS applications in the long run.
It seems to go on and on forever. But then you get to the end and a gorilla starts throwing barrels at you. Here, let me fix that for you...

That makes sense though. The MacBook Pro is a professional grade machine, whereas the MacBooks in theory are just your average, everyday user kind of machines. So wouldn't a professional photographer be using a professional/workstation grade machine?
It's not stupid at all. Otherwise people could avoid taxes by being paid in cars, food, houses, etc. People get paid in all sorts of interesting manners. I get a company car, which I pay nothing for, not even the taxes on, and my company writes it off as an expense. I'm sure that corporate owned houses work in the same manner.
Whereabouts do you live that you were able to hear the boom from the shuttle re-entering the atmosphere? I'm just outside of Orlando, FL and I didn't hear a thing. And I even woke up to listen and see if I could see the shuttle making it's approach. (I was heading over to KSC this morning)
Generally speaking, I believe that you have to buy at least 15 licenses before you are able to get a VLK and the "Corporate Edition" of Windows XP Professional.
This is something that many of us in the Slashdot community have wanted for a very long time. It almost seems as if Microsoft is starting to bend to market pressure. Maybe not as much or as quickly as some of us would like, but everything needs to start somewhere.
On that note, the only one thing that I would worry about is how Microsoft plans to license thier XML schema.
So let's keep on developing all of those great open source applications, and keep the heat on the competition in the software market!
I believe that AMD makes the CPU that powers the Apple Airport Base Station, and they have a number of wireless technologies as well... Flash Memory too IIRC
How much apple makes per song
If Apple only makes about 35cents a song, then 64cents is going to the labels. Therefore, just to breakeven, Apple would need to sell music at the price of 64cents.
And not necessarily compete with KaZaA, just prove to the standard everyday user that buying music legally is better than downloading music.
I honestly wish that people would quit bitching that 99 cents a track is too high because they have to compete with free. iTMS is a legal service, while kazaa, edonkey, etc, if you download mp3s from those services, then it is ILLEGAL. For one, there is Album Artwork, you just have to enable it in iTunes. And if the physical disc means that much to you, burn it to cd. They are what, 10cents a disc nowadays and most modern computers come equipped with CD-RW drives. 20-30 cents a track would put apple right out of business. They have to pay credit card processing fees, pay fees to the labels, and pay the artist as well. They don't get as much as you would think that they would after all of this. So quit your bitching, slashdot wanted a system for downloading music at a resonable price and they got it. Now they are still bitching. Some people will just never be happy.
I am in High School right now, and I am presently a Sophomore. I am very much so into computers, and it works for me. I have never been much of an athelete, and won't lie and say that I am one. I currently am my schools sys admin. That doesn't keep me from having a social life. I still hangout with all of the people at my school. And I also have a girlfriend. (And she is not into computers at all...if that crossed anyone's mind, she is just another non-nerd.) So I don't understand that just because I am a nerd, it makes me a social reject. Actually, a lot of my friends think that it is cool that I know as much as I do about computers. My $.02
Don't want to be off topic or anything like that, but does anyone have a clue how much these things will cost? I am currently drooling over the specs of these proccessors. And are these going to replace the Athlon MP?
Wrong. It will not have TCPA in it. It will however support x86 extensions that allow it to generate keys and I believe securly store them. And as for Macs...Steve Jobs has said that he will NOT use TCPA, he believes that stolen software is a social problem. Can't speak for SPARC though, but then again I would doubt it.

You're supposed to do all that when you drive?
So that's what I've been doing wrong all along!
