The days of interacting with character based menu systems are long gone. Nobody wants to press keys on a complicated keyboard unless they are typing an e-mail or filling out a form. Application and system commands should only be accessed with a few mouse clicks thereby saving all that typing and memorizing. After all... which is easier? Memorizing some archaic CLI commands and having to remember a character based menu tree or just clicking on buttons that actually look like the function they are supposed to be doing?
And speed? Sorry, but even a lowly Pentium 90 from the late 80s would beat the hell out of your old school VAX. Just throw Linux on it and write some Bash shell scripts to emulate your outdated VAX system applications and you'd probably have a more robust system in a weekend. And if we're talking today's machines, then give me an AMD Athlon 64 with Fedora Core 3 on it and I'll show you lightning fast GUIs that would put your VAX to shame for being slower at painting it's output on that yellow phosphor terminal of yours. GOD! Can that VAX even talk TCP/IP? It's probably using Banyan VINES or DLC or something. Or maybe even (ugggghhhh the horror) serial dumb terminals. You've got to be kidding me.

We've won awards because we put the needs of the user first. Primarily, the user wants their desktop to look cool and have a lot of features. We cater to that which is why our stock continues to grow. I'll bet your company hasn't had any new clients in a long time because no one wants to deal with businesses stuck in the 60s or 70s. My husband set up a rockin', bitchin' box for me with Linux. I figured if I'm marrying a man who believes in open source stuff, I ought to give it a try. I'm not much of a computer geek to begin with. I'm a librarian. In fact when I first met him, I told him "I hate computers". He saw that as a challenge to get me a little more used to them. Over the course of our past ten years together he showed me that computers could be used for fun stuff. But, when he moved to Linux and started abandoning Windows, I wasn't sold. He understood and let me wallow in the Microshaft world for a while. But, I have to admit, as he kept showing me more and more of what a Linux desktop could really do, I was less and less satisfied with Windows.
So, I finally decided to make the big switch. He set up an account on the computer in our bedroom. (He has something like 10 computers or more. I've lost count.) I logged in for the first time and saw that everythign I needed was right there on the Gnome panel. Just one button click and anything I needed would pop up! There isn't one program that I miss from Windows that doesn't have a Linux based counterpart. I use Mozilla to browse. I use Evolution for mailm contacts and calendaring. I use AMSN to chat with my Windows slumming buddies. I love all the cute games like SameGnome, Mahjhong and Xbill. GIMP is slowly turning me into a believer that you CAN make art on a PC. OpenOffice is decent, but office apps are highly irrelevant to what both of us do in the first place. XMMS has perfectly replaced WinAMP and works just as well. Plus he's gotten WINE to run a few of my favorite games from Windows: sierra's Creepnight Pinball, Myst and a few PacMac clones.
In short, I LOVE Linux. All the money we save on software goes into buying new hardware, so the machines are always pretty up to the minute in that regard (not "bleeding edge" as he says, but decent anyway). I'm still not much of a computer geek, but he's gotten me more into computers than I used to be, and I very much love the semi-socialist feel that the whole community has. I was a socialist punk rocker back in the 80s, so I still have my leanings. If anything, I'd have to say LInux is the "Punk Rock" OS to Bill Gates "Corporate Crap Rock". Let's make that:
