  1. Hmm, for us non-Americans... on New DoD Memo On Open Source Software · · Score: 1

When I contribute to OSS projects I like to think of it as doing some work for the good of the global community. What I don't like to think of it as, is to work for a foreign military for no pay. Actually I think i rather have foreign military spend some more on programmers and have less over to spend on bombs and soliders.

Is there some alternative OSS license that don't allow the software to be used for military purposes?

I think this is a bad move by Microsoft. It only makes them seem desperate. By making this viral campaign, they openly admit that vista so far has failed in the consumer market.

This campaign really focus on the wrong issues. The main complaints over vista has never been that it isn't shiny and dazzling enough. The problems was that it makes older hardware painfully slow, the UAC annoyance, incompatible drivers etc. These are not things that a user notices in a 10 minute demo. This campaign shows nothing.

  6. Re:Help the Pirate Party on Sweden's Snoop Law Targets Russia · · Score: 1

With it's opposition against this law, the pirate party has really proved itself to be a major opinion leader in Swedish politics. They have been leading the opposition of this law since the day the party formed. Together with the Swedish blogosphere they have made this the number one political issue this year. It is rare to see so many people so pissed off over a political issue in Sweden. The government never saw this coming and they're clearly having trouble handling the situation.

Before this summer the pirate party was mainly discarded as a bunch of clowns. I think now people will start listening to what they are saying. If they keep on being visible in the media, it is very likely they will get seats in European Parliament next year.

The pages should be scaled automatically so that they are easy to read. Pages should be pre-rendered into memory so that scrolling is fast.

Considering how popular these little machines seem to become, Microsoft surely has plans. I would think something like this:

*Freshen up XP a bit with some new theme and some gadgets.
*Give it a new flashy name.
*Then practically give it away to the manufacturers of these machines.

Rather that, then to let linux machines get a foothold in the consumer market.

What you don't understand is that Johan lives in Sweden, here mobile broadband has really taken off lately. Our operators is offering very reasonable, almost flat rate, high speed mobile broadband deals. For 30 $/month you get about 5-10 GB traffic/month, at up to 7.2 mbit/s download speed and 0.4 mbit/s upload. Many here cut their old land-based broadband and just use mobile. It really makes no sense to hunt for silly hotspots, when i can use my regular broadband where ever i wish to go, with no extra charge. So from a Swedish perspective, what he says is rather obvious. It is just a matter of time until this applies to the US and the rest of the world as well.

You are wrong, there are actually places where DRM works for the distributors: A couple of years ago it was possible to buy pirated cards for your satellite-TV receiver, so you could watch all channels for free. People had been doing this since the 80's. Every time the operators invented a new encryption, it was soon cracked and new pirated cards was out for sale. But this ended a couple of years ago, when the current encryption schemes (like Viaccess) was introduced. No one has been able to crack these schemes and most people has lost hope that they ever will be cracked. So the TV networks won in the end. But I guess now people download their their TV-shows with bit torrent instead.
