The problem wasn't that the market isn't there - the problem was in execution. Let's think about it - you're seeing a shift in the average age of a gamer [average age currently is 29], so obviously you've got people of a higher age who enjoy playing video games. The fact of the matter is that if there's a group of people that are older who enjoy playing video games from their couches, these people would probably enjoy playing when they've got a few minutes on the toilet.
Do you actually believe that Nokia's failure proves the market is not there or were you just being snide?
That wasn't a personal attack pal. I was attacking the idea that since you were able to predict that the N-Gage was a failure, you must have much more knowledge and ability in predicting video game hardware sales than anyone else. The fact is everyone knew the N-Gage was going to be a failure except Nokia.
And feel free not to respond to me, although I wonder what exactly you mean by "people like you." Who am I? What do you know of me? Answer: very little. So I don't understand how you can already classify me in an entire group BUT it's no skin off my back, son.
"(vs. at a loss, like most consoles, and *certainly* most consoles at launch"
Incorrect. Nintendo has never sold a console at a loss. That's quite a few consoles in the history right there that were not sold at a loss. Atari did not sell the hardware at a loss - so there's another bunch that weren't being sold at a loss. The Saturn from Sega was not sold at a loss. The Genesis was not sold at a loss. The PSX was not sold at a loss, even though Sega charged that Sony was doing just that. Most consoles are not sold at a loss. Most consoles are sold at or slightly, very slightly above cost. People have gotten it into their heads that everyone sells consoles at a loss but it is simply not true. Stop spreading this lie.
Inciting others to commit a crime and helping to raise funds for terrorists clearly is not within the bounds of the first amendment. Freedom of speech does not extend to all speech, as everyone knows from the too-often used 'fire' in a theatre example.
Of course, the student is innocent until proven guilty [unlike in his native land] and the article was fairly light on facts. But, long story short, if the charges are true, then there is no first amendment issue to consider.
I know that this game features updated graphics and whatnot but what are the chances that it comes in at a reduced price? I mean, this is MGS1 after all.
Has anyone heard anything about this possibility or am I just asking a bit too much?
Do you mean "one" uncommon variant? And perhaps it seems odd to you but let's think about it for a moment.
My best guess is that within the XP line, Pro and Home are the top sellers. The idea that MS wants to push is custom tailored operating systems [and thus can charge more for each one since you're getting more customization for your buck] is, at best, a floundering idea for the mass market. Most people say they use Windows - not a version of Windows tailored to their individual needs. Now, from this, if MS can move large numbers of one of these custom numbers, the idea that a person needs this can take flight. Also, let's say game user guy has XP Home. In order to take advantage, they have to buy a whole new OS. See the benefits?
I don't think there are any technical reasons why it is being limited and that it has a lot more to do with getting people comfortable with the idea of different versions of Windows being appropriate for different needs in the house. With that idea, people who have four computers in the home won't be tempted to crack their single version onto all four computers but will instead buy four custom-suited versions, all "different" [according to MS] to suit their needs?
Oh my fucking god!!! You predicted that the N-Gage wasn't going to sell well! You're a genius!! JESUS CHRIST! If you say that the PSP is going to be a flaming pile of shit, you must be right! And long before the system has barely left the 'sketch a design' phase, you already know the battery life! You are truly all-knowing.
Freedom? You think people who don't raise a finger and don't understand a thing about the blood that has been shed to give them that freedom, actually deserve it? They don't. They are undeserving swine. I'll let them have their free speech and their freedom of religion and all the other freedoms they won't ever use but I'm taking the 'right' to vote back. Those who are so far below me do not deserve to have a say in how my country runs. They will be taken care of but only up to a point. Of course, the beauty of America is that you can always better yourself. Those who are trapped in the sty, may receive release if they prove themselves worthy.
And what's the matter? Worried that your boy Howard Dean won't have a shot without the unwashed masses behind him? Don't fret - he doesn't have a shot even with the unwashed masses.
Details are a little hard to come by regarding games BUT this site might be a good place to keep in mind for the future. Some possible games that I've seen mentioned there include Wipeout, a Dynasty Warriors game, a game called Joe from Humansoft, Xyanide [shooter] and PSP Racing [name subject to change I bet!] from Playlogic. That's all I've been able to gleam.
I'd guess that just as many old SNES games filled the market for GBA, old PS1 games are going to fill the market for PSP.
Who wants to pay $200+ for a portable console? Hard to say but that's because I don't employ a worldwide marketing division who are paid to survey consumers and find out exactly where certain price points are. Call me crazy but I think I trust Sony's ability to define a market for a portable better than some guy on Slashdot.
Furthermore, when the iPod was announced, did you make a similar prediction? I mean, who wants to pay $400+ for a portable music player when you can get a discman for less than $100? Sure, the $400+ model has more features but who wants to pay that much?
Yeah, I think you're wrong and it's not "just plain too expensive."
Dittohead? Nice assumption. And way to not back up your snide little statement.
Move to Canada and revel in the socialism you seem to want and love. Although, you should get a history book sometime - look up communism/socialism and see how well it fares.
You don't know the difference between a test of intelligence and a test of knowledge. There is a difference. Check this website and find out for yourself!
"Voting, however, IS a constitutional right, and the states are required to make it accessible to everyone, without any caveats."
That, my friend, is exactly why in my original post I said that we needed a constitutional amendment. I don't believe voting should be a right but rather a privilege to be earned.
Hey tough guy, something like "How did Bill Gates acquire DOS" is testing knowledge, not intelligence. There is a difference. But you don't seem to recognize that.
And I would like to know what your definition of fascism is.
I can tell you one thing - GTA 5 will NOT be out this year. That's because Rockstar has stated that GTA: Vice City is not GTA 4 and is not a true sequel. So the next GTA that comes out will either be GTA 4 OR Rockstar could give up the whole numbering convention entirely and just use the city name instead.
I too would like to see more broadband enabled games for the Gamecube. I've got friends from college who only own Gamecubes and no other console. I'd like to bring the hammer upon them from afar but without any games to play, that won't happen.
That's how you use your foes list? To mark people whose opinion you do not agree with?
Tell you what - start marking everyone as a foe because, here's a shocker, there's very little likelihood that there exists anyone whose opinions match up precisely and correctly with all of your opinions. The set of topics to have opinions on is far too large to find such a person. Everyone is your foe.
How about people on welfare? Do you trust them to vote? I don't. I know that many people on welfare are trying to get off of welfare but there are some who abuse the system and would prefer to stay on it. Obviously they're going to vote for candidates who offer them more and more services. There are many people who should not be allowed to vote...and won't be once I am king.:P
"To correct his statement, then, you're looking at, at best, a "per-developer" or "per-publisher" basis."
Right, which is not what he said.
"Personally, EA's already lost any money I might have spent on their console games by making their online play PS2-only. At the very least they could've used the same online services for GameCube play, as the only substantial difference between Nintendo and Sony in terms of the online package is that Sony is advertising and pushing online capability."
Well, there's got to be some added cost associated with adding Gamecube online support. Weigh that with the number of users who have the BBA for the Gamecube and I would guess that EA did not see enough of a market to bother with it.
"Of course not, because they can't control the line between you and them. You can't even get a guarantee on your QoS from your ISP, unless you pay business rates which guarantee a maximum downtime except in event of inclimate weather or act of god."Yes. I was more or less trying to call the AC out because he was making the claim that XBox Live was more dependable than any online servers for PS2 games; which I am not convinced of. Again, I don't play many PS2 games online BUT I've never found a server to be down when I go to play online.
That's funny - where in my original post did I say anything about literary being my yardstick for intelligence?
Allow me a moment to check it out.
Oh! I didn't say anything about what the yardstick would be! WOW! So where the fuck did you get my definition from? Furthermore, you are equating my statement that a person needs basic intelligence with a period in history where tests were designed to prevent blacks from voting. Obviously you don't have a very good understanding of history since if you did, you would know that these tests were not applied uniformly and many white people who could not pass the literacy tests were allowed to vote. Nowhere in my original post did I mention preventing people from voting based on race - I only said intelligence. Therefore your lodge of racism at me [since that is the example you cited where tests were used to exclude based on race - even if the line was that it was based on intelligence] is unfounded and childish. Crawl back under your rock.
I'd love to reply to your questions about my policy BUT you've marked me as a foe and therefore it would appear you don't value my opinion - so what is the point?
That's why we should amend the Constitution to allow only people of, at least, basic intelligence to vote. I mean think about it, if they're not intelligent enough to figure out a system for placing a vote - as complicated as it may be, there are instructions always provided - how much weight do you want to give their opinion on who should be in power?
Actually, the more MS sells, the less MS loses. Allow me to break it down for you. Microsoft spends 1 currency unit to produce a single XBox. Now let's say they produce 1,000. They're at -1,000, right? If those 1,000 units sit in a warehouse, they're still at -1,000. But let's say they ship the units and they all sell and suppose MS sells them for 0.5 current units. Then what is MS at? -500. You see how the more MS sells, the less they loose?
Finally, the more consoles ship, the greater the number of games that will ship. And for every game that ships, the more money comes into MS.
I believe the last time I heard MS was still planning on not turning a profit on the XBox but rather making it merely a beachhead. But I could have missed a press release so anyone who knows whether the XBox division is close to turning a profit, please alert me. I checked google news but found nothing.
okay, let's clear up some disinformation which has come courtesy of everyone's favorite purveyor of knowledge - the anonymous coward! first of all, each developer of a PS2 game that uses online play is free to restrict online play to broadband only. check some PS2 game boxes sometime. you might see a little icon that says "Broadband only." that's not there for show. next, cheating was a problem in SOCOM. I have found that the games I primarily play online, Madden and ESPN NBA Basketball are not plagued by any cheating. Crappy matching services? Well, you get what you pay for. I pay nothing and get service that I find acceptable for the number of hours I play online video games. I mean, I enjoy playing against my friends from real life. I don't really want to play video games against some 14 year old who puts the headset on to say some profane insults and then takes it off because he's still not mature enough to converse with strangers. But that's just me - I don't call the service crappy; I call it acceptable for my needs. I recognize that XBox Live offers the user a more complete online experience that spans games but you should recognize that some people simply don't need that much. You know what I use for match making? Instant messanger from my computer or my cell phone. Shocking, isn't it?
Finally, your "per-game basis" line is incorrect. EA's entire line of sports games supports a single buddy list and you can see what people you know are online even if you are playing Madden and they are playing NBA Live.
Dependable quality of service? Have you checked your service agreement? Does MS make any guarantees regarding service?
I don't know, I'm just asking because I am curious.
Do you actually believe that Nokia's failure proves the market is not there or were you just being snide?
[By the way, Bush is going to win the election.]
And feel free not to respond to me, although I wonder what exactly you mean by "people like you." Who am I? What do you know of me? Answer: very little. So I don't understand how you can already classify me in an entire group BUT it's no skin off my back, son.

There's the synergy for you.
Honestly, is this such a surprise to you?
note sarcasm.
And what's the matter? Worried that your boy Howard Dean won't have a shot without the unwashed masses behind him? Don't fret - he doesn't have a shot even with the unwashed masses.
Why don't you move to France?
I'd guess that just as many old SNES games filled the market for GBA, old PS1 games are going to fill the market for PSP.
Furthermore, when the iPod was announced, did you make a similar prediction? I mean, who wants to pay $400+ for a portable music player when you can get a discman for less than $100? Sure, the $400+ model has more features but who wants to pay that much?

CES stands for Consumer Electronics Show. Although, I found that their website doesn't really define the acronym unless you do some digging.
That's how you use your foes list? To mark people whose opinion you do not agree with?
