CES 2004 Coverage
TheCheat writes "CES 2004 is just getting underway in Las Vegas. It looks like there is quite a bit of coverage from several websites including: Anandtech's revelation of Intel and AMD roadmaps; Tom's Hardware's look at Xbox2 rumors; A look at Microsoft's keynote at ExtremeTech; and finally a look at some BIG monitors at TrustedReviews. It looks like CES is much bigger than COMDEX this year."
My penis is bigger than Comdex was last year. And I am a FP troll, so that doesn't speak well for my penis.
A freakin' 76 inch monitor!?
My god.. its like some sort of idol for geekish worship.
CES has been underway since the first CES press conferences started on Wednesday! There are a lot of places that have already been coverint CES for 3 days before /. got to it!
/. 3 days prior. Now I'm crying because /. is losing its edge...
I usually laugh when I hear the news report something I heard on
Were are going to need some really hi-res pr0n to make best use of that. Hmm HDTV pr0n maybe :)

Plasma displays seem to have gotten all the media attention for some reason, but DLP projectors and displays are superior in just about every measurable way: brightness, weight, resolution, etc. Plus DLP screens are far less of a maintenance nightmare: the only thing you will ever have to replace is the bulb, and that only once every 3 or 4 years. Plasma screens, on the other hand, are not expected to have a total lifetime of much longer than that.
Oh yeah, and vim is better than emacs.
Would it have really been too hard to define CES and COMDEX in the article header?
Considering my Monitor (24") is bigger than my TV (21"), I think I value computing more than "entertainment" :)

Funny you should be compairing Win to Linux. I just spent over an hour hunting down and purging adware from my Win2K box (How it got there; accidential web click? Who knows), something I'd never have to do on my Linux box. Your average home user would've spent a lot more time than that with tech support, reinstalls, etc or they'd have given up trying to remove it. I wouldn't trust Windows with anything more important than my copy of Solitaire.
This is one I've been looking at lately... http://www.ibizpda.com It projects the keyboard onto the desk and you just type... it detects your fingers and registers the keystrokes. I have heard that it's more of a hunt and peck than real typing, but PDAs, who cares? They are at CES and have nominated for best of show. Also, it makes a hot penny stock! ;) http://www.pinksheets.com/quote/chart.jsp?symbol=I BZT

With the New Year celebrations barely over, the technology industry has descended on Las Vegas for the Consumer Electronics Show. With convergence being more than just the buzz word it's been in previous years, this is going to be a very interesting show indeed.
Although the show doesn't officially start until the 8th of January, there were a few key press announcements and briefings held on the 7th of January.
First up was a press briefing from LG that was held at the rather unsociable hour of 8am. This was hardly ideal for those of us who had flown in from London the night before, but several cups of coffee took care of my jet lag.
LG would definitely have you believe that size matters. It doesn't seem that long ago that LG flew me out to Monte Carlo to see its 60in plasma display, which was the world's largest plasma screen at the time. Well, LG hasn't sat back on its laurels and again holds the title for largest plasma screen with a 76in display. The size of this screen is quite simply staggering and no doubt the price will be equally staggering. That said, anyone who has a living room large enough to accommodate a 76in screen should be able to afford one.
The native resolution is also pretty impressive for a plasma at 1,920 x 1,080, so it could be used as a corporate presentation device if your company has the budget. And despite its mammoth viewable area it sports a depth of only 83mm.
This 76in plasma screen is the largest in the world.
LG hasn't put all its eggs in the plasma basket though and has a whole array of new LCD HDTVs as well. Again bigger is better and the LCD range is topped by a new 55in model sporting a 176-degree viewing angle. Native resolution is 1,920 x 1,080 and the contrast ratio is 500:1. There are also new 42, 37 and 30in models, all of which include integrated digital receivers. Unfortunately, we won't be able to make much use of the HDTV capability in Europe, but hopefully this will change eventually.
This new 42in LCD is one step down from the flagship 55in model.
Of course large digital screens aren't much good without a source and LG also has a few new Digital Video Recorders. The LGDVDR313 is a multi-format DVD recorder while the LGHDR414 is a multi-format DVD recorder with the added bonus of an 80GB hard disk. DVD recorders with integrated hard disks seem to be part of every manufacturer's product line up right now and it's not difficult to see why. With an HDD and DVD recorder setup, you can record everything to the hard disk and then edit and transfer the video you want to keep to DVD.
Record to hard disk, then transfer what you want to keep to DVD.
Now make with the honey and the insects and the video!
redundant? This is far from redundant...
I know what COMDEX is but I certainly had never heard it called CES (and I have been on Slashdot forever).
Ninja Gaiden was one of my favorite nintendo games of all time growing up. i made a video where i set its now famous opening scene to a soundtrack of "Welcome to the Jungle" by GnR.
.
I don't know for sure, but i imagine that NG will only be available on the X2. Please, someone, tell me i'm wrong about that. Tom's review of Microsoft's presentation on the future of console gaming (it's chilling, frankly) leaves me with sweaty palms and a dry mouth. EVERYTHING hosted on MSN? Passport is a big enough pain in the ass already.
I've considered buying an X-Box already for titles like Halo and for the kickassness that is X-Box Live . . . but i resist, because it's like making a deal with the devil. I am tempted to sell out, i really am. I mean, have you SEEN how many crap games are flooding the market right now for PS2? I'm horrified every time i enter Wal-Mart (of course i would be anyway, but that's beside the point).
Agh. Ninja Gaiden . . . Microsoft . .
Moments like these are why god invented beer.

On last night's Screensavers, I think I heard Leo LaPorte say something about how Jay Leno was unmercifully ribbing Bill Gates throughout the keynote speech. I'd love to see a video clip or even a transcript of that. Any links?
From GamesIndustry.biz:
Infinium Labs' proposed console, the Phantom, has made a showing at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas as announced by the company earlier this week, but only in the form of a box which was not switched on.
The Florida-based start-up showed off a Phantom console on the Windows Embedded Device showcase stand at the event, but although the system sported a full array of connectors on the backplate, it was not powered up or demonstrated in any way.
In terms of physical design, the box is almost exactly the same as the previously seen concept art and renders, and its size belies the standard PC components from which it is built.
However, the fact that Infinium Labs did not properly demonstrate the console working is likely to add fuel to speculation that the entire project is some form of elaborate hoax or scam - even though this seems increasingly unlikely.
The presence of the Phantom on the Windows Embedded Device stand, if nothing else, proves that if Infinium Labs is a hoax, it is a hoax which has taken in Microsoft along with several other key companies in the industry.
Hoax or not, however, such a lacklustre and content free unveiling for the machine on its first public outing is unlikely to boost confidence in the device, which promises a "new way to deliver content" for the games industry, ever actually making it to the market.

here's a link from dell's website selling an NEC 84inch plasma monitor!
Dell is marketing it as an 84-inch Plasma Monitor, but it's just "four NEC PX42VP4 Plasma Displays and the required wall mount bundled together". Not the same.

You didn't help that much. Sony doesn't make DLPs, and they don't make their signature Grand Wega LCD rear projection sets in 41". Closest is 42". But it is still not a DLP.
A friend has a DLP projector. Looks great, but Rainbows are very evident to most people, not the minority you usually here. It is the minority that find them an annoyance or cause of headaches. I have yet to sit down with someone and point out the rainbows and have them tell me they can't see them. For everything else I agree but the tradeoff is rainbows.
Yes, it is coming out for X-Box, which i don't have. No, it isn't coming out for PS2 or for GameCube, both of which i do have.
the point is that i don't want to buy an x-box, but NG might make it too sweet to resist.
Sorry if i made that unclear.

Bahh, you haven't been paying very much attention. Samsung has had a ton of lamping problems with their DLP sets, and rumor has it they are even replacing the bulbs in them with a new design, requiring a retrofit. (Source: AVSForum).
Furthermore, Sony's newest line of LCD rear projection sets, the Grand Wega IIIs, have had their own spate of lamping problems. There have been widespread failures of the lamping systems (which are compact arc lamps), and Sony's still not 100% sure what the issue is. My first GWIII failed after a week, and there are several others on the AVS Forum who have had theirs fixed and still they don't work right.
I bnought the GWIII because the DLPs were rather harsh with SD content, and the image was overall a little too pixelish -- it FELT like a computer driven display, while the GWIII felt a little more film like to my eyes.
As far as long term reliability once you get past the lamping systems and replacing a couple of $200 bulbs in them, nobody REALLY knows. DLP uses micromirrors, and we don't really know how long those will last. LCD panels won't last forever, either.
As for plasmas longevity, we don't really know what that's like in terms of ordinary TV usage. They feel too fragile for my tastes, but we have two at work used for displaying PowerPoint, and despite the marketing people's use of a solid color logo in the same corner of every page for hours on end, I don't notice any evidence of burn in on them, and they're over 2 years old. The AVS Forum plasma posters seemed to indicate that the anti-plasma noise is much overstated, none noticing any evidence of burn in or other problems.
Anyway, there are no perfect technologies. You just accept the tradeoffs you think are worth it, and hope that spending $3k+ on a TV doesn't make you a fool in 4 years.
You call that certification, i call that toilet paper.
i kick morons like you out of my building all the time. because your too stupid to know how dangeros you are. i dont know where you pulled those numbers from your ass maybe. but get a fsking clue, the real world uses unix and linus for enterprise apps.
and those are the most worthless certificates a person can have, hell eaven a cna is better that that,
LCoS is offering the highest resolutions and even more impressive color contrast (with the exception of direct, not projection, LCD). They cost about 25% more than a DLP set of the same resolutions.
The units are not wall-hang thin, but they are light and space saving, despite being projection units.
Maintenance and care is similar to that of a DLP box.

See here for something likely out of CES about the AMD/Intel efforts to stop buffer overflow code from being executed.

Will someone please elaborate? I was channel surfing past CNN saw that there is a porn expo going next door. Is that really true. If so that is truely a place the be for a geek.
Of course, if you install Mandrake 9.2 on the computer attached to your LG display, it won't work any more -- just like their messed up CD-ROM drives.
Wow, your grammar and spelling is atrocious.
AMD64 arches already have a PAE NX bit option, it's just not being _used_ by Windows until XPSP2 comes out.
It should be noted that most non-x86 ISA's already have had NX bits for ages, and that OS's such as OpenBSD or even linux with PaX patches take advantage of this on such architectures already (in addition to providing workarounds for x86 and ppc arches are are less on the ball).

Has anyone been by the Turtle Beach booth yet and taken a look at the new Media Tron? There was a post on the AudioTron mailing list regarding the new device, but I havent heard anything since. Post any info you got!
It says it is 1080 by 1920. It looks like it could be 1080p, but I couldn't find the tech details. Anyone know?
I want a 1080p display, but the upcoming Samsung is the only one I've seen that is.
(1st off 2,430+ meters for the rest of you) I've heard of bad things happening to plasma sets in high altitudes (http://www.plasmatvbuyingguide.com/plasmatv/plasm atv-altitude.html)
What I don't quite understand is that my 60" Sony LCD set has a high altidue setting but it gives no reason why.

Verizon is launching 1xEV-DO nationwide. This is a cellular (fully mobile) data technology that delivers 300-500 kbps average downstream thoughput, and 30-70kbps upstream. Peak rates are 2.4Mbps downstream and 153.6 Kbps upstream. The service is already operational in San Diego and Washington D.C and is marketed as Broadband Access.
Think Richochet on steroids. The US has caught up with and surpassed Europe on wireless with this one.

Did I nail that, or what? Judging by your karma, I'd say I did.

plasma screens also emit a lot of heat.
There's quite a few plasmas around now that run very cool, and don't need to have a fan built in like the previous generations did. Panasonic has been making good PR strides with the silent fanless operation of all their recent models. That's really useful if you have a high quality cinema setup with crystal clear sound where you can hear a pin drop.
In addition to plasma wattage falling, DLP fans should check out the heat generated by their projectors. There may be no heat reaching the display screen, but there's tons of it concentrated in a much smaller volume at the light source, and that's pretty bad!

It might have a high altitute setting that alters the fan speed, which otherwise would be reduced at altitude by not being cooled as much...

We purchased some Plasma TV's for a trade show a few years back $14,000 each and bought 2. Some idiot decided to display a webpage that showed email errors for over a year! Needless to say the screens are junk now.
Damnit! I thought the AVN award show was this weekend. Now the only pornstars I'll see will be on an LCD display....big change, huh?

If you're a certified professional, you would know that Linux -ISN'T- an OS, it's just the kernel, the GNU tools make up the majority of the OS.
There is no 'Linux' 7, the kernel is up to 2.6. Apache, the most common webserver on Linux is forked between 1.3 and 2.0, IIRC.
Other things, including your wording and the vaugeness of your language indicate that you've been reading too many 'Business Week' and 'IT Professional' magazines and not enough manuals.
If what you were saying were true, that IIS is almost three times faster than Apache for serving web pages, why does over 60% of the web run off Apache? Do you really think server operators and administrators are masochists?
What about security? Sure, there are lots of patches for both platforms, but only one has regular root exploits that actually do large-scale damage to businesses, and only one doesn't even LET you uninstall several major components that present security risks.
Okay, I'm done venting. Go back to reading microsoft.com.
"Sometimes, I think Trent just needs a cup of hot chocolate and a blankie." -Tori Amos on Nine Inch Nails
I'm really getting tired of all this DLP rainbow nonsense. The key to what you say is...
...the point being you have to point them out! Rainbows happen, yes, and almost everyone can see them when looking for them, but you have to be sweeping you eyes across the screen at high speed in order make one appear. Rainbows do not occur when simply watching a picture on a DLP screen. Your friends probably get their headaches from all the extreme eye motion you are making them perform to see the rainbows in the first place!
I have yet to sit down with someone and point out the rainbows and have them tell me they can't see them
The exact comparison to DLP rainbows is seeing the flashing of LED's when you quickly sweep your eyes around the room. Normally no one sees the LEDs flashing at 60Hz, but it IS possible if you try hard enough.
Its like the guy that goes to the doctor and says, "I think something's wrong with my head Doc. It hurts every time I bang my head on the wall."
Essentially you have to point them out so they know what the heck you are talking about. But I don't have to do anything to make them evident to myself, just watch the movie. Nobody I know gets a headache from them.
Watching underworld the other night, which is largely very dark, the rainbows were inescapable.
They are the most intrusive artifacts of any display technology. Now a 3 chip DLP might be really sweet.
