As a wise man once said, can't we all just get along?
That was meant as joke. Of course, you're right that many (maybe most) proprietary software companies actively discourage cooperation. However, there are also quite a few that actively encourage cooperation.
The OSS community is more than willing to just get along, but all parties have to be willing.
I think you could also make the case that there are a number of OSS proponents who actively discourage cooperation because of their own agendas.
BTW, I couldn't agree more about Irfanview. It was indispensible for my Master's thesis research.
One can only develop critical thinking skills by evaluating the arguments why something is or is not acceptable.
I couldn't agree more. After receiving a master's degree, I believe I have learned to think fairly critically. However, when I look back to high school and college, I didn't even come close to critical thinking until late in my B.S. days. The vast majority of my public schooling was fact memorization.
Even if the public schools were teaching critical thinking skills, I'm not sure it would matter. Many ideas are accepted in public school without critical thought so as not to offend anybody.
Please note: I was not homeschooled. In fact, both my parents were teachers until they retired.
Not true. You can allow your children to learn about things you find unacceptable without implying that you find it acceptable. For example, my parents are devout Christians, yet encouraged me to learn about other faiths and to develop friendships with their adherents.
Google has reduced the price of its IPO to between $85 and $95 per share from $108 to $135 per share.
This is a dutch auction. Google is not setting the price. The price they mention is simply an estimate of what they expect the final offering price to be.
However, this is not a very good example. Which words do you have a problem with? The only subjective word is dirty.
When you complain about tiny things like this, it makes it easier for people to ignore the complaints about the big things. Also, please name one media outlet that doesn't put a slant in their headlines. Surely not the LA Times or NY Times.
In a reasonable privacy climate, phone companies should definitely be busted for this... but with Ashcroft et al. in charge, it is more likely that SMS retention becomes law rather than a punishable act.
Something like this never has been a punishable act. Your comparison to FedEx is inane. The simple act of transmitting it means that multiple copies are generated all over the place. A better comparison would be calling somebody on the telephone and leaving a message for them when they are not home. You have no idea what happens to that sticky or who might happen to see it. Plus, the person who wrote the message down for you certainly is not obligated to destroy it or face criminal charges.
The "wise man" thing was supposed to be a joke. Perhaps it was lame, but I don't do stand-up for a living.
so I do evangelize Free Software sometimes. What's wrong with that?
Nothing. I just don't understand why people care so much. It's like the PC vs Mac crap.

I've developed both.
I'm not a disciple of either.
They both have their place.
As a wise man once said, can't we all just get along?
Of course, since there is no global economy, there will be no cancer fighting drugs either.
That'll show 'em!
America produces a HUGE amount of goods. So much so that the U.S. is the #1 exporter in the world.
That's right. I'm a troll. Too bad.

We homeschool. Our kids get LOTS of interaction. At co-ops, at gymnastics lessons, at music lessons, etc.
We are not afraid of the world. We travel internationally once in a while and throughout the US several times a year.
What else ya got?
If a movie wins lots of awards, it must be good. So which awards did Clerks win?
That's what I get for having an unpopular opinion on slashdot. Oh well, karma is cheap. I'll just post a few links to mirrors and I'll be okay.
Don't cry for me.
but this movie ranks as one of the most boring movies ever. Right up there with Chariots of Fire.
Except that Bush is against fetal stem cell research. This kind of stem cell research is supported by Bush. This case actually helps Bush's argument.
Think of all the free AOL CDs littering our landfills. So how many GOP DVDs is it going to take?
Do you honestly think you could drain the coffers of either major party?
It's only those of us in the center that are open to anything. And I do mean "anything". wink wink.

both Bush and Kerry
You might want to think about a new hobby if doing either of those strains your time or patience.

Don't you wish you could force Rush Limbaugh and Michael Moore to fight each other in Thunderdome!
Because $66,666 is squat.

Except that when the time comes, these gadgets will get streaming broadcasts via WiFi.
That tax break happened in 1996 under our previous president, but you're right it is asinine.
