    Dude, not everything is a desktop.

    We built a box that had a requirement to survive a 5-foot drop onto concrete (nonoperating) and a 3-foot drop operating. And we used rotating media.

    Try that with your $150 hard drive.

    I remember the hue and cry when Deja announced that they were dropping the pre-95 stuff. Is there an archive of the stuff from the late 80's to 95 available, and if so, what do you think the odds of Google acquiring such data are?

    III was worth seeing, for the final scenes on Vulcan if nothing else.


    STIII is probably the most underrated Trek film. All of the actors put in excellent performances, and Nimoy deserves extra credit for the performance he pulled out of Shatner.

    Don't know much about 802.11, but all other things being equal, AT&T has a 2GHz cordless system that lets you add more handsets to a single base station, giving you multiple cordless handsets with only one base station. The default package is 2 handsets, and I think it supports up to 4.

    A friend of mine got one, and I also saw them at Costco.

    Does this mean that folks use the program who don't have the security clearance to see the code?

    Actually, that's quite common. Do you think that the DoD vets *every* soldier in the field for SECRET/TOPSECRET clearance? Yet many of the systems they use have classified algorithms in them.

    When your mobile artillery piece relies on one technology to pick up the flashes of fire from your opponent's gun, and GPS to say "I know I'm here. I know the enemy's gun is there. If I point my gun in this direction and fire now, the enemy's gun goes bye-bye before he gets a second shot at me", you can win the war with a fraction of the manpower (and firepower) you used to need.

    US Artillery doctrine uses human beings as forward observers to direct fire. yes it helps to know where you are (you need to counter coriolis force), but FR GRID (map grid coords) mission are generally not as common as FR POLAR (polar coords - fire bearing 325 range 10000 meters) or FR LASER (same thing, but using a laser rangefinder), so knowing where you are exactly isn't quite as necessary.

    If AltaVista's crawler does things different, like using HTTP instead of FTP, or crawling without first knowing the fqdn of the well-known public servers, then they're not infringing (much).

    But then they still fail the obviousness test. Since ARCHIE was out there indexing the FTP sites, it would be obvious to a skilled practicioner of the art how to index HTTP.

    At least they got Ray Charles to sing "America the Beautiful". Gotta love the way Ray sings it!

    The Yahoo case, where a US corporation, under a US domain name, with facilities in the US, breaking no US law is ordered to comply with French law or face penalties?

    <COMMENTARY>Any questions in the remainder of this post are rhetorical, and not part of the interview.

    If a French court can force Yahoo to comply with French law on Nazi memorabilia, what is to stop an equally clueless French court from forcing Yahoo to comply with French laws concerning French Language content? (oops! I gave them the idea) Now that France has set the prececent, what happens if a Saudi Arabian court issues an order for a French site, based in France, violating no French law, to obey comply with Saudi Arabian laws on say... oh, nudity? Perhaps the French Court should look at what happens when things are turned around?

    Sorry, dude, but the THAAD and other interceptor failures have been pretty public. The specific data from these failures may be classified or restricted, but the engineers who need it get it (and they don't work directly for DoD, but for contractors).
