but mplayer has requested the source code and kiss did not respond. What else would you do when someone is using GPL'd software and not providing the source? Tell the community. That's what mplayer did and we should applaud them for it. I have a feeling that we'll see similar cases in the future.
Did you not read the mplayer article? They have already asked for the source code and kiss failed to reply. That is the reason they are disclosing this information.
Indeed- they are a rabid lot. But look at how the crowds turn out for a Mac OS release. Then, look at the crowds you see when a Windows release comes. There's no comparison- Mac users are happy with their OS and WANT to see what's new. It's amazing when users love the software they work with.
Heh, look at the lines when Mandrake and RedHat make new release- queues for bandwidth are crazy, and there's always people cutting in line:-D.
I agree with you completely. I'm second place for my age in the state of Alabama (not saying much, eh?), and I was beaten in a tournament- by a girl. At first I felt bad, but hey, she's good! I came back and drew her the next tourney, and neither of us have been able to completely stomp the other since.
As for man vs. machine, where's the fun? I like playing chess, but against an opponent that does make a mistake every once in a while!
Then why is it in my regular conversations? I don't have to be direct-connected to see that another user is typing. It's been this way for users of Win98se+ and Gaim for months.
"Microsoft has also made moves to get into the corporate market with its new Office Live Communications Server 2003, which will allow companies to run their own enterprise IM network."
This looks interesting- the MSN messenger is already messed up beyond repair. What kind of consumer in their right mind would pay for software people no longer use anyway? If someone wants their own IM network, why not use Jabber?
Sorry, but you'll have a bit of trouble- this is only the source code. You compile it for 8 hours and then you have a game engine on your computer! Yay! Now what? Nothing. You need the pak files, models, levels, textures, sprites, etc. to actually play the game. Sorry, but it looks like you'll still have to go out, buy the game, rip the textures, find where the cd-key is stored, insert your cd key into a hashed formed into your half-life directory, and make sure everything's extracted to the correct directories. Then and only then will you be able to use this source leak to play anything, and trust me- it's a lot easier to just buy the game and have the default installer go through all this mess for you;).
Why would you need to compile kde twice in a week? A simple 'ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge kde' will get you your wonderful kde 3.1.3. Note that 3.1.3 has a nasty scrollbar bug in konqueror, so you might actually want to wait for 3.1.4:). 3.1.3 is mainly only cosmetic facelifts and small bugfixes, I haven't seen much new functionality compared with 3.1.2.
Wow, I agree completely with all of that! And Gentoo users are quite active in spreading the word about how neat and customizeable Gentoo is. I agree, it is getting kinda out of hand. As for "not recommending Gentoo to most users," most people around here don't use Linux, and I start them out on Mandrake. To tell you the truth, I'm happy with any up to date distro and some light wm so I can get my programs and debugging done. Gentoo's customizeable and I can set it to do whatever I want, which is why I've recently started using (was redhat $ mandrake user). It's easier for me. Thanks for you comments- I find them truthfull and informative!
Hey, I enjoyed your post and agree with it. Most compile flags do nothing; the main things that matter are the cpu speed and disk i/o. I've said that before.
Also, I don't recomend Gentoo for most users- I am not a fanatic, I just like configuring things myself so when something messes up, there's only one person to blame (go slackware!).
What you should note is that there ARE performance gains, though slight. I use gentoo because I like editing the code then building it specifically for my system. I didn't know there were this many gentoo-haters out there, but I definitely see only good things from this distribution. No need to bash it nor me. That's getting a little childish.
What I was saying was Gentoo is definitely a distribution to try for new and intermediate users to get to know how their system works and what can be done (e.x.- what services are unneeded) to speed it up. Gentoo is a great learning distribution and very easy to keep up to date- and that is a fact (hey, all you people are talking about now is "This Gentoy can here all the facts you can throw him and not move."). Other distributions are just as good, I just don't see the point in flaming a distribution that is equivalent to the others that's easier for advanced users to edit.
yeah, actually I did, but the results are lengthy and boring. I just say that a simple O3 and arch=(cpu) do make a big difference.
I love working with source code, too. Many of my programs have custom parts in them, and I also write my own. I agree wholeheartedly with all that you said.
I know I use it for the speed gain, and to say that compiling your own packages doesn't matter is absurd! If you know how to and properly configure your compiling flags, the speed gains are tremendous.
I also agree completely that disk i/o and fs type are the determining factors for many tests, so I agree with the statements of programs running at the same speed while writting from or reading to disks, but if you just try gentoo, the learning experience and speed gains are very noticeable.
The compiling was done the same for the kernel, but the packages weren't. The precompiled packaged binaries of the other 2 are not the same as the compiled package on the gentoo system.
That having been said, compiling with arch=p4 and O3 will give you much better results than the biased test would have you believe.
"no, gore won!"
"no, bush won!"
etc. etc.
babies, this is getting nowhere fast! Bush WON, maybe not the popular vote, but the electoral vote. That's what counts and that's what keeps power in check. Now, ya'll babies just stop ya'll's gruge match and get your mommies to change your diapers.
Bush won, end of story, whether you like it or not.
Furthermore, what would you consider democratic? One state ruling a nation? Submit that to our nation's leaders- to our nation's PEOPLE- and see how that flies. I thank God that Bush is in office and not Gore. It's hard to fathom how Al would have handled the last few years. Maybe, Bush was placed in office by devine intervention? Though I don't think this is relevant to the discussion of how democratic our democracy is, it is something appeasing to think about.
This makes me sick. Think about what ya'll are saying. Just because more people voted for him overall doesn't mean he should be president. If this were so, California would have most of the power of the US. To use an improbable example, if a presidential candidate wanted to have California and a few other large states not pay taxes, and then those states elected him, then only the larger states would have power to elect. A system is in place where a candidate gets a certain number of points for each state.
THIS MAKES SURE THAT NO STATE GETS TOO MUCH POWER!!!
This part of our law is very ingenious. Maybe if you kept an open mind and read into it, you would understand that there's more than just the majority of the people, and for good reason.
Yes. I think most of the 2.2 series is also vulnerable.

Now to wait for the torrents... or would the RIAA consider that illegal file sharing?

I repeat. I agree wholeheartedly with what you said.
...kids today, they can't do drugs right anymore- they have to go and do that stupid stuff that'll mess them up for life.

wait, "computers go into the dumpster..."?
SEND THEM TO ME! I know I could use them!

because it equalizes power between the states? Oh, someone hasn't done their research...
