I have visited the store a few times in the South Coast Plaza(CA.). In my opinion these stores really lack the "added value" that a branded Sony store should give. The Sony products, while very cool, don't lend themselves to the integration and "wow factor" that you get being in an Apple store and seeing cool features implemented. Also, the staff there is your basic run of the mill Circut City type employee (not particularly energized or informed). There is not much difference in the presentation at the store vs. a nice consumer electronics shop and I don't feel like I am having a unique "Sony" experience by being in the Sony store because the products are not being presented in a new way.
While apple has a real motivation to open these botuiques (informed sales people and proper product presentation) I dont really see the long term breakout potential for Sony. They already have the benefit of ubiquity.
Having said that, its a great store to kill time in while your wife is shopping!
Interlacing does not double lines. It is just a process that brings the lines up in an alternating (odd/even) sequence. This is now being joined by progressive scan which brings the lines on in order from top to bottom.
Progressive or interlaced, can each scale in lines of resolution to HiDef. 1080i and 720p respectively. (i=interlaced p=progressive)
Point taken. I guess I was thinking of the entertainment division (content). Also, while Sony makes many lame choices (ATRAC), the don't seem to be motivated by their compulsion to run _everything_. It could be argued that ATRAC is a "solution" to an interal political stuggle with the music division.
I keep hoping that science and tech related programming will catch on so that I can work on it. (At the moment I edit network reality TV). PBS does not do enough programming (and has little money) TechTv never really matured, then died an early death. Discovery and its TLC relatives get interesting but ultimately service a very broad viwership.
I want my NicheTV! Give me "/. tv" or "The 2600Club"
I am suprised to read the angry comments about how this book shouldn't be reviewed here or how your boss is going to read it and "no wonder why we're all getting outsourced"....the sky is falling and we are all going to hell.
I understand you guys are hard core. That's what is great about/. but ease up on the fundamentalism. Make room for those bringing up the rear or those trying to join in. You were all learning once too.
I am, by Slashdot standards, a newbie. I only understand 30-50% of the article topics discussed here. I lurk in the forums piecing together concepts with the help of the insightful and funny comments posted by all of you. This book sounds like a great tool for me to further develop an understanding about networking basics.
You champion open standards..how about being open people..
Thanks for posting this review. I will definitely order the book.
We did that here..or tried.
I work in a post house with 8 edit suites and a mixing stage. We ordered one last year.
I sounded like an F16 taking off on an aircraft carrier.
Of course we had no idea what we were ordering and thought we could baffle the sound.
My boss made me send it back after two days.
Technology is making it harder for us to benefit for the anonymity that we currently enjoy. Eventually it will be like we all live in a small town where _everyone_ knows your business. It is, at the moment, the biggest downside of my otherwise beautiful romance with information and technology.
Personally I feel for you buddy, my credit sucks! (But I am a good employee)

Am I the only one who felt _really_ really_ old when I read that. What have I done with the last 30 years of my life?

having said that, good point.
think about how exciting this would be if you replace the word Microsoft in that article with any number of other companies..Sony, Apple, Viacom.
While no corporation is altrusitic, I wouldn't immediately jump to the "how are they going to screw me on this one" conclusion.
Sad state of affairs.
I'm suprised you forgot to mention the Taurus Theorum when citing Tyson.

I think people will look at your post and think "oooh math!" and continue mod you informative. Hacking human nature.
I wish there was a /.TV channel so that this would play out in a 60minutes style camera ambush on this guy.
We have seen the forum equivalent of that ambush but it is just not the same as watching this guy squirm as he is caught in his many lies.
