  2. Re:Take out loans so you have money in the bank?! on Investing Tips for College Students? · · Score: 1

I'm gonna have to disagree with the order of your things here. 1 and 2 should be reversed, or perhaps overlap significantly. If you pay off your debt and live check to check, what happens if you lose your job. That financial advice has just landed you in a nasty position.

ALWAYS pay yourself first. The debt collector will get his AFTER you.

If you are in a hole and trying to dig yourself out, it's a lot smarter to hedge your bets against unforseen events like loss of job, medical problems or having to pay insurance deductibles than it is to live check to check to minimize the amount you pay in interest.

So put 100% of your "extra" money into your emergency fund until you have one month of living expenses saved. Then change that to 75% and put the other 25% to debt until you have two months. At three months, 50% and 50%. That's a much smarter move, even if it cost you a few dollars in the short term.

That's not universally true. Are you familiar with the term arbitrage? If you can get enough guaranteed ROI to cover the loan interest as well as inflation (seems most posters forget that), then it can be a good financial decision to keep the loan.

This is the reason why many people are successfully taking out 0% balance transfers from their credit cards and storing the money in high-yield accounts.

  7. Re:Yes. on Canada Moves to Keep Skilled Workers · · Score: 1

You may be able to enter the country and look for work, but you still have to leave the country if you don't find it before you reach the 3 month mark. You could stay for up to 6, but it requires a little more legwork up front. The only "qualification" is being an American citizen. Having a degree and such is only useful if you are trying to immigrate under the "skilled worker" category. It has nothing to do with obtaining a work permit.

So I'm not sure how that really differs from a Canadian entering the US looking for work. Either way, you'll have to get a company to sponsor your work permit and work on the requirements for residency/green card.

Although if you have more information supporting your claim, I'd be interested in seeing it. I've read the Canadian immigration website and don't see anything on there that makes me think just moving up there unemployed is somehow "open".

Great points, and even still, you left off some things. For instance, my employment includes a discounted gym membership, a monthly transit card (about $50), a 4% matching to my 401k and disability insurance. Those are things I would lose (and that I like) if I went out on my own.

Your costs as a consultant should factor in the fringe benefits you might get from a full time position.

No, the administrator should be able to do anything, even corrupt the system. Running as administrator is you deciding you know best and want full control. If you aren't sure what you're doing, you should be running as a restricted user.

Radio is still very viable in metropolitan areas with large commute times. Being a resident of such an area with an average commute of 45min to and from work everyday, I want to listen to stations talking about local things.

Granted, there are times when I just wanna hear music, but I also enjoy radio programs that are clearly tailored to people in my area.

While I admire the work done on the Zen site that was linked, and the others, I'm still waiting to see a site that does more than show a few images and a blurb.

I'm not that familiar with CSS, but I'd like to see some examples of pages that have actual user interaction widges - buttons, drop down lists, editable datagrids.

The examples I've seen linked in this thread are nothing more than glorified text documents. But the WWW has progressed a little past sites of that simplicity.

How does CSS handle complex sites?
