  1. Simple Answer: Monetize peoples Attention on A Working Economy Without DRM? · · Score: 2

How do you create a market for a product, and make money of a product that has a huge initial creative investment, but then no manufacturing cost, and is in infinite supply

Simple: Just monetize peoples attention instead of trying to monetize the media.

  2. The economics of attention on A Working Economy Without DRM? · · Score: 1

Ecomonics is primarily a funcion of supply and demand. Media duplication and distribution, in the old economy of some media, limits supply. This is incompatible to an open system. It was also not effective for television and radio - nevertheless, these businesses have been successfull by monetizing the limited supply of attention of people who are focused on the media. This seems like a natural place to focus on economic models for media free from the artificial systems to restrict supply, like digital restrictions management.

  3. FSF's Defective By Design on RMS Calls to Liberate Cyberspace · · Score: 5, Informative

The FSF has recently launched the Defective by Design campaign. This campaign is an initiative to provide activism opportunities for free software activists and is 'new territory' for the FSF. In the last 30 days, DefectiveByDesign has received press in Reuters, Financial Times, BusinessWeek, US News and World Report, BBC and over 40 publications in the tech space. The project was launched in response to the most recent FSF members meeting earlier this year, where many FSF members discussed ideas about bringing the fight for free software into the mainstream.

  4. Re:Web services? on First Draft of GPL Version 3 Released · · Score: 1

Web services are not covered directly in the license, but are now made compatible through subsection 7d. If this draft is adopted, the AGPL will be compatible with the GPL, and those authors who wish derivatives to remain free will be able to secure that freedom through the use of other licenses like the AGPL (which has been endorsed by the FSF).

Under subsection 7d, the added part may require the program to contain functioning facilities that allow users to obtain copies of the program's Complete Corresponding Source Code. This is intended to enable compatibility with licensing terms that, for example, require modified versions of a program that interacts with users through a network to preserve an opportunity for users to request network transmission of the source code.

You've got a point, but you haven't done your homework about the tools that are being deployed (and being developed by this crowd). Yes, some are for geeks, but everyone I know is talking metrics. Metrics for effective utilization of volunteer resources, as well as measurable results for fundraising. Advokit, for example, is not a tool for nerds. It was used quite successfully in mobilizing ground operations in many races last fall, many of which won. At the time, it was developed too late in the cycle to be deployed widely for the presidential races, but it is maturing quickly.

The republicans very successfully used Internet based tools to mobilize their volunteers for VoterID and GOTV work - 'boots on the ground' - as you have aptly noted. We heard reports of many precincts where they identified people walking up to the polls to mark them off lists (electronically), so their phone banks wouldn't waste time calling those who had voted.

Functionally, it makes no difference whether the tools are proprietary or free. The exciting thing about what's happening with these campaign technologists (the FOSS group) is that they are overtly transparent now about their work. These groups are working very closely together in a way that is unprecidented in this community. The transparency is reducing the duplication of efforts, and best practices are emerging. The systems didn't work well together in the last cycle, but they are being improved so that they will work well together now.

  6. Kucinich Blog on Election Activism on Diebold Folds In DMCA E-Voting Lawsuit · · Score: 5, Interesting

This is from the Kucinich Blog from June 20, 2003. Americans have become very sensitized to manipulation of the vote since the debacles in the 2000 presidential elections. All over america, people are expressing to me their concerns about honest elections, about election technologies, about the ownership of voting machine suppliers, about the potential for fraud...all of which can undermine our democracy. We need solutions. Here's what we can do: we can organize in every community across this country into citizen groups of individuals with technical expertise in computer programming, systems design, and working knowledge of elections. These precinct activists can begin immediately to create a template for securing the 2004 vote. The elements of such a program might include: taking action to gain access to inspect the technology, to learn what safeguards have been put in place to make sure that no coflicts of interests are involved, and to make sure there are no problems with the chain of custody. What I'm advocating is monitoring the vote. Maybe we should call it MTV2004...Monitor the vote 2004. Perhaps we could begin to post our ideas to the wiki www.civicactions.org. We will need to organize state by state or county by county. If anyone has any ideas, please go to the wiki and let's act collectively to ensure a fair election in 2004. Just last week, he blasted the FBI for stripping away the constitution. All from a man who 25 years ago, on Dec 25, 1978, refused to sell Clevelands municipal electric company under threat of political death. He stood by his principles and sacrificed his career. After a few years and hundreds of millions in savings, the people brought him back. If there is ever a candidate for president who supports rights of netizens, and "we the people", this is him. Not this candidate and not this assistant. The candidate wants to reform our system and he's in need of decent, cheap, technical advice. It's expensive to hire consultants and advice is much better on slashdot anyway. We're looking for real advice so if you've got it, then give it.
