Useful Devices for Audio Weblogging?
Henri Poole asks: "I'm advising the Kucinich Presidential campaign on technology and we are looking for an audio webblogging solution. Kucinich's assistant plans to log his own travels and would prefer to do so via voice. We're looking for a device with the following functionality: phone, web, email, audio, and calendar. Verizon is the preferred (but not essential) service and they are advising that we buy Samsung or Kyocera equipment. We'd prefer a free software solution...any sage advice?"
I'll bet 50 gil that the first application for audio weblogs will be a fart diary. I'd honor the bet, too, if I could link my PlayStation memory card to PayPal...

You've got to be kidding me.
Yoda of Borg am I! Assimilated shall you be! Futile resistance is, hmm?
First, get a microphone. Then get a laptop with a wireless card. One of those really small laptops from japan would work well. http://www.dynamism.com. Then, just record your audio, type your text and upload by finding a wireless network. What else could you possibly need?
The GeekNights podcast is going strong. Listen!

Sure, here's some advice. When coming to a geek forum and asking them to solve your problems for you, at the very least you shouldn't confuse "equipment" with "software". "Samsung or Kyocera equipment" refers to hardware. Don't come here asking for a "free software solution" alternative to "Samsung or Kyocera equipment".
VoiceMonkey is a new service that lets you do voice logs. Right now it's in beta, so it's free. You call a toll-free number and it records your message as an mp3, which is immediately available online. If you have an existing journal through Blogger, Livejournal, or a host of other services, it can post to them automatically.
I think you should find out whether this assistant actually has a clue what a weblog is, and report back to us. Does he/she imagine that there are people who actually will want to listen to this stuff? Or is there another agenda -- maybe the assistant wants to take voice notes for the purpose of later writing a book? If that is the case, just use a private voicemail box with a large storage allocation.
Another way would be an audio recorder (Archos) or even a small tape recorder, a line in jack on a sound card, and a few perl scripts to upload the newest recordings to a web site. Almost any geek should be able to slap this together.
An audio blog does have the cool factor of being a new thing, but the problem is listening to audio is so linear, it consumes human time to a much greater degree than text. There are no shortcuts with audio (short of tricks that are unlikely to materialize just yet in your particular weblog). I would have the same problem with a video weblog.

How about using this opportunity to take a stand against wasteful spending and extole the virtues of thriftyness by using good old pencil and paper to log the travels instead of some costly gizmo? Sure, you don't get the voice but, seriously, is that really worth the extra bucks? What's the voice component of the weblog going to get you?
Do the common men and women who gave money to your campaign know that you waste money on unnecessary trinkets like this? I'd suggest you and your associates buckle down and think about how to beat GWB -- who has a sky-high approval rating and shitloads of campaign funds -- rather than wasting time finding cutsy ways of weblogging.
1. republicans evil
2. i am a true liberal
3. tax the rich people making $40,000 to $75,000, errr...I mean tax the rich.
Face it, if you make $40k to $75k you pay higher tax rates than do people making $1,000,000 or more.
Include medicare and social security in your calculations to get a tax rate of 33% on those 'rich' fireman, peace officers, school teachers, plumbers, electricians...
Hey wait, those are all union memembers and should be helped by Democrats...
1. Ask on slashdot.
Marxist evolution is just N generations away!
It's weblogging, not webblogging. Thank you, have a good day.
The assistant was tasked to make the candidate more visible on the web. The assistant got the candidate on Slashdot.

Not this candidate and not this assistant. The candidate wants to reform our system and he's in need of decent, cheap, technical advice. It's expensive to hire consultants and advice is much better on slashdot anyway. We're looking for real advice so if you've got it, then give it.
secondly, shouldnt you be focusing on his platform? why should i vote for him over candidate X? because he audio webblogs?
then, who is actually going to listen to his audiologs? not me. although his plee for gay marriages would im sure make for some good 'out of context' soundbites.
lastly, how the FSCK did this get on slashdot? are we a turnkey consultancy? cant he pay someone to keep up his air of tech savvery? i mean pay someone that knows their shit and dosent go straight to ask /.
just my 2 cents.
I want 2D games back.

You could get a tape recorder and a few tapes.
How are you going to keep them down on the farm once they've seen Karl Hungus?
with a limited number of "public patents." A few things that he admitts everyone needs to be able to do will have a special public agency protect them by filing a "public patent." The concept of being able to make something unless it is patented is gone if he is elected.
I'd like to see him explain that in an audio weblog.
I've got the latest (7135). Had the last version too (6035). They rock. Buy spare batteries and the stereo headset right out of the gate.

The assistant was tasked to
No, he wasn't - because TASK IS NOT A VERB. Since "task" is a noun, it has no past tense. A task is something you do.
Task is a noun. The assistant was assigned the task of making the candidate more visible.
Palm's Tungsten T can obviously handle the calendar aspect, but when used in conjunction with a bluetooth-enabled cell phone it can browse the web and use email. The Tungsten T also has a built-in voice recorder that can be used for audio. When you sync the Tungsten, the audio files could be transfered to a computer and placed on the blog with a simple script.
So all you need is a Tungsgten T and a Sony T68i. Wow, that was a difficult question.
A task is something you do. ...

Google for audioblog and use a phone.

Well try this.
1. buy a micro cassette recorder or tapeless digital recoder. The device must have a line-out jack. $40 max.
2. buy a 1/8 male to 1/8 male stereo cable at Radio Shack. S/B $2 to $3
3. download Audacity from www.freshmeat.net $0
4. install cable to mic in jack on laptop or desktop sound ports.
5. Plug other end of cable to line out of recorder
6. install and run software.
7. press record button of Audacity and play button on recorder to record.
8. Finally save as MP3 or Org format.
That's it.
You might have a look at Sony's voice recorders. Some of these record audio on exchangable memory sticks or built-in memory chips. You then download this audio to your computer via (typically) USB, and can also use Dragon software for voice to text translation. Should be perfect for the intended use.
As an example, check out Sony ICD-ST10VTP, which records more than 5 hours of sound. Should the link not work, try Sony's website, Electronics/Portable Audio/Voice Recorders/Digital Voice.
Note: I have not used any of these devices yet, but probably will.
Also, as a remark to a previous comment, I think the question is as relevant to Slashdot as many others are, and flaming him for asking is not only impolite, it's stupid. The political views of his employer are also beside the point. Furthermore, to paraphrase Spock, only american arrogance would lead to the assumption that the politician in question must be a republican or a democrat. He might of course be something else (in which case he will lose, but most likely he will anyway, which is also beside the point!)
