  1. Re:Warranty? on Philips Releases 100W-Equivalent LED Bulb, Runs On Just 23 Watts · · Score: 2

In ideal circumstances, CFLs can last a very long time. But they also seem to be a lot more sensitive to power fluctuations, bad wiring, temperature, being turned on and off a lot, etc. I still remember that the first CFLs were specifically for locations where they wouldn't be turned off and on a lot. Best for rooms that are lit constantly. Not so good for toilets and garages, for example.

I also have one fixture in my house where CFLs don't work at all, for some mysterious reason. Incandescents and LEDs work fine, though.

My layman's impression of LEDs is that they are every bit as tolerant of various fluctuations and being turned on and off a lot as incandescents are. LEDs were originally used for blinkenlights in modems and other places where they blink rapidly, so that certainly can't be an issue. The fact that they work fine in my one weird fixture is also a good sign.

I have a lot more faith in LEDs than in CFLs. CFLs seem to be just transitionary tech, because for a long time LEDs were nowhere near ready, while incandescents really are too wasteful for many applications (like rooms where the lights are constantly on). But in the future, everything will be LED.

I believe Netherland also lost a bid for the Olympics a few years ago (or do we still need to lose that one?) In a way I think it would have been interesting if we did host the Olympics again. I suspect the year would be filled with parliamentary questions about it, and there'd be lots of civil disobedience concerning the IOC's draconic rules. It could become a fun disaster.

    I think we agree.

I'm not entirely sure what the US Dept. of Education does wrong, but in general I agree that government needs to be decentralized and as close to the people as possible. There are many things for which national or even global agreements are necessary, but these should involve representation from lower levels, and not simple be forced from on-high. A bottom-up instead of a top-down approach.

But the end result is still that you need a government (both at more empowered local levels and at higher levels) that represents the people. The US is currently in a deadlock that prevents that.

  11. Re:You only had to listen on CISPA Sponsor Says Protests Are Mere 'Turbulence' · · Score: 1

Even so, if you want freedom, you shouldn't just whitle down the government. That would leave the corporations unchecked and in a position to take more control. You some kind of collective of the people, basically a government, to keep them in check and protect the freedom of the people. If you want to tear down the government completely, you also need to tear down the corporations. Otherwise you end up with less freedom instead of more.

I fully agree that a government is a dangerous thing, and in an ideal world, you'd have as little of it as possible. But in a world dominated by corporations, you need something to balance them out. Reducing what little influence the people have, is not going to give them more freedom. That's why you need to take back control of the government. The situation is out of balance. You first need to bring that balance back. Throwing away your tools is not going to help you.

Charming quote. But the government has no special claim on competence or honor. The people who work for it are no more your friends than the giant corporations.

And that is the problem that needs to be fixed. Doing away with government altogether because the one you voted for is bad, will just result in a power vacuum that will be filled by a government that you didn't vote for.

Vote for a government that is your friend. That's what you need to be doing.

Not entirely true. Germany would still have lost, but the post-war political landscape would have looked very differently. Russia would control all of Germany and not just the east part. I'm pretty certain that one of the real reasons for D-Day wasn't just to defeat Germany, or help Stalin defeat Germany, but to make sure Stalin wasn't the only one to defeat Germany. The western allies needed to be there to not owe gratitude and allegiance to Russia. The US needed to be there to show it was top dog.
