  1. Maybe there's a place for both on New Color E-Reader Tech To Challenge E-Ink Dominance · · Score: 1

I think there is a market for both the PixelQi type screen, as well as traditional e-Ink. The PixelQi type screen can mimic e-Ink for reading length text, but can also revert to a normal looking screen for other stuff. It'll be great on netbooks and tablets for general purpose computing. However, there are many that just want an eReader without anything else. That's where e-Ink does really well.

I find it a little hard to believe that the screens can consume less power than e-Ink, but if they consume less power than existing LCDs I say, awesome! Because that's who the PixelQi et. al. are competing with; existing LCDs (and each other I suppose). But I don't think they really apply to the e-Ink, eReader department. People that enjoy reading will likely still buy kindles, regardless of what new LCD tech is developed.

There's something to be said for simplicity. Personally, I want an all-in-one device so I don't have so many gadgets to forget on the train. But that's just me. I was never interested in a Kindle in the first place, and don't understand the obsession with them. Maybe it's because Kindles don't smell like books. There's something enchanting about the smell of an old book while you're reading it...

Ahem, I bought the 1st gen iphone on the second day of release and never regretted my purchase. Even when I got the $100 refund, I still considered the original hefty pricetag worth it. At the time, it allowed me to replace two devices (old crappy cellphone and ipod) with one seamless device, AND I had internet anywhere. Plus google maps.

Back in 2007, nothing really compared to the iPhone in terms of overall usability and features. Sure, there were some devices which had more FEATURES if you looked at them in a list-by-list comparison, but none that I cared about. When they added Exchange support it was pretty cool, but I never needed a 3G or 3GS to enjoy that.

In the end, it all depends on what you want out of the device. If the iSlate has a PixelQi screen and functions as an ereader, I am going to buy it for that; all the laptop features that would (supposedly) come along with it would just be an added bonus.

I suppose the challenges would be streaming the data to the ocular implants; I have a feeling bluetooth wouldn't have enough bandwidth to handle the feeds.

  13. Fascination With End of Times on Anti-Technology Themes in James Cameron's Avatar · · Score: 1

I think it has more to do with the fascination about the End of Times. People love seeing movies like Apocalypse Now or 2012. Perhaps it is because we as humans realize that the lives we lead now are superficial and do not allow us to reach the potential that we have within us. Nobody likes being wage-slaves to our feudalistic overlords.

I think, deep inside somewhere, we all yearn for a simpler time when we don't have all the stimulation and complexity technology currently gives us.

In reality, I think this is where technology went wrong: instead of making our lives simpler and easier, it has ended up making them more complex and more stressful for us all! Technology should not be attempting to change our lives for the worse; it should be an aid to help all humanity live better lives. I think we have strayed far from that goal, sadly.

P.S. I have no hatred of technology and love it as much as the next tech geek, but there's a point where you just have to think, "Yes, we may have gone too far..." I think that point comes when you look at the world you live in and see that we are obsessed with death and mayhem on the news, while in the real world, many people suffer and we (as a collective) do nothing to aid their lives.

P.P.S. Throwing money at people does not count.

P.P.P.S. Yes, I do know there are many organizations that go out and help the peoples of the world outside our borders, but the aid I'm talking about is this: Technological discoveries that actually help the people of the rest of the world live better lives, not us. This is where a capitalistic technology system fails. If it's not in our interest to discover better ways to use technology to clear sand dunes and create better irrigation systems in the desert, it just won't happen.
