I've never thought magic = ease of use. The iPhone I have is pretty nice because I have everything I want in a phone in one place when I'm out walking around NYC.

Somehow, I doubt the iPad is going to be the same experience. I'm going to almost always end up going back to my desktop for anything beyond reading books/reading websites.

Honestly, the keyboard on the iTablet looks very painful to use for serious typing, and I'm just going to go to my desktop rather than use an external keyboard for the iTablet.

I'm definitely going to try the iTablet though, maybe I will be pleasantly surprised. I'm not really holding my breath at this point though, it's alot of money to drop on something that would just be a nice to have but not necessary.

My guess is that Apple is betting that they can advance tablet technology far enough to make it indistinguishable from magic. I don't think I'm alone when I say that I feel extremely skeptical of this claim. We'll see when it's released how "magic" it seems.

Personally, I think a magic tablet would be one that is holographic AND can do everything my computer can, plus everything I would like it to do.

A tall order, but that's what you get when you start making claims about magic.

I dunno, I can't really make up my mind either way! There's a certain part of me that likes the freedom of OSS, but there's another part of me that just likes stuff to work.

TBH, I think Linux/OSS really missed the boat on this one, and they're going to be left behind. Sad.

I don't know, I think there's a very large market for an open source tablet. SSH + a nice virtual keyboard would be pretty sweet. It'd be sweet. All it needs is a good touch interface.

First, the FSF needs to convince us average users need to have control. Why should average users have control over their computer? Isn't this what got us the virus nightmare in Windows?

Doesn't migrating to the iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch model mean that social engineering has much less of an impact to the security of a system? I would think this would be a good thing.

I don't think Mac OS X will ever go away from giving you the control it does (and it is quite nice), but Mac OS X is not appropriate on a device like the iPad.

In fact, I would compare the iPad to the upcoming yet-to-be-made Chromium netbook. The vision Google laid out for their device is pretty much exactly the same as Apple's vision of the iPad. Except that Apple is actually _less_ connected in to your device than Google would be.

Sure, this is bad for the FSF, but what alternative vision of computing do they offer?

Attacking Apple's products is one thing. Why not create your own open source tablet to compete, and let the marketplace decide?

Honestly I don't think it's reasonable to expect Apple to release a tablet with a full function OS like they have for their desktops due to the interface, but it still kind of sucks (for now). We'll see if the iPad App developers can pick up the ball and make some applications that make the iPad worth having beyond reading, writing and movie watching.

I own a lot of Apple products and I must say I was very disappointed in this presentation. Two major problems with the iPad will probably keep me from buying one.

    1. LED backlit screen. This seems strange given the existence of PixelQi and mirasol type LCD displays. Not being able to read this outside really makes it useless as an ebook reader. Oh, and also the 10 hours of reading time is simply pathetic for an eReader.

    2. No camera? What happened? This is very disappointing.

I must admit I have, in the past, thought it would be cool to have a large version of my iPhone to view movies in bed or browse the web before going to sleep, but honestly it is not worth the $500 price tag without the 2 features above.

I think I'll just stick with my iPhone, thanks. "Nice-to-haves" do not make product demand.

If the iPad is using a PixelQi screen or something similar, then there won't be backlighting most of the time (it uses ambient lighting and reflective display to enhance the pixels), and there won't be eyestrain. In fact, it is almost exactly the same as eInk, but extremely cheap AND capable of color.

If this catches on, the Kindle won't stand a chance. Sorry.

However, I'm wondering if it may be a problem with the Facebook login system. Perhaps there is something wrong with how they identify a browser who is currently logging in, and they confused handsets on the carrier (since they probably share IPs with other handsets).

More testing needs to be done to determine if this really is an ATT issue, or just a facebook issue. Facebook doesn't exactly have cast-iron, secure code, from my experience.

However, here's a little anecdote of why IE6 will never die:

Company that uses a COTS product that runs ONLY on IE6 and fails to work on any other browser, refuses to upgrade from IE6. 2020 will likely roll around, and they will still be using IE6. This COTS product is irreplaceable and they use it for their core business.

Now, you may think the previous anecdote is laughable and never happens. I can tell you personally, that it is true.

It makes me a sad panda :( Especially when I realize there are so many people still using IE6 in that company that have opened themselves up to huge security breaches just by browsing the web.

Perhaps it will take some huge widespread event (like Operation Aurora) to change the minds of companies that rely on web products that only work in IE6, but I am not so sure. The risks have to outweigh the benefits.
