He was probably referencing the fact that IBM (Big Blue) offers linux solutions. I think he was saying "red" not about redhat, but the fact that Fujitsu is in China (i.e., Red China)
It's amazing that many people automatically assumed the poster was talking about linux distros, as opposed to the companies offering linux solutions.
I've been using it from 9.0 and I've been very happy with the recent releases. 2005LE (10.2) was an incredible improvement over 10.1. Got any specifics on what happened? I've never had a problem with any installs... Did you try ##mandriva or #lfd on irc.freenode.net (in xchat or your favorite irc client)?
I use mandriva and i've been verry happy with 2005LE (The speed improvement over 10.1 is amazing, I wasn't expecting that). It's nice to see a company I've been with go through bankruptcy and then emerge to start bringing together a lot of people who are oriented towards the desktop linux experience.
With all these people coming together, they should come up with something interesting. Who knows if it'll be good or bad, but I'm going to wait and see. I'm a little leery of Lycoris since I've never used it. Their site looks nice and slick at least.
Yeah, Kubuntu is really promising (based off of debian). Also regarding the size of the updates, you can make it really small by using synthesis.hdlist.cz rather than the hdlist.cz. The one you're downloading (hdlist.cz) has all the descriptions for the packages, which does take a long time to download. The synthesis.hdlist.cz is much more sane, and is rarely over a megabyte in size. I only use synthesis.hdlist.cz, since I don't really need descriptions for packages.
Yeah, sorry if I came across as being rash, I really wish I could edit slashdot posts... My title could have been changed. I actually do agree with a lot of what your post said. Windows management isn't as bad as people on slashdot make it out to be.
Anyway, I'm not saying the kernel issue on mandrake/mandriva is easily apparent to ordinary users. At first I was confused too.
I haven't actually done it recently, but AFAIK you can't upgrade the kernel using the GUI tools. I think you might be able to type in the specific package name and get the listing, but that's a PITA.
If you haven't already, install bash-completion from the gui. You'll have to restart your sessions but it makes using urpmi from the commandline a WHOLE lot easier.
Then fire up your favorite terminal (Eterm or konsole or something), and su to root and then type urpmi kernel- and then hit Tab. It'll show you a bunch of potential names (there are a lot). Fill out the one you want (i.e. if just the stock 2.6 kernel, type urpmi kernel-2.6 and hit tab).
I'd also recommend firing up xchat and heading to #lfd or #mandriva on irc.freenode.net... if you have any problems there are friendly people there to help you:)
HTH, and again I'm sorry if I came across as being mean. I'm at work so I'm moving quickly:D
I use mandrake, I have since 9.0. I have _never_ had to compile the kernel from source. You urpmi the source from the command line. The mcc interface will NOT install the kernel automatically. You have to do it manually.
In older distributions, you would simply type urpmi kernel (or whichever of the other kernel's you're using, like enterprise, etc.). In the recent mandriva releases, you have to type urpmi kernel-2.6
Obviously you haven't been using linux often... Where did you get the impression that you "had" to compile it from the source package?
But how many plan on reading AIM conversations their employees are having?
My corp uses AIM for internal communications, and I am really disturbed by this. I'm amazed the local admins have allowed this to go on. Basically all our conversations are going through AOL's servers and the internet, in plain text. And there is ABSOLUTELY no reason for this, since we're all on the local LAN.
I'm planning on setting up a jabber server on the linux box there, but it may be a chore getting employees to switch from AIM to something like gaim or trillian (does trillian support jabber?)
I bought vmware workstation 4.5 because of the free upgrade to 5.0, and because I needed windows for stuff that wine won't do (visual interdev... yeah i know it's crap but my company uses it). Oh yeah and I also run iTunes in it so I can sync up easily with my iPod shuffle.
I love it. It's amazing how fast windows performs on it. I can't say it's at native speed, but it is close. It's also really, really easy to backup. And the snapshot feature is nice, but it's kind of annoying that it restores your _Whole_ hard drive to the previous state. If you have personal data that you're working on, it should probably be on your native drive rather than VMware's virtual disks.
I haven't ever needed to ask for support from vmware... it's a very stable piece of software in my experience.
I know my company uses VMware GSX server on their windows boxes. I'm not sure what for, since I just started working as a sys admin.
I definitely appreciate having a third party there to go to for support. I don't think me or my company would appreciate going to microsoft for support on something like virtualization issues.
Also, ideally this whole "embedded virtualization into the OS" should land Microsoft in antitrust hotwater, but I guess microsoft is the justice department's honey baby now.
As long as Microsoft isn't planning to buy out vmware (*crosses fingers*) I'll be happy to see what they come up with. Who knows, they might come up with a quality product!
I think this is just another form of the In Soviet Russia... troll. I have acrobat 7 here and it loads about 3x as fast as acrobat 5 did. (on linux on a 1ghz laptop).
I'm willing to bet the people saying it loads slow haven't even installed it or run it yet. Either that or they have something seriously wrong with their configuration.
But they REALLY need to work on the audio mastering! The ambient volume levels were noticably different in many of the dialogue clips (some of them were even cut off), which was quite strange. Of course, this might just be a preliminary preview of it, and maybe they're still going to do some more audio processing... I hope?
Looks like a very ambitious project... I'm sure if they do some of the dialogue in studio and have the actors try some of those lines again, it will be much more polished.
The action scenes even look half decent! Great job guys. I'll definitely get the DVD if I don't see it in theatres.
I use gmail via the webclient all the time now, and I really want a calendar to be integrated with it so I can access all my important times/dates/todos in one place anywhere I am, not just at home. My Corp has outlook webmail but I HATE HATE HATE the user interface. Gmail has probably the best interface I've ever used, and if they added a calendar to that...
There's something you gotta know. No one actually "owns" movies anymore. You "rent" them. Yeah. If you break a DVD, scratch it, lose it, or it gets stolen..
Well, you gotta buy a new one.
Also I fail to see how someone would be unable to make a digital copy of a movie if they already have the DVD.
I couldn't ask for a better present. DNA is probably my favorite humorist, (followed closely by Terry Pratchett). I'm really looking forward to this film. This is going to be my birthday party... going to see DNA's imagination on the big screen!
Ah, most of those games I bought before I knew about linux (not world of warcraft though).
I think I generally agree with you, but I see a growing trend for games companies to be more openminded about supporting multiple platforms (I really like what Bioware and the franchise that owns Unreal Tournament have done). I agree Blizzard isn't there yet.
I agree there's a hole in terms of linux support from Blizzard, but using linux isn't going to keep you from enjoying those Blizzard games if you already have them. That might be part of the problem too... Blizzard doesn't need to worry about making linux versions of their games, since they work fine in cedega/wine. I guess all we can hope for is someone at Blizzard to finally decide they should take an multi-platform approach to their game design.
Oh.. Diablo 1 doesn't play, I don't think... But Diablo 2 and the expansion, StarCraft + Expansion, World of Warcraft, warcraft 2 (dunno about the expansion for that), Warcraft 3 + expansion... They all work. I know, because I play them in linux with cedega.
Via Crossover Office 4.1. I use it all the time, it integrates into Firefox and the standalone works great (and it's pretty fast!)
BTW the forums are pretty old there, the best place to look for compatibility is with the advocates.
I'm not sure how well the new quicktime 7.0 will work with crossover office, as I don't have access to the prereleases (I don't think it's been publically released yet).
But it does provide me with the option of using quicktime in linux, which is great. In addition to that, I use mplayerplugin with firefox, and that takes care of pretty much any media format the web throws at me, thanks to plf (I'm on mandrake).
is caused by not having ports 6969 and 6881-6999 forwarded by your router, and open on your firewall.
If you don't have those ports open/forwarded, you're going to see really slow downloads. As long as you have those open, it will take no time to download. I am still a silver club member at mandrake, and I consistently get 400k/s downloads on the torrent downloads. The downloads of the 4 gig PowerPack dvd takes no time at all.
I also seed as much as I download on those torrents. Many others do as well. Unfortunately, you won't be getting uploads from us if you don't have those bittorrent ports open/forwarded on your router.
I had finally decided I wanted to try out World of Warcraft, 'cause I like MMORPGs but have become disenchanted with them in the past (AO, DAoC), so I tried to find one to buy... Not a single store in my area had one. Best buy, circuit city, EB, you name it, they were out. I found one store on gamestop's site listing that said it had 4+ copies of WoW there, and I Was like "Yes!" It was only 20 minutes away, so I drove there and got there 30 mins before closing, and they had about 15 copies of WoW on the shelves... They said they had just gotten a shipment in a few hours ago.
Now, reading this, I wonder if those copies are gone or still on shelf... Maybe I was really lucky.
I can't find my psych textbook, but in psychology class I learned that there is a process where, if you tell a student they have a low intelligence before taking a test, they will actually perform worse than if you had not said anything to them. It's a matter of how preconceptions affect the behavior of the mind. It's dangerous to go around saying women aren't as good at math, because eventually, by repeating that, women will think they're bad at math whether or not they are, which is quite dangerous.
It's what we call a self-fulfilling prophecy. In regards to this topic, perhaps study of the gender differences of academic subjects is important, but I feel it is a good idea to not publicize the findings beyond the scientific/education community, where it could help teachers to help female/male students cope with the subject matter. For more reference on this subject, you can google for psychology self fulfilling prophecy, or go to theselinks.
Just curious, did you mean that AMANDA is a "PITA and not worth getting involved with for a simple user box?" or is mondo/mindi? That was a little unclear...
mondo and backuppc (if you're backing up other machines over the network).
mondo will do a full image of your drives (including making images of ntfs/fat32 drives). You boot off the image you create with mondo, and you can nuke the machine and do a full restore from cd/dvd, or do a partial restore.
backuppc is perl based and works wonders on a network for daily backups. (you can backup the server backuppc is running on too!)
It also depends on what you're working with. I work with html tables since we publish a lot of print publications with education data online, and dreamweaver makes working with html tables a lot easier. I generally never use the WYSIWYG part of dreamweaver, since it's completely worthless, and just switch to source code view most of the time. It's really handy for visualizing stuff and making sure you're not doing anything wrong.
I haven't really found a good OSS replacement for this, but Bluefish does pretty much everything I want, and Quanta has a pretty good preview capabililty (a lot like Homesite which I LOVED but stupid Macromedia bought it). But quanta uses QT which I really don't like too much.
Combine bluefish with a good preview ability and I think I could live without Dreamweaver.
Linux is not invulnerable to exploits, as we all know. Therefore, why are people making such a big deal out of it?
It is important to know about, in my opinion. But that's just so we know we need to patch our kernels. Simply the fact that a root exploit has been found does not mean we should go about reposting the same types of stuff that has been posted endlessly before in similar articles on slashdot.
I prefer linux because it's free. It's also pretty stable and secure, which is nice. But I just like linux for what it is. I fear we are getting sidetracked in the "my OS has less exploits then yours, nanananaaaaa" childish type of fights.
I look forward to the updated kernel which will fix this issue for my distribution. Until then, I'm going to do some much needed maintenance on my box and barricade my room so no one but me can get in.... just kidding.
It's amazing that many people automatically assumed the poster was talking about linux distros, as opposed to the companies offering linux solutions.

Marvin is cute and depressed. Depressed about being cute... because he was thought up by a markedroid. That's pretty f'n hilarious to me :)
Pretty sad too :/ I gotta feel sorry for the little guy.
I'm willing to bet the people saying it loads slow haven't even installed it or run it yet. Either that or they have something seriously wrong with their configuration.
You avoid the litigation issue of foreign countries at any rate.
