  1. Re:So True on If Not America, Then Where? · · Score: 1

Mexico corruption is really bad, I lived in Mexico for 29 years and now I live in USA working hard so I can apply for residence. I'm glad to live in the US, with the recent events in Mexico City with all the political battle and Lopez Obrador causing major problems to the city. I really miss my family, culture, and a bunch of things. It has been hard to adapt to US culture but quality of life is a lot better.

As a kid you learn that when the police stops you for speeding you give them 50.00 pesos and they will let you go, that is what we see everyday, of course when you are older you do the same, unless you study an re-evaluate your principles you stop doing that kind of things. Now I understand why police men are so corrupt, they have to pay for the car tires, bullets, uniforms, and some other stuff, with the money that the city pays they can't afford that and support their families. Some years ago the city paid a ridiculous amount of money to Rudy Giuliani to give some advice so solve the increasing crimes in the city, on of the first suggestions was to pay a decent salary to the police men.

The only solution to the corruption in Mexico is education so future generations learn not to bribe public workers, but that will take a long time and a lot of money.

I think Mexico could use a lot better the relation with the US and the closeness, why so many IT firms outsource projects to India, if the government, universities and businesses invest more on IT staff and teach English to their employees a lot of the outsourcing could go to Mexico, easier for managers to go to Mexico to see the progress, similar time zone, easier to flight people, etc. Now it's too late, India has done a really good job.

I think Mexico is wasting some opportunities, the government should gice incentives to some big transnational companies to open research centers, and not just sell products, that leaves nothing in the long term. That will help a lot to universities and in the long term to make our own technology instead of just manufacturing, that is good for now but at any time they could move to other place.

If I could get a decent job outside the major cities, and that place had a decent infrastructure I would go back to Mexico, but I don't think that is going to happen any time soon.

If you want to live in one of the most exiting dynamic cities in the world go there, people are usually nice.

I still can't understand all the ad biz, I really don't pay much attention to 99.99% of the ads. Really, are all those companies paying for those ads getting a benefit from them?

Even on TV it has been years that I pay attention to an ad, usually I will switch channels or fast forward. On the internet I just block those sections of the page, and just read the article or the forum.

How much money is being spent on advertising, that money could be used on making things cheaper for consumers, or just donate all that money to other countries and then they will have a bigger market to sell their products.

I'll be really interested in reading some study about the efficiency and success of all those ads, I bet some are really good, but 99% of them I think is a waste of money, just like e-mail SPAM, and regular spam in your mailbox at home. I don't know anyone that doesn't throw that to the trash without reading. We could be saving some trees.

Stop the ads and make something useful with that money.

  4. Re:cost of living. on Where the Highest Paying Tech Jobs Are · · Score: 1

I think Mexico is a great place, when you don't have to live in Mexico City. I lived in Mexico City all my life until I was transferred to Florida few years ago. Mexico City is getting really expensive, polluted and if you go there you will know what traffic is, and not just rush hour like in the US.

I lived about 10 miles from my work and the last time I went to see my family it took me 1 hour to get to old office. Yes, you could ride the public transport system, that sucks, the only good one is the subway (Metro) but you can't get to a lot of places just using the subway. Also you can't use the public system carrying around your laptop or anything that is worth more than 50 USD, it is highly probable that you will get robbed. Bicycle, forget it nobody will respect you and you will end up under a pecerp (minibus) or taxi.

Outside Mexico City, it's quite different but there are not a lot of jobs, Mexico City is getting bigger and bigger because all the companies, all the federal government offices are there, it's not a viable city, we have to bring water from far places, produce electricity from other states that don't have electricity for their own people.

If you are in the tech industry don't expect to find a really good job outside the three major cities, maybe you are lucky and will find something good but those are not easy to get or find.

Nightlife is great if you like it, and if you know a lot of people, so you can go into the nice clubs without waiting 1 hour to see if they let you in.

Great things about Mexico City, people, museums, culture, events, concerts, you can find something to do at any time any day, but you have to make good money, and then you won't like to go out because going to your friend's takes 1 hour at least.

Mexico City, is a great place, but quality of life is going down faster than the water in a toilet. If the government does something to slow down things, moving big federal offices to other cities, like Pemex or the Marines, Hacienda, kick out Lopez Obrador so he can block the streets somewhere else, Mexico City will be a great place.
