You shouldn't cough up your freedoms to prevent crime. By the way, this isn't for when you get screwed over,do you honestly think you can file a complaint at your local police department and their going to fax ebay, hell no, their going to say, we can't do anything for you, or, do you have insurance. Like when my car stereo got stolen as well as 40 other car stereos, in one night, in my little town. And the law enforcement said, were not likely to catch these guys, they didn't dust for prints, they didn't look for clues, they just said, call your insurance company.
Cops are fucking worthless in theft cases unless it's a felony theft, even then though, they are pretty useless. I found my car stereo at a pawn shop, they had the guys name and address after that, guess what happened, he got probabation for 3 months, he wasn't forced to pay me back for damage to my car or anything like that, he just got probation. What good did that do for me? The court said I could take him to civil court if I wanted to get my own lawyer and what not.
You didn't mean communism, you meant facism. Communism is an economic idealogy not a social ideaology. But none the less I agree, doing this is like removing congress and the senate and saying hey, it's a lot faster if we just have a president. hmmm...sounds scary. ANd besides if they have good cause to believe your stealing or selling stolen goods they can get a warrant very easily.
By this guys argument I should take the makers of Fast and the Furious to court for making thousands of idiot around the U.S. believe that you really can take a Honda Civic and have it turning flat 9s quarter miles with nitrous and a laptop.
I'll give you my home address, and I garantee you have no hope of getting my credit card number, bank account information. or anything else. I memorize my pins, my security question is, what is my pin, and besides on all credit card change of information they ask for my credit card number, how are you going to get that. Super hacker.
Your correct of course, but I was looking for an example of things that we as normal people would never get to see or do, because of government coverups, that don't really hurt anyone. I guess a better example would be selling your own video tape of an assasination or something. You taped it, but if you tried to see it, see you next week at Fort Benning's NSA headquarters
You can get my bid history and my email, but you can't get my credit card number, my home address and phone number, and now they require you to put in a bank account to be a seller. I don't want all that handed to the "Homeland Security Agency". What if I like the Iron Cross, or the swastica, will they suddenly start investigating all my banking and credit card numbers, criminals should be caught I agree, but that is what warrants are for, when they hand over this info for something as simple as a fax that compromises my rights I feel.
This will not affect rip off artists, the FBI doesn't go after guys for selling you something you don't like, they'll use it to go after the people selling us something truly unique, like a piece of the berlin wall, or a piece of the space shuttle. If the govt. drops a space ship in my back yard, I want to be able to sell the damn broken thing, it's of no use to them, but instead now there will be 4 fbi agents at my house.
Where do we draw the line in the sand, This is slashdot and many people here are from the US, but we also have a lot of people from other countries. How do they view this. In Holland, at 15 your an adult and can be in porn if you like. Is this a problem? Where did we pick the magical age of 18 and do we have the right to impose it on everyone? I personally enjoy the look of a mature woman, which is why my wife is 4 years older than I am and I find her sexy every day I wake up. But what if I was 17, and I took pictures of my 17 year old girlfriend, do I go to jail?
you can't expect a 17 or 16 year old boy or girl to want to look at people much older than themselves. hmmm... and then there is this issue of men of my age looking at young girls. This really pisses me off, but I have a daughter, so maybe my view is biased. See that is the problem in this country. Were always so gung ho about picking a random moral standard and forcing everyone to follow it. We get pissed off over child porn, but then I see, we don't seem to respect our own principles in our own homes. I often drive my daughter and her friends to drop them off at the movies, or the mall, and I see these parents who let their 13 year old daughters leave the house in outfits that would make me blush to have seen my wife wearing in college. mid drift shirts and belly button rings, thong underwear very vissible.
This pisses me off, but you don't see me running out to make a law against mid drift shirts, or belly button piercings, although I feel this causes more rapes to happen than any child porn we can imagine.
I guess my point is, that life is subjective, and we must be careful what laws we start throwing around willy nilly, a friend of mine in college became a nudist when she got married, she has kids and a husband and has been happily married for 15 years, should I look down on her, because it is not the lifestyle I chose. Let me reitterate, men who take erotic pictures of children should die a horrible death, but I just don't want our laws suddenly starting to infringe on the rights of the innocent, and I fear vague rulings such as these could result in that.
That was a silly statement, what he is saying is that it is no different than going into a bar and dropping your business card into the fishbowl to try and win a free lunch. And besides they don't get a whole lot of information from you. Maybe an IP, whatever fake name you put into your profile (Good idea using a fake name) what browser your using, some other data, I do the same thing on my site with CGI script, not for any terrible reason, I just want to insure my site looks ok on all the browsers people use.
well, no point in being a troll, so please don't go balistic here. But I am actually sure that they want you to go to service pack 1 because of stabilizing p2p. Maybe the requirement of XP is marketing, I don't know, but i don't see how them requesting you download, a free update is marketing?
Oh and I use Linux, and some programs in the past have required a kernel update. Which is good, if everything can run on the old shitty kernels your not driving forward with new development, just like I don't expect everything new to run on my old solaris box. I think pushing people to upgrade can be good for the computer industry as well as for us computer users who then get to benefit from huge price drops on slightly old processors and hardware.
Sounds like a hardware problem to me. I am running XP on an Athlon 1.2 Ghz machine, Geforce 4 MX460 with svideo in/out composite in/out and dvi and RGB out, as well as soundblaster live card, and the only problem I have had with XP was when I had a stick of SDRAM 133 go bad and it corupted the registry, but I took out the bad stick and ran winnt32/unattended and it reinstalled windows with all of my previous settings and programs still in place. It was quite nice, I was surprised. I was dead set against going XP originally, but I wanted to play a couple of games that ummm...well didn't run in my redhat 7.2 so I slapped it on my computer and am pretty happy.
So by your argument I should be allowed to just make my own sattelite modem and download information off the internet through it, as long as all my uploads go through my regular modem. Then i am only recieving a signal broadcasted on my land.
Your an Idiot, Please stop talking. Your wrong. Accept it and move on.
See you guys offended my web guy dan, he through up that site a week ago, he doesn't ussually post here, so I let him use my name, because as I told him, anonymous cowards are ussually men with small penises and fat asses.
If you guys are going to make fun of this guy, could you not make idiots of yourself in the process, I just looked at the source on his page and it certainly wasn't done in FrontPage. If you were a webdeveloper like me you'd know that, but your probably a 30 year old single fat ass sitting at home unemployed, eating cheatos, or working for some shit company as their IT guy.
But it isn't unauthorized signals on your land. You purchased land from a government who controls the laws that are enforced on said land. This government, be it the United States, then licensed a company to send that signal. It is authorized, and it is illegal to steal it, and if DTV falls what good would that do those of us who can't get cable you idiotic bastard. Do you expect a company to put a multi million dollar sattelite in space, pay millions to send content out through it, and have no one pay for it?
You dolt. Things have to be paid for or you won't have them, if everyone stole like these idiots, companies wouldn't be able to afford to even have this technology.
I notice you didn't acknowledge my cell phone point. I guess that's because you couldn't refute it. And no by actuality the owner doesn't have to know the object is gone for it to be stealing. It's your job to turn that wallet into the proper athorities if you know it isn't yours. And then after a certain amount of time it becomes yours, but only after turning it in.
Ping pong balls are physical objects. If you talk on a cell phone on one side of my house and the antenna for that cell phone is on the other side of my house. I have no right to start using that frequency for listening to your conversation, because it is a licensed frequency and a company paid to license it. If you have a problem with this aspect of the law, you'll need to talk to the FCC not DTV. The same argument can be put to Wireless Broadband starting up in many of the states, if you find a way to hack into their connection and start using free wireless bandwidth, that is breaking the law, they are paying to transmit that signal and you have no right to it according to the FCC. So bitch somewhere else if your going to do it like an idiot.
They are stealing,
stealing
stealing.
and you want to make it ok, so you can too.
That's not how transmission law works. especially if you live in the UK or US. That signal being transmitted is on a licensed band, and therefor has the legal right to cross into your property without you tampering with it. Just like cellular transmissions and police bands. If you were to start coding your own cell phone and using different frequencies in your house, you would be just as liable and would go to jail. If you have a problem, bitch to your government control agency for licensing a band that goes through your house, or if your in the states call the FCC and bitch.
Or just stop being stupid. If I drop my wallet in your yard. It's still mine, and if you take it, it's still stealing.
The author has said nothing like that. Maybe they don't sell it their because they don't want to have to service that area. It still gives you no right to steal it. i hope you go to jail for a long long time for stealing.
People like you give the rest of us computer people a bad name.
>Oh, I never said it wasn't. I just don't feel >bad about it.
Which is why I am fine with them putting you in jail for it. I pay for mine and if your sucky country that isn't the U.S. doesn't have direct TV than put up your own damn sattelite.
The way I see it they are selling information that only has illegal application. In which case I think they should be held accountable for any crime created with their information. Such as if I gave someone exact information on how to kill a specific person. If that person suddenly gets killed I am going to have a rough time pleading I only was supplying information.
Don't download data on how to steal shit, and you won't get in trouble. How hard is that. Don't break laws and you don't go to jail.
You shouldn't cough up your freedoms to prevent crime. No but my brother did take the "short bus" and I would apreciate you lay off. If I was retarded, would that make my opinion less valid than yours?
You can get my bid history and my email, but you can't get my credit card number, my home address and phone number, and now they require you to put in a bank account to be a seller.
