You realize that Apple calls all their warrranties "AppleCare," right? So you get 1 year of "AppleCare" warranty with the purchase, and you can optionally buy 2 more years of extended warranty "AppleCare."

Trust me, I would LOVE to use Subversion to do site maintenence/updates, etc.

However, I work at an academic institution, who recently paid a company to rebuild their site. That company uses Dreamweaver for their development and maintenance etc. On top of that, we have about 2 or 3 dozen faculty/administrative staff who use Contribute3 to make content edits to their own departmental sections of the site. Unfortunately, there is no "easy" way for an install base of that {size/level of computer savvy} to {switch to/use} something more hardcore like SVN.

Oh, and maintaining the cascading nature of Dreamweaver's "template" style of navigation inheritance would be a bitch. Dreamweaver can barely do it itself.

Maybe I'll start my own "web design" company and sell people end-to-end SVN solutions for web maintenance, and give them like Tortoise SVN or something. Who's with me?

Well, the guy of Watson fame (or is it scandal?) seems to be working on something promising. It's called Sandvox and it should be full of Cocoa-y goodness. I've been meaning to get in contact with him and see if it would be possible for it to include "Site management" features that are compatable with Dreamweaver, ie. check-outs/check-ins, resource lists, etc.

Then I could use that to manage sites. Honestly, who let Macromedia near a compiler? (Or interface design tool?)

It won't spell the end of Dreamweaver, GoLive or Flash. I'm getting sick of wading through MM_SwapImage() crap in sites I didn't build but have to maintain.

While I was watching the Demo video, I was hoping there would be some button to make it switch from traditional "tabs" to the drawer-based awesomeness they were showing. That would be a sweet feature, I think, then if I only have a few tabs open, I can use the regular ones, but then once I get a bunch open, I could switch them over. Just a thought, maybe Tim will read this.

Just read the review and was highly amused... Back in the day the guy was my Pediatrician, and on one of my last few visits, he told me about it, and I got an autographed copy for my 18th birthday. (You know, when you stop seeing a pediatrician.) Anyway, reading the book was very weird, because the writing style and points of view expressed in the book are quite different than things he would normally say. I was, however, intrigued by many of the concepts he discussed. I've actually tried to make references to the book in real life (specifically the Climax Design phenomenon) but I'm usually met with blank looks and confusion. I wish more people would read this, even though it's hard to get ahold of!

Well, the way the arrangement goes, (went, rather) was that Apple would bundle IE with all computers it shipped, until something like 2002, and M$ would continue making the Office Suite for Macintosh. Apple is no longer under this contractual obligation, (since the time has expired,) and from what I can tell, is one of the reasons they are making Safari, to replace it. I'm not sure what this means for Office X in the future, but I haven't heard one way or the other.

  12. Re:Ok, reality check... on Clarke's Rendezvous with Rama going Hollywood? · · Score: 2, Interesting

First of all, I, too thought the trilogy was good. But, as with most trilogies, it got worse as it went on. And, as with _2001: The Movie_, it paled in comparison to the book, especially when Kubrik and Clark started to disagree towards the end.

Now, back when I read a lot of Clarke, one of his essays was about the inception of 2001. It was designed as an elaboration on one of his earlier short stories "The Sentinel" (about the black Monolith) I forget which short story collection it was in, it wasn't "Tales from the White Hart" but the another one. Anyway, when Kubrick and Clarke sat down to write 2001, (yes, they both co-authored both works, according to Clarke) they decided that Clarke would take full billing on the book and Kubrick would take full billing on the movie, so it's not like they got in some big argument about the end. Then Clarke decided that since the movie was more well known than the book (go figure) that 2010 would be a sequel to the movie instead of the book.

  13. Awesome... but the power company? on Power Companies Offering Cable (TV, Net) Service · · Score: 4, Interesting

This sounds incredibly cool, especially since I'm the one who pays both the Cable and the Electric bills at my college rental, however, at least in our area (University of Michigan) our power is from a huge Detroit conglomerate, DTE Energy, and even getting our electricity taken care when we moved in was more than they could handle. The previous tennants had defaulted 2+ months in a row, and the power company handed us a bill for $414, while a technician went to turn off the juice. Frankly, I would love to pay less for our internet, but I don't trust the power company further than I can spit.

Agreed. I think we need to replace the shuttle system. It's 30 year old technology. Actually, IIRC, the space shuttle was deployed in 1981, one year too late to save the infamous SkyLab from crashing into Australia. thus making it 21 year old technology.
