One simple solution to this problem is to use Google spellchecker to good use. I always type URLs in my google box and let google lead me to the page, even if I know the URL. Probably just because I believe Google more than I do my own typing skills..
The author makes his point using examples as OOo and Firefox.
As far as Firefox is concerned, I fully agree with the author that porting it to Windows hurts the spread of Linux, thats because Firefox is a way superior browser than Internet Explorer.
But then OOo is still way inferior to MS Office (this is not flamebait but a fact that is well acknowledged by all). So porting OOo to Windows does not hurt Linux at all. In fact it helps the cause of Linux as it helps the users to get acquainted with the features of OOo and get used to the new document formats before making the switch to Linux.
Conclusion of my post being: porting Firefox to Windows hurts Linux but porting OOo will only help Linux.
Its the simple case of Meritocracy dude! The one who contributes the most does have the most say and does end up pulling the strings. Whats wrong with that?
Sun is pulling the strings on OpenOffice.
And its 16 programmers only recently, since a few months back. Until then it was just some 3-4 developers, someone correct me if I'm wrong.
When is Mono going to have an IDE like VS.NET?

Mono Beta 2 Released

Ive seen MonoDevelop and SharpDevelop and am not impressed with either.
The day Novell is able to churn out an IDE like VS.NET for MONO is when Mono will be really able to make waves.
How come he didnt answer as to why Windows is his suggestion over Linux for home users? (Ref: http://slashdot.org/articles/03/11/04/2312225.shtm l)
I thought that was the question on everyone's mouth, its strange how none of the posts asking this question was modded at +5!
Or did he want to leave this question unanswered, neither affirming nor denying it.
I have been using Linux on my desktop for the past few months, & I did a similar compatibility study of my own, and I really feel, be it Open Office, Star Office, or AbiWord, they all lack badly in compatibility, much more than this study would like me & u to believe.
Apart from compatibility, another majoy issue is stability. OOo and Star Office used to crash atleast once a day which is a sad state of affairs.
After all these experiences with the above products, I switched to using MS Office XP on Wine and except for speed, in all other aspects I feel this option scores over all others.
What does the/. community feel about the use of Office over WINE as a long-term solution?
an asteroid with a 1:909,000 probability of hitting the earth! So whats the big deal?
Doesnt this actually mean 908,999 : 909,000 (~1) probability of the asteroid NOT hitting the earth.
There are so many other Clear & Present Dangers, with a much higher probability, not least of which is the threat of Biological/Nuclear weapons.
That should cause more perturbation among the masses than a lonely asteroid hitting the earth!
... that this spy cam will only be used for monitoring speed limit, & not for some nefarious motive?
The opportunities are endless, if such a public spy-cam system is compromised.
In the age of blades and nano-computing, I found this rather funny. I mean what kind of a production environment will like to have such massive computer cases clogging up all their physical space. Personally I'd much rather make do with a blade even if it did produce a lot of heat.
In terms of feasibility I give this thing a 1 on a scale of 10. It has more antique value than anything else!
This is old news. SubVirt by Peter Chen's group at UMich is the original system which proposed this idea. FYI.

IMHO this is a dangerous thing to do, as once the virii-writers get hook of how the auto-update feature works it will become a big vulnerability.
