So how long until they buy, erm.. "loby" a law saying the posession of a patch cord or a sound card with a "line in" is illegal? Becuase after all, normal people only have sound coming *out*, you only need sound in if you're a terrorist.
Oh damn it, not this tripe again.
The largest problem with this idea, amongst a great great many others, is the subjectivity of the issue. If you can get a half dozen randomly selected people, representing a decent demographic cross section, to agree on where to draw the line, I'll give you 5 bucks.
Does intercourse shots constitue pr0nography? How about just nude shots? Just shots of a topless woman? what if it's on a site discussing self exams for breast cancer? but hey, it's still a nipple right? Sites w/ pics about STDs? sure as heck cant have a penis on the public net. What about a site on the teletubbies, after all, they promote homosexuallity.
None of this even comes close to addressing the unenforcablity of such a law....
On the other hand, it just occured to me that probable Trolls like this parent probably should be illegal.
we're talking about going to 88% liberty...
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the Colorado river took more than a day to carve the Grand Canyon. Errosion is a slow, but steady proccess. 2% today, 1% tommorrow, hey, another 2% Friday will gain us another 3% saftey.
What you have to keep in mind is that one variable is not strictly dependant of the other. What should be done, to use your quantifications, is set the slider for freedom at 98% (only 98%? there has to be some restrictions, "no stealing my car, no killing people," etc. I'm not promoting anarchy) and do what ever it takes to maxamize safty without losing liberty "points".
when's the last time you went to the records building to pull the blueprints for the local power plant? About three weeks ago. They weren't amused. But seriously, did the 14 on those planes have blueprints for the WTC? Did McVeigh have the plans for the Murrah federal building? Of course not, no need for them. It's the concept of "we have to (ban | eliminate access to) that (item | information) because it could be used for badness. Well, yes it could, but so could a (chain | car | box cutter).
We're not talking about abolishing the Constitution and establishing a totalitarian dictatorship
You might want to check w/ Ashcroft on that, I get the feeling he wouldn't mind too much.
Personally, I disagree. The Constitution and Bill of Rights are such fundamental underpinings of our (our? cue bitching about us-centric views here) country and society, that to surrender them in the name of security would be a sort of sociatal suicide. If keeping them did mean death, literally or figuratively, I'd rather die standing... Patrick Henry's line springs to mind.
except that the "inverse sqaure of the distance" assumes a point source, wich radiates in all directions equally, emitting a "sphere of evil tracking rays". While this does describe the RFID unit itself, the initial emmiter/attena could be directional, boosting thier effective range. Now, 15m is still pushing it bigtime, but you could problaby get 8-10 out of the bugger if you really tired.
but I really can't see the use of a laser mounted in a 747. IMHO, it's way too slow compared to the missiles
The whole point of having it mounted in a 747 is altitude. From a few miles up they can take down the missiles while they're still hundreds of miles away on accent, long before they come over the horizon for any "laser turret" to be able to shoot. This way you're not raining flaming debris and whatever nasty warhead shards down on your own toops, but rather on theirs. As far as speed, yes, have them up there 24/8
Keep up to date on current worms, Notify your customers about these threats
So according to your plan, sience the slammer bit took all of what, 10 minutes to reach 85% saturation, the ISP would not have had time to warn their customers, and would thus be responsible for footing the bill. Right?
VX vs. Plutonium.
Yeah, VX wins, but it doesn't hang around for 26,000 years.
now if you excuse me, I just did a google search for "plutonium" so I have to go wait for a knock on my door. I'll send you all a postcard from cuba.
I really don't see how they're going to manage this without having to monitor everything I view on the net. Unless they plan on demanding everyone who sells anything on the net from anywhere in the world has to report all sales to them, and that'll work just peachy, right?
(audio patch cord and decent soundcard anyone?)

And then of course, when work is ready to upgrade again, you can swipe the old stuff and, voila, you have another overclock project!
WOOOOOHOOO! Time to bust out my H2! 9mpg *this* Baby!!
really, any good manager with a good sense of perspective...
wohaaa... those exist? i thought they were just a myth.

"An RFID tag communicates its location to Benetton's computerized supply chain network"
erm... and how the hell does IT know where it is?

I for one said yes to 28.
