This isn't completely surprising, nor honestly a big deal. I recall at the beginning of last season, after doing the movie, that they were discussing ending the show anyways - they had enjoyed doing movies too much, and mentioned wrapping the show up in another season or two... I was sort of expecting the series to end in this season anyway (Although now it doesn't look like they'll go to do more movies ).
Wasn't Bill quoted in an interview with a german magazine last year to have stated (and i'm paraphrasing from memory here) that "Bug fixes are not a significant reason for a new version of a piece of software. The only reason to release new software is to introduce new features"... Considering Microsoft's track record, I suppose this explains a lot...
Well, it's really a matter of perspective. Perl kicks some SERIOUS ass for the things I use it for - system maintainence scripts (I was writing things in BASH for a few months until I tried Perl), CGI [i have yet to find a better suited language for this],and various other sundry tasks that I won't list.
To each his own. For what it does Perl is a kickass language.
But then again, BASIC kicked ass in it's day too.
Doesn't mean it's any good NOW =)
I know alot of COBOL programmers - the College i started out at had a CS program specifically geared towards "legacy application suppport". They trained the students in dated langauges like FORTRAN and COBOL - most of them left the school for $60k+ per annum jobs with companies like State Farm Insurance, supporting their ancient COBOL programs. So COBOL is still a very active language but I really haven't seen any "apps from scratch" applications of it other than in academia.
Just my $35. Thoughts? comments? flames (ok i can do without the flames) ? -brendan
Read some info in the past day or so and If I read correctly, it was a stolen AOL Account that he posted it from...so releasing account details wouldn't have been it.
As for Microsoft not having to follow rules of other people - they did it at the behest of Law Enforcement officials. Now this may get by at court but we all know that its complete bullshit...
Snipped from the news.com article about the MS/Alpha Split:
The first servers with eight Intel Pentium III processors start shipping to customers next month, and their performance equal or exceed midrange Alpha servers.
Which is awfully funny... It takes 8 x86 processors to get close to a single, _MID-RANGE_ alpha... however I suppose it fits into Microsoft's shady history to push us towards lower quality for more money... go fig.
If I recall correctly, It was much lauded about the time that they caught him that Microsoft had released access to its much publicized database of "Registered Microsoft Users Product IDs" to track the embedded ID in the Melissa virus, which was ultimately how they located Mr. Smith.
I would like to know how the Prosecution intends to get around this one...
Maybe you don't. But if you did it would be because in 5 to 10 years, Linux will most likely have helped revolutionize alot of the computer industry. And as Open Source and Open Source Advocacy become a larger phenomenom - Linux, which had no small part in kickstarting it all, will be noticed for it's contribution to this. I suppose putting Linus' first notes in the Smithsonian would be some sort of tribute to the movement, and what it did for Computers and Society.
Hmmmmmm.........where'd all my bandwidth go? Oh, yah. www.bawls.com is on my network. I've been slashdotted ! =)
But on an on topic thread, Bawls is fairly interestsing stuff. Being new to this area (Miami Florida, where I work and where Bawls is from) I tried Bawls recently. LOTS of caffeine. I don't think i slept that night (seeing as i had it at 11pm). The taste was interesting- hard to place...
But you should all go out and buy some bawls - its the perfect "I have to code for 3 weeks straight and have no time for sleep" drink.
And yes, for those of you who wondered. The woman on the page IS naked.
